Can't wait to see some production spyderco magnacut. I think bbb and spyderco have spent a while on dialing the heat treat... shits exciting.

It was such fun. It's really a dream to have wanted this particular recipe in a steel and to actually get to try it out and have it kick the Death Rope's butt! I have a lot of buy-in haha. Take care Wade!

Hey guys - sorry, I’m behind on comments. The Deka feels great in hand, just got my hands on it 2 weeks ago. I like it better than a Bugout personally, more interesting blade and steel imo. Edge thickness feels pretty good, I’d guess somewhere around 15 thou. Can’t comment too much on the edge retention yet, but lots of tests to come! Thanks guys!

@homeslicesharpening

Do it bro!!! I am getting good results from 250 grit diamond plate coarse and I usually use my King 6K fine since it's so gentle. 17 dps this test, stropped lightly on flat denim loaded with Mother's Mag. Make sure you do all edge-trailing strokes for dual grit and take your time to balance it out, and LET ME KNOW if it's awesome, or if you have questions!

Only concern is I bought it off eBay and the billboarding is lighter than on SPY27 mule team and it might be a clone.

Wow, what a performance! Could you retest a knife that came close but failed previously? That would help rule out the possibility of variation over the length of the rope.

Thanks for the ideas. I did test dual grit M4 twice, but it actually seemed easier the first time, oddly enough. I don't think we can rule out some variation over the length of the rope, so this test is limited in scope.

And that is why I’m dying to get a Spyderco in Magnacut so bad!!! I see Microtech just started using it but they’re a complete joke with heat treating their steels. Their Magnacut probably performs about equal to S30V at best.

@homeslicesharpening Год назад
I wouldn't know about MicroTech, I've never had one. Always thought their OTF's looked cool though. I hope you can score a Spyderco in MC soon - I just got a Hogue Deka, and am excited to get some use in on it!
@cfltitan

@@homeslicesharpening lol it’s funny you mention the Deka because I’m going to be ordering one tomorrow. I’ve been looking around and right now anteaters it’s about the only decent sized folder in Magnacut available for normal working man wages. I did a lot of reading up on them and saw that most hate the cheap feeling scales of the gen 2 with the Magnacut blade. So I’m going to be getting a set of the OG aluminum scales in OD green for it as well. I do hope to find a Spydie in Magnacut one day though because they’re by far my favorite knives.

Iirc those magnacut mules are only 61hrc. Dont quote that as fact, but what I heard from the grape vine. Interesting results. I'd have to think of it like an engineer but I'm too tired. For the thick rope like that, the Russians wrap it with tape and then use wd40 during the testing to clean the tape off the blade intermittently. I'm not sure if this is the best idea to do, but just a thought. Also Phil Wilson went from using 1/2" manila rope to 3/4" rope since it was thicker so that the testing would take less cuts. I uploaded his PDFs on the microstructure page a few days ago, you can read through them. Seamount links. But yeah I think you got the right idea of going bigger. But it won't be idea for smaller knives. So two charts may be needed to compare results. As they won't translate exactly between thick and normal.
@homeslicesharpening
@homeslicesharpening 2 года назад
Nice - I have seen some of Phil's old testing, that's where I got the idea to increase rope size. I think I'm going to rubber band the rope, maybe on both sides of the cut, we'll see. I believe BBB tested his Spyderco Mules and they were 62 and 62.9 respectively, but I have not seen other tests, could be lower. I'll have to check out Phil's data. Thanks!

Thanks for doing these tests, I definitely gotta get me a magna-cut knife. Question: I’ve seen a lot of testing non serrated knives against different materials. Would you consider testing a spyder-edged (serrated spyderco) knife against the death rope? I’m on the spyderco forums and sypderco’s serrations seem to have a cult following, it would be interesting to see why that is.
@homeslicesharpening
@homeslicesharpening Год назад
I would be interested in testing a Spyder-edge knife! I just don’t have any. Do you prefer serrated knives? I’m sure a serrated knife would do well cutting rope, but it would be interesting to compare the 2!
@nandayane
@nandayane Год назад
@@homeslicesharpening I do mostly plain edge knives and am curious about serrated ones, I just don’t have a use case where serrations would offer an advantage to me. However the fanaticism of spyderco’s serration fans is making me question that. I don’t see anyone testing serrated edges so I am really curious about how they do.

Why are you discussing the hardness so extensively in terms of edge retention while the most important thing here is the low angle of the blade and the good (quality) heat treatment. 60 to 63hrc of Magnacut differs in terms of pratical edge retention in the range of 5-10% at best (if all other factors are the same). A low angle of 10 - 13 degree per side provides 3 times more edge retention than an angle like 21dps when cutting through soft stuff where the blade can't chip or fold etc. This blade is good for long and extensive tasks when cutting into soft materials, like this rope. If you go through bones while filleting a fish for example or skinning a boar with such a low angle, it will dull a lot faster as it will lose retention due to minor micro chipping. Great test, though. However, if you strive for high edge retention with Magnacut, pay attention to stuff such as finer, thinner blades, heat treated at 62-64 and sharpened (or having the ability to be re-sharpened) at a low degree angle ( an acute angle - 10-15dps max) if it's not going to be used as a hardworking blade.

Greetings, great feedback and good questions. Yes, I am aware of research that is coming into the forefront now which shows that edge angle is most important to edge retention. The reason that I am talking about HRC so much in this video (and not edge angle) is because the video is 2 years old. At that time, everyone was obsessed with hardness, and although Larrin Thomas and others had done the research to demonstrate that edge angle is actually king when it comes to extending edge life, it did not have much publicity at that time and I had not seen the research. In short - you are right! And I agree. I just didn't know it at the time! Haha, have a great day, good job doing your homework and thanks for the positive tone of your comment!
