Dual Extrusion Clay Printing With 1mm Nozzle and 0.5mm Layer Height: Woven Pattern

I've been experimenting with dual extrusion in clay printing for the last could of years and more recently have become very interested in a kind of "woven" approach where individual tool paths are laid across one another to make a fine pattern and textile-like surface. This could be interesting aesthetically but also could be used in a scenario where one of the materials printed is combustible or dissolvable in order to create open spaces or lattices within a print. This printer has two independent Z axes, allowing minute adjustments between the height of each nozzle for greater precision in calibration
This is a very small print, using two 1mm print nozzles at 0.5mm layer heights. So while it certainly isn't a perfect print, it's defects may appear magnified in the video. .

I was looking around for a ruler but he happened to be hopping around nearby. Now I feel like I need to point out he's a relatively small bunny, which only emphasizes the scale more. So maybe I need to get a very large bunny to properly scale the smallish one. Scared where this might lead.

wow never thought of that, now I'm curious about this in colorful plastic prints, making crosshatched shades of a color and such

@Tom Laugerman hey Tom did you know that there is a Special clay like material that after firing turns into solid Silver metal 👀?! That could have potential for some interesting prints 😏

There is a setting called ooze shield that might be worth looking at! Cool stuff.

Yes, you have some ooze on the extruder with the darker clay. The fact you don't see it on the light clay means you might be able to eliminate it, but an ooze shield is the other approach.

@@JonS Yes, the analogy here would be printing the same plastic in two nozzles but with different extruder temps, causing one to ooze and the other to not ooze. Water content in clay is similar to nozzle temp in FDM. Too much water and everything gets all gooey. Too little and the process is sluggish or even intermittent.

Take a look at what e3d does about oozing with multiple print heads on their tool changer platform. They do a wipe sequence across a little wire brush head with a taught horizontal wire at the end and a solid state relay turns on a shop vac to pull away the detritus. Something similar could be done for clay with a taught wire over a small warm bowl of water. Just dialing in the viscosity may fix the oozing problem in this clay body but decreasing water may also significantly weaken interlayer adhesion.

Many FDM multicolor processes use a purge block - I'd imagine this would've helped this print, as you could get rid of the excess dark material coming out before you move to the real print. I love the scale of your work. Something about the geometries you print make them seem so much larger than they are, until you zoom out that is!

Why not run with an ooze shield or maybe a Wipe since you can independently control z? As always, I love how the videos are voiced over to explain what we see like if I was one of your students in class. If it wasn't for life, I'd so want to join your classes!

Good suggestion, which I'll look into. However, since the white clay is working as planned without an ooze shield, I'm more inclined to work on the black material to solve the issue. But then I would, because I'm more knowledgeable about clay than code. It's intersting that problems may have material, mechanical, and software solutions. Thanks for your interest!
