DS 3 Crossback E-Tense - Luxury compact SUV? | Fully Charged

Jonny was invited over to the congestion capital of the world (Paris), by DS to view their latest electric version of the DS3 Crossback.
Whilst DS is the luxury side of Citroen, in the PSA group, Jonny can't help but compare it to the rest of the available EV's out there.
Will its 'luxury' and unique design elements help this car stand out in a world of higher range, same sector cars?

Loved this video, and I’ve watched every Fullycharged Episode going and have been an early supporter of the channel. Thank you Jonny, that was an excelled, balanced preview of the car and its pluses and minuses, something I’d been aware of and felt us EV evangelists have been guilty of over recent years is just shouting about how great EVs are whenever one was released.But that battle is now won, EVs are undoubtedly the future, and with the increase of them on the market its more and more important to be critical of them as well as praise them. Personally I think PSA has styling totally on point of late, and I’m loving what they’re putting out from an aesthetic perspective, but feel they get the tech wrong, frequently the wrong engines in their cars etc. Think this is a good solid step forward for PSA, but until they get a good skateboard design I can’t see me recommending one to people with that compromised space in the back and boot.

When he popped what is commonly referred to as a 'frunk' I was saddened to see the lack of space. I understand why they're doing it this way, as Jonny says it's to enable them to scale production and keep it all on the same line. It's like they're just dipping their toe in and not fully committing. I just hope that enough people buy PSA BEV anyway so they'll fully commit for the next production marques.

It’s a shame that the question about renewable/recycled materials was dodged, I think it shows a lack of understanding from the established players in the combustion engine market. New brands coming through, operating on skate board platforms - offering more storage, more versatility - and using recycled/cruelty free materials is where we need to be heading. Great review!

You are absolutely right, although I'd argue that the battery recycling/reusability should be the top priority at first!
@guseks8413
@guseks8413 4 года назад
The reason they don't use skateboard platforms is because they want to make them on the same production line as the ICE/hybrid versions. The reason for that is simple, the market is not there yet when it comes to pure EVs and it wont be for a few years atleast. What you are saying about the recycled materials I agree with though new production of plastic materials needs to end soon, cruelty free materials I don't really know what it is but I guess leather and as long as people eat meat we might aswell use the skin, it would be a waste otherwise.

I don't mind cars, have one myself. But please stop this notion that evs are good for the environment. Yes they are better than ices, but guess what? driving a 2-3 tonne isn't gonna save you from congestion nor the fact that you are hauling ~25x dead weight for any transportation. Should there be cruelty free option? Yes. But the incumbent ev manufacturer aren't the holy grail you thinking they are.

That touch screen responsiveness, I agree, is more important than a lot of auto manufacturers understand (ICE or EV). If it is slow to respond - especially in a top luxury car - it will be perceived as cheap quality. It needs to respond IMMEDIATELY to your touch, especially if you are accessing the screen while you're driving.

I wonder when companies will start getting creative again. Truly creative, as in designing the exterior around the benefits of the interior, making a car more functional with all the space electric components no longer need. Minivans would be amazing electrically - flat floor and no bonnet are easy. You could have so much interior space. Instead we keep getting more and more stupid little crossovers with little interior space and a massive body on the outside.

I absolutely love the DS3 E-tense, I think it's the most beautiful EV out there - but it's priced too high, and have too limited range. I hope the boom of EVs in 2020 will 'force' DS to adjust their prices - or the range - but untill then I'm already beginning to look forward to a DS4 E-tense or a fully electric DS7.

It does look good. If you don't regularly make very long trips the range is fine. I find the trend toward huge batteries to be wasteful. Big batteries are expensive and heavy. They are of little use for most people's daily use and cost extra energy to lug around town. This appears to be a fine car for an urban lifestyle, much nicer to look at than a Kia.

The problem is that people will end up keeping an ICE car for their occasional longer journeys. That's much more of a problem than driving around with battery capacity that you will only need every few weeks. We are moving away from an EV as a second car just for city and shopping. They need to (and they can) do everything.

Acceleration or sharpness isn't what Citroën is about. It's about comfort. Actually, even more than comfort it's about ease of driving. It's little details like a "dark" button on the center console that turns off all lights except the speedometer. Very nice while driving in the dark. It's about things you're doing semi-automatically while driving in other cars that get taken care of, or pushed to the background. It's about being able to drive for 10 hours without getting tired. You really need to drive one to understand it. And sure, even then it's possible this brand isn't for you, that's fine. We're all different and that gives the world color.

Whatever this excellent review concludes.....it's great to see Citröen doing what they do best again, they really did lose their way for quite a few years. Cars that are quirky, slightly 'mad' whilst being brilliant in many ways, flawed - but forgiven - and above all, different. If you truly get what real Citroens were about and this car evokes memories of some truly inspired cars for a buyer they'll pay for this regardless of price. No one is forcing anyone to part with their cash. If you're someone who likes to show that they themselves as different to the herd for example..... Great to see something visually individual, even if they aren't calling it what it is. A Citroën.

An excellent, balanced review as usual. My over-riding opinion of the car which I can’t get past, is that this just doesn’t look like a luxury brand. And if someone is in the market to spend money on a luxury brand, that’s probably a prerogative for them. Most people, I’m guessing, who spend money on luxury brands want to be seen spending money on luxury brands.

I think they're trying to copy the VAG model. DS = luxury (kinda Audi?), Peugeot = Sporty (SEAT), I think they'll position Opel/Vauxhall as a more staid middle ground like VW, Citroen for a bit more quirk and now they have FCA, FIAT will become the Skoda. Who knows if it will work though... historically all those brands have occupied similar space and are all much of a muchness. Will be interesting to see if they can separate them out into some kind of distinct pecking order like VAG have achieved. This car is absolutely gopping though. And far too expensive.

The French have a different way of looking at luxury, than - say - the Germans. For them it's quirky styling with bits and bobs all over the place, unusual textures and materials. Yet there are manually adjusted seats, no powered tailgate, not even a hydraulic bonnet. Why would you cut corners like that in a luxury brand?

Almost twice the price of the top of the range MG ZS ev, but with possibly better build quality and looks, and a rust warranty that covers the whole car, unlike its cheaper competitor.

I have done 12,000 miles now since March in my DS3 and in Eco mode and cruise set to 70mph I get 120 miles before desperately searching for a charger that works in the last 5 miles or range. At 60mph I can get 160 miles, and thats in summer. In the rain at night and in winter the range will drop to 130 miles at 70mph. Not even 2 hours driving before I need to stop for an hour to charge due to the lack of 100kw chargers. I am on motability so am giving mine back and going back to a diesel 2008 until the PSA group step up to the mark.

Material wise, I was actually happy about the recycled basic black plastic interior panels in our Leaf. Kid proof, liquid and dirt proof, can take a beating and the recycled content was a step in the right direction. Still waiting for an AWD wagon/crossover Subaru replacement EV.

Just here to say I'm sick of "luxury SUV's" electric or not. I never have been that interested but now they're so prolific I just don't even want to look at another one to be honest. I'm out.

You never had to buy them in the first place lmao. Some say Heath Ledger was the best Joker. Some say it's Joaquin Phoenix. But deep down we all know that you're the real clown for being offended by other people's car buying decisions.

@@carlosandleon 😂 Very clever Carlos. I bet you've been itching to use that analogy haven't you. After all, it sounded so cool when you read it. 😉 However, as a rebuttal of the premise of your pithy retort, I have never owned an SUV nor am I in any way "offended" as you are suggesting. My original comment is what is known as an "opinion" and, despite you inferring otherwise, It is not directed at "other peoples buying decisions" but rather the general design of a range of inanimate objects. 🤔 Hardly cause for a snide personal attack you would think. 🤷‍♂️ But then, such incidents tend to say more about the character of the instigator than their target. 😉👍

@@STUCASHX that's quite a paragraph you got there. I don't even remember what I wrote but I am positively entertained. Edit: Oh it was this comment lmao

I see your point. But for people like me who have original DS3 14' e-hdi this car is great. I know that range is not so great etc, but man how it's looks! It's a big LOOOKER car. Inside is beautiful, as quality I hope. For me it's great car to go aroud town, park for free and have nice, silent place to stay in traffic jam in Cracow. My diesel have big range but I need it only when I go on vacations trips aroud Europe and only reason for that I bought diesel 4 years ago. Now it's not my must-have, I preffer to have silent and comfortable car with great desing. PS. nice shoes ;)
