Have to say...1985 in north Charleston sc. Small club and maybe 20 people there. I told my buddies at work but none went...at a break only Gregg on stage, which was at least 8 inches high, looked at me and asked 'WHAT WOULD U LIKE TO HEAR'.I said Melissa and he picked up a 12 string and sang that song,a great moment in my life while everyone else was at the bar. They missed a once in a lifetime opportunity to hear a humble and really the greatest ...ever.

For Gregg's kids, your dad was a humble man who played Melissa for me when no one else even played attention to the greatest singer and performer ever, even if only one person was there,me. Thanks and still love you Gregg...

I never had a chance to really meet him but my slightly inebriated dancing made him laugh at a show in Toronto 20+ years ago. It's not much but I feel good knowing I put a smile on his face knowing how many times The Brothers did the same for me. Cheers!

Hey all ABB fans,... if you have not already read Greg Allman's book ' My Cross To Bear ' I suggest strongly that you do. The entire story from day one of the band is revealed with no holds barred. After reading this book I soon realized that the ABB deserved everything they achieved by earning it through the survival of very intense trials and tribulations. A true story of perseverance and intestinal fortitude.

I do not know what it would be like to live my ups and downs of life under public scrutiny. What i saw was Greg Allman and band members in their pursuit and love to play not quitting. Much in honor of keep playing. And love for music. I have no good answer as to why some are taken before we all feel they should. How we left on earth find ways to work through our grief. Allman brothers band will no doubt be forever played. And missed. The documentary is about how the band members dealt with the losses. Only we can speculate affected their lives the band and ever changing world we live in. Thank you much

Phil Walden managing the band again. Bill Graham opens up a new club called the Filmore South. At 00:50 the guy talks about the band's music being indescribable then mentions two jazz influenced songs; "Jessica" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed", both written by Dickey Betts. Nice to see his song-writing get specific mention. Jessica won the band a Grammy for best rock instrumental performance and In Memory of Elizabeth Reed was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Dickey wrote many songs, and his "Ramblin' Man" was their highest charting song.

I just got done watching the whole 2 hour long doc "After the crash" They talk about Dickey more than they talk about Duane. The documentary is about the band after Duane's death and it goes through the Berry, Lamar, and the break up and reformation and the Dan Toler years. They talk about Warren and they go all the way up to the Derek trucks years and the bands graceful departure a few years back.

One of the first albums I ever bought was a Kmart blue light special, the all man joys. I have no clue what happened to it. But I still have beginnings. I literally wore out Elizabeth reed when I first got that album. I remember hearing Phil Walter's brother(can't remember his name) talking about why he couldn't get Lynyrd Skynyrd signed to Capricorn because they sounded like the Allmans, which he totally disagreed with. He was absolutely right. You say 'southern rock' and Skynyrd comes to mind (although I was listening to Black Oak wayyyy before anybody heard Skynyrd on the radio) not to mention half a dozen other bands that followed like Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, the Outlaws, etc. But I wouldn't put that label on the Allmans. Their music was so unique they deserve a one of a kind 'label'. NOBODY sounds like the Allmans.

R.I.P. Greg Allman(5/27/17) Gregg Allman, the soulful singer-songwriter and rock n' blues pioneer who founded The Allman Brothers Band with his late brother, Duane, and composed such classics as "Midnight Rider," "Melissa" and the epic concert jam "Whipping Post," has died at age 69, Billboard has learned. He was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 1999 and underwent a liver transplant in 2010. He "passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia," according to a statement on Gregg Allman's official website, noting that the family planned to release a statement soon. "Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times." Gregg’s longtime manager and close friend Michael Lehman said, “I have lost a dear friend and the world has lost a brilliant pioneer in music. He was a kind and gentle soul with the best laugh I ever heard. His love for his family and bandmates was passionate as was the love he had for his extraordinary fans. Gregg was an incredible partner and an even better friend. We will all miss him.” With his long blond hair, cool facade and songs that chronicled restless, wounded lives, Allman came to personify the sexy, hard-living rock outlaw in a life marked by musical triumph and calamitous loss. Billboard will have more information about the specifics behind Allman's death as the story develops. Allman fronted his band for 45 years, first alongside Duane and then as its sole namesake, after his older brother -- regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in rock history -- was killed in a motorcycle accident in November 1971, just as their trailblazing Southern rock tracks were taking hold on the charts. Soldiering on through grief and then the eerily similar death of bassist Berry Oakley just one year and 10 days after Duane died, Allman and the band became as well known for their stoic survival as they were for their freewheeling concerts. The Allman Brothers Band first reached the Billboard 200 albums chart with its self-titled debut in 1970. Over the next 34 years, the group charted 24 more albums, including four top 10 sets. It topped the list once, with Brothers and Sisters, which reached No. 1 for five weeks in 1973. The group also landed 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits between 1971-1981. It earned its best showing with “Ramblin Man,” which reached No. 2 in October 1973, and reached the top 40 two more times with “Crazy Love” (No. 29, 1979) and “Straight From the Heart” (No. 39, 1981). The band also logged a No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart in 1990 with “Good Clean Fun.” In total, since Nielsen Music began tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991, Allman Brothers Band have sold 9.3 million albums in the U.S. As a soloist, Allman notched seven charting albums on the Billboard 200, including one top 10 set: the No. 5-peaking Low Country Blues in 2001. On the Hot 100, he claimed a pair of entries with “Midnight Rider” (No. 19 in 1974) and “I’m No Angel” (No. 49 in 1987). The latter also topped the Mainstream Rock Songs chart that same year. After years of tragedy, dramatic breakups and tense reconciliations, a reconstituted Allman Brothers Band engineered a renaissance starting in the mid-'90s that put their fiery brew of old-time blues, jazz and country rock squarely at the forefront of music's thriving jam scene.

Where's the rest of the video? The video is good, but it leaves the major question of how the band continued wide open. Yes, Gregg couldn;t lead the band. Berry tried, but couldn;t either. Those questions resolved themselves. However, the question of how the band continued and who lead them, is totally unresolved. The video dies just as Duane regretfully did. The fact is, Dickey Betts took the helm and steered the band forward and ultimately to their number one song, "Ramblin' Man" and the Album Brothers and Sisters. That was the first album "After the Crash(s)" and it's not addressed at all. It's as though the video, as good as it is, suddenly drives off a cliff and there are no answers or stories there to resolve the initial title. It's as though there are chapters 1, 2, and 3, but the 4th with the answer is entirely left out, much less the epilog..
