(DS4 PC) Lower input lag for free! - Rocket Science

This video shows how to overclock the polling rate of a controller to reduce it's input lag on PC. It's mainly intended for the DS4 since it's a popular controller which gains a significant improvement from this change. You may try to use it with other controllers though.

Troubleshooting
People are having their controllers show up as red and not working after trying the overclock. It should be possible to do the reversing 3:38 to at least get the controller working again.
There may be a number of causes according to the support page of the program:
!!! Note - overclocking may not work for Low speed devices which controlled by non Microsoft USB stack, like USB 3.x at Windows 7 or newest Microsoft drivers.
!!! Note 2 - you shall disable Secure Boot or modify the registry to enable loading of Microsoft unsigned drivers to successfully load driver under Windows 10 x64 version 1607 (Anniversary Update) or newer versions.
In short:
1. You may be unlucky and have the wrong USB controller (you can try the ports in the back of your mobo if you didn't already (USB3)).
2. Google how to disable secure boot on your PC. This needs to be disabled but it can be considered a security vulnerability because secure boot will prevent third-party firmware (which could be malicious) from running on your PC.
If your controller doesn't seem to work anymore, first try reversing the OC (explained 3:38 in the video). If that doesn't fix it then close down the app. In the folder with the setup.exe there is a file called HIDUSBFU.inf (make sure you use the one with U for uninstall at the end). Right click on that file and click install. This should uninstall the service completely. Replug the controller to see if it works.
If it still doesn't work properly, open the device manager, under "Human Interface Devices", right click on "HID-compliant game controller" and "Uninstall device". If you have multiple, then you'll probably have to do it on all as I don't know how to figure out which is which. Then replug it again. It should now reinstall the driver for it. If you can't find any controllers you can try activating "Show hidden devices". This will display everything that is not connected at the moment too. So you can try removing all the game controllers not currently connected.

It's not such a massive security vulnerability really. There are methods to bypass the requirement of driver signature, it's a bit more complex to do (you have to work with the kernel memory directly), but it's doable nonetheless. Even if you disable driver signature, you should still see the prompt asking if you want to install the driver, this is actually the way it works on windows 7 and before, but then microsoft decided to charge everyone for driver signing. tldr: Don't be afraid to allow the loading of unsigned drivers, you are not any more or less secure. Just make sure not to run software from the sources you don't trust.

Wow! This is incredible. I was only able to use bluetooth up to now, and it was SUCH a pain connecting it. I tried this with a wire and it produces the same result, which means I can just easily plug in my controller with a micro usb whenever I want to play, so thank you so much for making this!

This really helped me out for being better at RL. I played 1630 MMR with 10ms delay and now I switched to 1ms and these matches feel so much smoother and faster overall now.

thank you for this. playing tony hawk 1&2 on PC, and want it to be a bit less laggy for the controls. doesnt feel as snappy as the original to me, and the button to pixel delay measurements for it have shown pretty ridiculous amounts of lag indeed. every bit helps when dealing with often bloated modern engines, which makes advice like this video very helpful. cheers

I've struggled with deadzone issues and my controllers feeling wonky for over a year now. I can relate to the problems SilentEchoUK describes (one of your patrons I believe) about conflicting deadzones, heavy car bug, etcetera. Although none of it seemingly can be replicated or proven, lowering the input lag on my DS4 controller seemed to have nullified that problem. It might just be placebo, but it actually feels like I can play RL properly again. Thanks for the video, and know that your work is greatly appreciated by the community.

Yea i have been aswell, i even have 2 PS4 controllers, reason being is the 1st one started having more delay then normal (after about a year in a half always keeping clean but have dropped on hard surfaces) the one i use now is having more delay then normal and i literally didnt have the issue like a week ago, i just ordered a PS5 controller, im thinking about testing this out before even jumping to the PS5 controller , since your comment is a year old, id like to ask how is it now? Nothing happened to the USB port? Nothing happen to the cord?nothing happen to the controller ? Or did you switch to PS5 controller possibly by now? If you also use xbox the first couple questions being answered would still help.

It worked for me. And the difference is MASSIVE. It's a whole different Game now. It's not faster generally, but your Controller just reacts so much quicker. It's like all of the Delay has randomly vanished. I can see this as an huge advantage over others that didn't do this. Nice Job!

I did this on my last controller and it felt so good afterwards, now I got a new controller and it felt so off for some reason. I remembered that I didn't overclock the polling rate so I did it again. My controller did not break on both occasions and even if its a placebo affect, IT IS a damm good one let me tell you. If you are thinking about doing this, just do it. BTW I checked my input delay on the DS4 Windows app and it went down from 4ms to 1ms so I don't know it might not be so placebo as everyone says it is. Great video btw super easy to follow and very simple and informative love it :D

nah, i dont think its placebo, just try playing a ring map or some advanced aerial custom training pack(like a redirect training pack), it felt so much different using a normal cable connection and a OC ds4(or bluetooth) that have less input lag, especially if you use directional air roll and tend to keep using air roll while in the air, the difference is HUGE

Open Registry Editor (Use Wiindows Search and type regedit to find it easily) 2. Navigate down the folder to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CI\Policy 3. Right click in the right pane where there's currently only a "default" value and some other. Select "New" and select the "DWORD (32-bit) Value. 4. Name it UpgradedSystem and press enter to confirm. Now double click this new item and change its value from 0 to 1. 5. That's all I did, expect I restarted my PC just after to make sure everything was good. Good luck.

Hey man, question... does scuf drivers and/or apps interfere with this? When I try the dongle method DS4 doesn’t read my controller via Bluetooth (I’ve tried everything to try to resolve this). And when I try the wired method is says in DS4 that I get a 3ms Response time which is the same as I was getting before so there’s basically no difference.. what is this? I have a vantage 2 btw. I have Elite Series 2 and after messing with it I would suggest you hook the controller up USB-C to USB-C, that seemed to give best results for me feel wise.

It seems that once you activate it for one Dualshock 4 controller, it is activated on ALL of your DS4-controllers. I have two of them and I set it up for one, and the rate seems to be 1000 for my other DS4 as well automatically.

Does doing this draw more power or voltage from psu because my psu completely died a day after trying this. I was already getting voltage limits on my pc because my 600w could barely handle my 3080gpu but underclocking helped to keep the voltage at a decent level. Idk if this is what pushed it over the edge or just a year of using my 3080 on it but I guess it’s worth asking.

Theoretically, would this work with an XboxOne controller to lower/underclock the polling rate? In theory, the game I play a lower polling rate is a higher advantage. PS4 controllers rule over all but I like the feel of the XboxOne controller. Could I simulate the PS4 polling rate onto my XboxOne controller for windows 10 PC?

@@Jimby I don't think so, because I don't speak english ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ In short, according to driver signing changes, Windows 10 1607+ will not load any new kernel-mode drivers which are not signed by the Dev Portal even if they have EV certificate. That means it's not your decision what you can run on your OS anymore, it's MS's decision now, 'cause it's not your OS, it's THEIR OS. Your overclocked DS4 won't work, driver is installed but can't be loaded. You can bypass this shit by 3 methods (second and third link): disable secure boot completely, use atsiv or, easiest IMO, create registry key to trick your OS, make it think it was updated from previous version, not fresh installed (may stop working anytime with any update).

Google how to disable secure boot on your PC, install service, then you should be able to turn secure boot back on.

I am on Windows 10. The issue is likely regarding secure boot: It should be possible to do the reversing 3:38 to at least get the controller working again. There may be a number of causes according to the support page of the program: !!! It worked great. But after closing my pc and going back into the settings I saw it was back to 5. Why is that? Do I have do this every time I get on to play? I downloaded the latest version from my understanding. If I need to update the software where is the updates? Trying to figure it out because it's awesome!

I had the same issue basically all I did was check if my secure boot was disabled (It was). Then I realized that i was missing a step and i kept forgetting to extract the file so when I did all the steps again WITH extracting the file it worked perfectly and i was able to do it. Hope this helps :) ( I use an Xbox controller so I can confirm that this does work on Xbox controller)

The elite doesn’t overclock very well. Same for elite v2. Both elite versions stay at 250hz even when overclocked at 1000hz.

I have tried virtually everything i have found on the internet to fix my red bar issue, i can reverse the problem but cannot make it so that i have a 1000 polling rate work, i have tried installing on test mode, with integrity checks off, with av off, with the registry edit key set to 1 . @@SacredSphynx I have been playing on Bluetooth for about 2 months and have always had 1.2 - 1.4 ms and then tried this trick and had 1ms wired but it felt so weird Bluetooth is so much better but the delay has been really inconsistent for a few days and I don't know why. It's like 2 - 4 ms now and feels like ps4 or something

yo rockret, I tried this method and my ps4 controller now has 1 ms, like steady 1ms no fluctuations, but when I entered a game of fortnite it seemed that every time I pressed a button on the controller it reads as two button presses in the game. yes!! i have this issue as well. the only way i fix it is uninstalling DS4 and reverting the overclock, and then reinstalling DS4, making sure it works, and then overclocking and it works perfect. but everytime i restart my pc i have to do this over again.;.. not sure of a permanent fix, i know it doesnt work when the light turns to blue when i load fortnite instead of the color of my ds4 profile

G&T HD Yeah I actually downloaded the maintained version of DS4 windows by ryochan then did the OC, and it worked. I used hide ds4 as well in settings because it was still double clicking.

I didn't see any comments relating to Xbox One controller so i confirm i just did it with my Xbox One S pad on Windows 10 and it works. And yes, it definitely has an effect as i 100% feel that the car steering is a bit awkward at first (tested in racing game Trackmania . I think racing games are very good to test it as input lag is very easily noticeable. Or at least in Trackmania). edit: Also an important note for wireless users. My buddy who uses Xbox one controller wirelessly through a dongle, tried the tweak and it also worked for him! So apparently the Xbox dongle also has the capacity to transmit the signal at a higher rate than default 125Hz.

**DESPERATE GAMER** Ive spent the majority of my gaming life with sub par levels of input lag. Im so grateful to have stumbled upon Rocket Science youtube channel, as he seems to be one of the few people who truly understand this whole input lag issue and what it means for the hardcore gamer. I play on a ps4 pro so i know there are limits compared to playing pc for getting low latency and high refresh rates, but I know there is a way to get better than what I have right now. Rocket Science if u read this, I guess my question would be; "What is the most optimal console setup for the least input lag possible?" which console? which controller? what cables? what monitor? what settings? to create the most responsive console experience?
