Duane Allman & The Allman Brothers; Song Of The South (Preview) 

There was never a better guitar....not ever......and there never will be. Duane's playing was the pinnacle of tone, style, emotion, technique and timing. There is no "raising the bar" beyond or above Duane Allman.

I use to go to Piedmont Park and be totally mesmerized by Duane playing slide guitar. He was awesome. He left this earth too soon. Bob Burns, original drummer for Skynryd told me one night, "Don't worry Dean, your guitar will always tell you were to go. May they both R.I.P.

Exactly. Amen. Like Hendrix, Duane was hearing something in his head and soul and he couldn't get it out fast enough. The music was not forced. It just flowed out, as you said. It seemed so easy to him, because it was. I heard that sweet sound with my ears so many times. That tone...sounds like a horn, or a train whistle blowing lonely in the distance. Soar on, Skydog. I can't wait to see this movie.

Nobody was better then Duane not even Jimi as far as my ears are concerned .If Jimi Hendrix Experience were playing & The Original 6 Allman Brothers Band playing same night I’d be at The Allman Brothers Band show without a doubt .

You could always pick out Duane's guitar work because he always drove the music from the front. He always seemed to be anxious to get to the next note. I used to work construction and we had a boss that was managing several sites at the same time. Anyway he would show up and start pointing and barking to things that needed to be done. He would stay most times about 20 minutes and then leave for the next site.It would take the next half hour to realize that he was gone and slow down. That;s the way Duane played. Hard driving, seemingly just ahead of the beat. He would play that way for twenty minutes worth of soloing, then blend back into the band. He was one of a kind. Long live The Sky Dog.

Duane was cool, played great guitar, and "knew where he was going". Joe Walsh said he "learned slide guitar from Duane Allman." Enough said.

His tone, his feel and soul of his playing... was unlike anyone ever. Derek is an incredible guitarist...but just does not have the"feel', the 'soul' of Duane's totally unique style (Plus Derek forces notes,,, Duane let them flow) Over the years many can play like Duane, many are 'technically' better and faster than Duane was- but NO one has the "feel" or tone nor soul in the notes which Duane played. Rest in peace Duane Allman.. you are truly missed

This is GREAT news! Thanks so much for posting. I've heard of Gregg's upcoming movie "My Cross to Bear" but hadn't heard a thing about "Song of the South". I always love seeing the incomparable Skydog get his due!

A lot of the Allman Brothers' first album owes more to Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac than it does anything that would be classified as "southern". Duane was a man of the world.

I agree with you, However, there is a certain 'vibe/feel' to the majority of southern bands.. perhaps the duel guitar approach (Skynyrd, Outlaws, CDB, Tucker, Molly Hachet..) But in my mind, many southern bands have a distinct sound.

NattyBumppo I'm not saying there is no southern rock, I'm saying that the Allman Brothers are not a southern rock band. The quote you referenced is from a Lynyrd Skynyrd song, a band that has openly embraced the southern rock label. The Allman Brothers have come out and said many times that they don't like to be called a southern rock band, and I tend to agree with them because the vast, vast majority of their music has very little in common with what people associate with southern rock. Don't get me wrong, the Allman Brothers are the greatest band in history, I'm not insulting them, I'm just saying that calling them a southern rock band is ridiculous if you listen to more than just Ramblin Man.

I guess the comparisons are inevitable since Derek plays slide in Duane's band. It's unfortunate since one or the other tends to get diminished and they're both great players - but I agree Duane had a special something that separates him from most everyone else - I guess "soul" is a good a word as any to describe it.

Of course not without Duane. But they are still a great band, far more than just a cover band.

This documentary is bullcrap. There were a few bands that were around at that time. The Allman Brothers didn't start attention to the south in the late 60s. The Skynyrd band was playing in all southern states . For one. Zz top. I can mention so many others. Alot of black bands were started. There was so much that began to happen with southern bands in the late 60s and it wasn't Allman Brothers who started it. Whoever did this documentary must be related to the Allman Brothers.
