Dual Vocational Training - Germany's successful system | Made in Germany

"Learning years aren't earning years," according to an old German proverb. Many apprentices have plenty of experience of that: getting up at the crack of dawn for three years, working in factories or on construction sites, studying theory at vocational school - and all for low wages.
Germany's dual vocational education system makes demands on trainees, but it also has plenty to offer, and more and more university dropouts value it as an alternative. A report by Kilian Schütze-Alinsky.

We need more of this in America's educational system! This delusion that every child needs to go to college is insane and conveys a very disrespectful and unappreciative message to those among us who work with our hands and make it possible for the neurosurgeons of the world to get to work (thank you, mechanics!), work in an environment with operable machinery (thank you machinists and other technicians!), and not be swimming neck-high in human excrement while doing so (thank you custodians of the world!) SMH....really our system needs to pull its head out of its undercarriage and start valuing trades other than those that require a phenomenally-expensive sheepskin to practice!

Although the U.S. educational system/s is not identical to Germany's. We do in fact have thousands of vocational schools/ colleges. Also some vocational High Schools. I do see advantages in the German system, as the focus is heavier on skills which will be more directly used in a person's field of choice. As opposed to a bunch of useless information, which is theoretically supposed to make you a more well rounded individual. The German model works, because in any first world economy, more skilled tradesmen & women are needed than white collar office types etc..

What a pleasure to see the respect for manual work at all levels of society and the willingness/eagerness of young people to do the work well. Unfortunately here in Israel [and speaking generally] anyone who wants to work with his/her hands is considered to be one who couldn't make the grade of University. The level of work is as you can imagine...and to top it off there are almost no Trade Schools....unbelievable !!!!!!!

Danny Hughes, Israel is an extremely young nation, but in America, the last two hundred years have been about scale. Hamilton wanted an American a non-hereditary aristocracy, and I learned in high school, from the best teacher ever, how he pulled it off and how its legacy remains today. For instance, as a small farm-hold or businessman, you and I would have to pay every cent of tax due each and dollar or acre owned. To have too much (scale) becomes a liability, but that's not REALLY (tax cheat) an issue for the very rich in America. On top of that, politicians like Trump afford the trillions of dollars more of legal tax breaks, and they in turn loan those tax monies back to the government and college students that cannot be for forgiven. The irony is that we're putting ourselves in MASSIVE debt to work at their firms and because there are more graduates than 25 years ago, there is enough supply of workers competing to offer lower pay.

The system is definitely superior to most other training systems. However, bad training companies are a fundamental problem. They train their trainees poorly or not at all and only see them as cheap assistants. I e.g. I trained as a warehouse clerk at a forwarding company. While classmates in the vocational school were already working with modern IT technology, I was walking around with notes like in 1990. I was only allowed to make a forklift license (although it is compulsory) because the labor inspectorate put pressure on during a random check. I was more likely to have trained as a gardener or garbage collector. Although I went to the IHK with another trainee, it did not take action, it ignored it, because the IHK is happy about every training company, whether the quality is right doesn't matter, the main thing is that the numbers are right.

German culture is fascinating. ..like France they still seem to really value skills ... it happens in the UK but in general after training there is maybe not the professionalism and theory. 0 hr contracts and lucky to have a job in the UK.

@@lordimamsupriadi3936 that is cool. Yes a lot of people here in Scotland go into construction too, after school. In France and Germany they try and encourage learning in college for higher skill jobs, and you see it a lot more. Here in Scotland lots of people may work in shops and call centres too when looking for work... OK jobs but often short contracts

I agree with Betsy Collins 1000%,Tell it like it is, And for those that don't show any value to what she say,Than whoever they are should be re-educated, And pass the torch to other generations and the one's that had got strip and cheated out of opportunies like this, It doesn't matter weather it's Vocational trades, college or universities. Conservative thinkers grow & smart'in up.

Europeans are more practical than other countries even in terms of transport. They just use bicycle instead of cars. Bicycles are cheaper, healthier and cleaners than cars. While in other countries, most of young people become slaves of cars: overwork to pay for cars.

Le Dinh, I had a wonderful German partner in graduate school who told my why Germans are the way they are: education, and particularly clear understanding of almost 600 hundred years of constant war. More importantly, she said their nation doesn't allow individuals to become incredibly rich because historically this leads economic misery for the many, war, then compounded economic misery for the many.
