DS 3 Crossback review - www.drivingele...
Watch our latest video - / @drivingelectric
DS is working to establish itself alongside more familiar upmarket brands, and like its sister companies Citroen and Peugeot, is going big on electrification. Its latest DS 3 small crossover SUV is available with petrol, diesel or pure-electric power, and here we're testing the latter E-TENSE version.

Looking at this car in 2021. The 3pin wall plug is an extra £200. The safety package, i.e. automatic breaking when using cruise control, blindspot detection etc, is an extra £850. I was comparing this with the Kona. I think I am going with the Kona even though this looks more pleasing on the inside.

I checked today and you could pick a secondhand one up (in France) for as little as €17000. That's a huge discount and a good deal if buying one second hand

The design really gets me but what tipped it was how can only the top of the range offer a reverse camera when most cars provide that as standard and top of the range provide 360 cameras? Is this bizarre just to me? 😂
@flaxvert
@flaxvert 4 года назад
I agree. I have the £36,000 version that doesn't have a reversing camera, nor proximity unlock ?? The DS brand will be going flat quicker than their short range batteries!

NO way your getting 200 miles on full battery. I had the 208 electric on weekend test drive winter I was getting 134 miles.
@flaxvert
@flaxvert 4 года назад
@Richard Ingram I have done 12,000 miles now since March in my DS3 and in Eco mode and cruise set to 70mph I get 120 miles before desperately searching for a charger that works in the last 5 miles or range. At 60mph I can get 160 miles, and thats in summer. In the rain at night and in winter the range will drop to 130 miles at 70mph. Not even 2 hours driving before I need to stop for an hour to charge due to the lack of 100kw chargers. I am on motability so am giving mine back and going back to a diesel 2008 until the PSA group step up to the mark.

@@flaxvert there’s apps out there to help find a charger. These days it’s all about planning...and will be the same as soon as more EV are sold
@flaxvert
@flaxvert 3 года назад
@@Pgcito I had the Zap-Map app but no amount of planning helps when chargers are behind locked gates due to lockdown. Other ones are faulty but have not been reported so don't show as having an issue and a phone call doesn't often fix them. Also well before getting close to the maximum range I have to start visiting chargers. Oh, then there's the issue of waiting ages for a charger to become available 😣

Good review, I am starting to almost like this car a bit now, but I much prefer the e208. Weirdly I haven't seen any on the road yet, and I live in Norway where electric cars outsell ICE cars, it might not be going down that well!
@flaxvert
@flaxvert 4 года назад
In England you will only see one on the roads, mine! There will be another driver join the DS3 Etense owners club in a few days though.. The car is too expensive and the range is too low but in 2 and a half years i give it back and get something better.

@@jacejohnson7113 After 10 months and 15k miles I gave the car back. The range I was getting was around 125 miles in winter at 70mph, that is no good for me. Plus well before getting close to the 125 mile mark I was having to plan a route to a charger, and as around half of the many chargers I tried weren't working I had to realistically start looking when I reached 105 miles. Then as rapid chargers only charge fast until around 90% I was left driving away with around 100 miles of range. The £36 grand car was up for sale less than one year later in a garage for £24k :O It lost 12k in a year! And the garage would have bought it from motability at a lower price than that too! I now have a new Peugeot 2008 Diesel, it works out cheaper id diesel than the DS3 did using electric per mile (when charging away from home). EV's still have a long way to go as does the charging infrastructure. If you do random journeys to different places then you will be annoyed to say the least! Then there was the 8k service?? My Pug has its first service at 20k! Hope that gives you an idea of what to expect, if you do low miles then you should be ok, especially if you can charge at home.
@flaxvert
@flaxvert 3 года назад
@@jacejohnson7113 I paid £1999 up front and you lose a portion of that each month. £2k over 36 months = £55 so the car lost £550 over the 10 months i had it, i was refunded £1450 of my initial £2k advanced payment. I did get £150 good condition bonus though which was nice but did have to pay a £50 admin fee to cancel the contract early :-)

I for one like the interior, better than boring crap that most makers go for, hardly any are unique at all, though I see what people are saying...this car and how it looks its like a mini...you either like them or you don`t, the mini for example goes for circles all over design wise inside...for me I hate it..sorry but a rectangle satnav screen looks dumb place inside a circle frame

Now when Opel Mokka is shown you can see the shortcomings of DS clearly, Mokka is much more a luxury car than DS... with more functional and better equipment and Peugeot 2008 is also better in some points, they have saved costs on details to put the money on expensive materials... BUT... expensive materials are not enough to become a luxury car....

The problem with comparing with Hyundai and Kia is that the cheaply made Korean vehicles have nowhere near the longevity of their European counterparts
@unconventionalideas5683
@unconventionalideas5683 2 года назад
You seem to be a bit behind the times. There was a time when that was true. Today, however, longevity is generally regarded as much better than European Rivals, at least here in the United States.
@Steve_P_B

@@unconventionalideas5683 as someone who has recently owned vehicles such as Hyundai and Kia, I can confirm that the quality is much worse than the European cars
@unconventionalideas5683
@unconventionalideas5683 2 года назад
@@Steve_P_B Having known various people who have owned both and been reasonably careful about maintaining them, I can say my own experiences are different. To a certain extent, it is a luck of the draw thing. That said, my experience in the United States is among Americans, who for various reasons tend to drive a lot more distance per years than people from other parts of the world, often during very hot summers with exceptionally strong sun. Mechanical failings that might not show up in lower mileage cycles thus tend to show up more. Many German cars (which are, other than a few expensive Italian and British Models, virtually the only European Cars available in the US) have acquired reputations for becoming expensive and difficult to maintain as they age (BMW has among the worst reputation). Italian Models have a mixed reputation, although it seems that their reputation is not as abysmal as BMW. I am not sure about Jaguar Land Rover. But then, those cars generally have quite low sales and production figures.
@Steve_P_B
@Steve_P_B 2 года назад
@@unconventionalideas5683 I come from an Australian background where we aren't that different in how we use our cars and in similar conditions. I have had the cheap Korean cars and I have had more average priced cars like fords and the cheap cars generally have more breaking down and needing replacing than the more average priced cars
@unconventionalideas5683
@unconventionalideas5683 2 года назад
@@Steve_P_B What I will say is that my own experiences are different. European Cars tend to be much worse than even the Korean Cars, in the experiences of people I know, with only really one exception of a particularly well cared for German Car, which is not to say that the Korean Cars have been perfect. They have not necessarily been perfect. I do not know why this is the case, but generally European Cars have a poor reputation, backed up by poor experiences regarding longevity. BMW is the worst, it seems, but the other German Marques do not really do that well. I have not heard great things about Fiat, but I have little or no experience with them. Jaguar Land Rover seems to have a lot of problems, too, but I do not have firsthand accounts or a lot of data. Realistically, though, this lack of longevity has caused the German Manufacturers to struggle a bit in recent years, at least on the US market.
