Jon from ARTV reviews the long awaited, yet highly disappointing, 3rd album ‘Radical Optimism’ by pop artist Dua Lipa. Not quite “pop gone wrong”, but a lack of attitude chemistry with her producers has me missing ‘Future Nostalgia’...

Not quite one of the worst albums of the year, but the marketing would say otherwise Passing off an album as left field while hiding the fact that it panders to the masses is one of the biggest musical red flags an artist can obtain. Dua's now got one herself

If you're expecting another album that is similar to Future Nostalgia than yes, you're probably going to be disappointed. The sound of this new album has shifted imo. But c'mon... Houdini, Training Season, Whatcha Doing, These Walls, Illusion... the vocals on Falling Forever are insane! Maria, Happy For You ... I tried to not compare but just to listen. Honestly the song Houdini which was released first was the song that made me want to listen to more from her in the first place, I hadn't even heard most of Future Nostalgia yet, then I did and wow... I think she did it again. The first 5 tracks I named I think are amazing songs. The rest of the album is mostly great... there was only 2 or 3 songs I didn't vibe with as much. If I purchased this as a CD (which I might) I'd be happy. Those 5 tracks are fire 🔥 the other 3 I named here, I like a lot. I say great job Miss Dua ❤😊

@simonestellini9689 I couldn't even listen to this whole video at first but I made myself listen to it today. Just as I thought, he just made it sound like this whole album except for the song Houdini, just wasn't very good, substandard... though more songs are growing on him... smh everyone is entitled to their opinions but ouch! Thankfully, from what I've read and seen this album has been mostly well received by many, she deserves it. She puts out great stuff along with her team. I hope this album goes far, it needs to. It may not hit like Future Nostalgia but it's great.

The only thing I felt was weird was releasing Houdini and Training Season first. They have a completely different aesthetic than the rest of the album (in music videos and performances). I was so confused because other than Illusion, most of the songs felt nothing like the first 2 singles. And the ocean aesthetic is way different from how the album was first teased (darker colors, old London vibes)

For me, I was already knew "Radical Optimism" would not replicate "Future Nostalgia" so I used that to not overhype my expectations. Despite that, I still felt underwhelmed by "Radical Optimism." The song I like the most on this album has a lyric that encompasses my personal feelings about the album. In "Whatcha Doing," she says she "lost [her] 20/20 vision" which I thought (upon first listen) was an underlying way of her saying she's abandoned "Future Nostalgia" for a new era of music. For me, she lost her 2020 vision of creating a record that could bring something unique and different to the climate of pop music. Its an okay album but it will likely stay in the shadows behind Future Nostalgia.

While I definitely didn't enjoy it as much as Future Nostalgia, I think the term "mid" does this album a disservice. You can tell that Dua Lipa and her collaborators are still trying to push creativity when it comes to creating radio-friendly pop music, and I appreciate that. For me, this album's main offense is just stumbling a bit on the back half, where songs 7-9 feel noticeably clunkier, and as a result, less appealing to the ear. Those tracks are also where I find that the instrumentals overpower Dua's voice in an unflattering way, as you mentioned. But the album as a whole still retains a lot of the strengths that Future Nostalgia brought to my attention.

I thoroughly enjoyed this album! I danced along, enjoyed the vibe. I really feel like a couple years from now people are gonna wake up about this album and realize it’s seriously not that bad. Future Nostalgia was amazing and my favorite of all time, however I feel like she did step up on the lyrical cohesion of this album and the production has some cool intricate details. Maybe I’m just a really big fan, but I feel like there such a heavy negative connotation around this album and it literally just came out a few days ago… but everyone is entitled to their own opinions and music is all subjective as well. And also I feel when she starts performing and bringing these songs to life people will also wake up!

you know, when I first listened to the album I was hardly convienced by it's sound, something about it felt wrong. So the extended version was released later, I listened to it an I fell in love, I listen to it a lot, it has some of her best songs. My conclusion is that the original version's songs are so cut and short that they fall flat including Houdini, I still listen to them comparing side to side with the extended cut and it's more evident that maybe the unextended cut shouldn't have been the original.

I totally agree with this. I LOVE Dua Lipa, I just felt like this wasn’t as psychedelic as they hyped it up to be? A lot of the songs feel like filler. Compared with Christina, for example, with her third album, she changed her image totally, hit both emotional and sonic beats, and it felt like a good continuation of her progression in music. This just feels a bit so so in comparison to Future Nostalgia which was more cutting edge. When she says psychedelic I’m thinking Florence Welch or Jefferson Airplane.

I feel like because of covid her FN tour was delayed right? And because of that delay, she focused on improving the tour or something, then after FN tour wrapped up, she rushed to release RO because so much time has passed (she also got busy because of Barbie and that movie Argylle). Because of not having a lot of time to work on RO, we have an album with a concept that is all over the place and the marketing for it was so confusing and very misleading. This era is not a major flop, but definitely a big setback for her career. She should probably release something great next year or else….

I think even looking at the album cover vs FN’s, you can tell how extremely laid back the vibe of this one is. I think it’s less so that the songs aren’t good, but Dua sounds less optimistic and more laid back. A lot of the music is about falling in love and changing her perspective on love, but none of it really got me feeling in love. But looking back, Love Again absolutely did. That one song on FN accomplished radical optimism more than this whole record.

Yeah im glad she took 4 years but tbh i only remember Houdini and Happy For You as being particularly strong, didnt like maria and these walls for reasons like the julia Michaels writing on these walls, a thing that's already been written by her with cliche lyrics about breaking up- the thing is you can tell she wrote it and it didnt feel all that different from the 5sos one, it felt very formualic and done before, the production was alright but it did not win me over, maria's whilsting really rubbed me the wrong way, and illusion being a bit too 'millienial whoop' heavy, i never usually complain about this but it felt too forced on both of them, most of this isn't bad, i just cant remember this at all. Totally agree its very poor, all the hype it would be brit poppy and Risky its that poor its not setting the world alight with sales the next album is critical after Future Nostalgia , it doesn't help that the singles were very average

Listening to this album right now and I'm also just disappointed. I have the same feeling I had with Lordes last album: Forgettable summer release with 1-2 songs max. that I will ever listen to again. Very sad as Future Nostalgia was so amazing.

I really like this album. It’s at the level of Future Nostalgia, but not many Pop Albums are. I think “If These Walls Could Talk” is a hidden gem on this album.

What really disappointed me is that Dua Lipa's first 2 albums always had THAT ONE SONG. The one where once you hear it, you just know that it's an easy contender for top 10 songs of the year. For Dua Lipa (1st album) it's Blow Your Mind and for Furture Nostalgia it's Levitating. And while Radical Optimism has Houdini, which is very good I'll admit, it's really just not her best of the best. I personally think the extended version of this song is superior. However, a lot of the songs in this album feel very bland. Unfortunately it's a 5/10 for me. 7:04 Yeah, what is up with that? So many disappointments and we're not even halfway through the year. EDIT: Anyways, HAVE YOU HEARD THOSE KENDRICK LAMAR SONGS BECAUSE HOLY SHIT!

You mentioned lizzy mcalpine there in the list of disappointing albums , i was first underwhelmed with older but as i listened to it more it grew on me. It has a different objective than five seconds flat. Drunk running, staying, all falls down are some of her best songs. So i think people should give this one some time. A pop record is only a tiktok hit away from being successful these days.

I've listened to it consistently since it dropped, sadly not for me as a whole body of work. It's too dry for my liking and too direct lyrically if that makes sense? I also am not a fan of the flow of the tracklist, but there are like 4ish songs I do love!

I seem to like different tracks to you but have the same feeling overall - The production doesn't fit and is dull, the only highlight is Dua's vocals and overall very forgettable hopefully she bounces back and goes for a more maximal approach on her next album

I just got done livestreaming this on my channel and of course this appears when I refresh my sub feed haha! I had a really good time with this, but I knew it wasn't gonna top Future Nostalgia even after hearing Houdini when it was released as a single. As inconsistent as the album felt, the fun moments really shined through so I have a hard time calling this weak. The only things I really disliked at all were the lyrics in French Exit and how loud the drums were in Falling Forever.

I have listened to it several times and it does seem flat and has less dance hits overall in comparison to previous albums, for example when Kevin worked with gaga and ronson for perfect illusion it was incredible, it was profound it had a well defined theme and attitude, this one is like ok we got together and this is what we could do. Houdini is amazing but the line get s a bit repetitive for me, it's not doing well in charts as of this moment.

I've only heard the record once but I liked this album indecently. It's no future nostalgia but I like it enough to feel the want to listen again. I'm not too hooked on her first album, that seems like an artist in the making. While it feels like a step down, it's not a big one. Also, I'm loving Lizzy's album. It's a very deliberate album I feel like. But Maggie kinda dropped the ball. I still like that one but it does have a lot of adult contemporary written all over it. It does feel like a stay at home wife/mom feel to it. Listened to while folding laundry.

just for me, Dua’s Radical Optimism is better than her last album Future Nostalgia. I really enjoyed both sonically, but lyrically and songs cohesiveness in the newer album is better, again just for me.

Maybe people should stop talking about how Future Nostalgia os so good, etc, etc. It never return such an era like that and Dua did the right thing to change style and songs mood. You cannot live on with the same melodies and image. Listen and listen better. This is a GREAT pop album. Period.

I’ve always liked Dua Lipa, but this album doesn’t have the personality of the first two. Except Houdini eTraining season, the other songs are cute but they look made by any pop star. She seemed to want to play it easy. One last thing: she said she was inspired by Brit-pop for writing songs, do you hear something that reminds me of that music?I do not.

I’ll be one of the few to say that I kinda preferred this album over Future Nostalgia. Maybe because at the time that album came out, I was already sick of all the 80s pop worship that was floating around at the time and most of the songs on that album sounded the same. I came around on some singles, but idk, I really didn’t care for a lot of the tracks on that album. I liked the more lowkey and psychedelic vibe of this album. Not every track is a hitter, but I found the singles to be really strong, especially the first few tracks. It’s nothing ground breaking, but I like the sound more
