Dubia Roaches are the best feeder insect for your bearded dragon. Feeding your pet bearded dragon can cost a lot of money if you are regularly buying feeder insects at the pet store. But you can raise your own Dubia Roaches and save tons of money. By setting up a Dubia Roach colony for breeding and feeding, you can have a permanent supply of healthy feeder insects for your bearded dragon or other exotic pet. Dubia Roaches are an ideal feeder insect. They are easy to house, raise, and breed. They are also very healthy for your animal. This video will talk about how much your bearded dragon will eat and how much it could cost but also show you how to setup your own breeding colony for Dubia Roaches. It truly is easy.
I invite you to check out my other bearded dragon videos!

Dubias CAN fly, but it's really rare. A male got out of the tub at night and flew onto my pillow. You best believe after scolding him I put him back and spent most of the night finding the escape route (tape doesn't last forever apparently) and reinforcing the tub. XD

Dog food is high in protein, which the roaches are enough protein for bearded dragons. Might want to change the food for the roaches, could be overloading the bearded. Would recommend standing the egg cartons up, allowing everything to fall out.

Oranges also give the them heartburn. If he stops eating them for a while that could be why.

I’ve watched a ton of videos as I’m preparing my own set up, and so far yours has been the most informative. Thank you! I did want to pass along information that was given to me. I was told we should not feed our roaches citrus fruits because the acids are bad for our beardies. They apparently pass along enough acids even via gutload. I use yellow squash and apples, and they go crazy for them. Much easier clean up, too. :) Thank you again! Excellent video!

I am trying to set up my own colony for my veiled chameleon. This was a great...quick and on point video, thank you! I'm new to this reptile world and have no community to ask questions to so I do a lot of research! One of my biggest questions has been...ok, how to I dig through this whole colony and get the feeders out? You mentioned setting up a feeder colony. I'm very interested!!! Have you done a video on that or can you elaborate on how to do that? Also, other videos have mentioned that a heat source is needed? What are your thoughts about how to accomplish that?

hi!! i love your beardie and the care u give him is amazing u seem like an awesome guy!! do you go see him over the weekends? and will you upgrade his tank once he's fully grown or do you think he gets to roam around enough that he doesn't need a bigger tank?
@richardroyster405
@richardroyster405 4 года назад
Thanks! I do come in every weekend to feed him, water the tank, and often give him a brief soak in water. From my understanding, the tank is big enough for a full grown beardie. He's about 16-18 inches now and seems to do very well. He gets to come out frequently because I have a lot of visitors who want to see him. I'm hoping I won't need a bigger tank because that would be expensive! There is a lot of variety in the current tank and I see him utilizing a variety of different spaces. So as of now, he seems good!
@rhys2570
@rhys2570 4 года назад
@@richardroyster405 that's awesome! as long as he doesn't start showing signs of stress once he's full grown, then the tank should be totally fine! but i know a lot of beardies have to get upgraded tanks because they start surfing on the glass or become very inactive & darkly colored almost all the time! if he ever does need an upgrade, it wouldn't be too hard to make your own larger tank which would be less expensive, or even add onto the current tank he has! any extra space is better than no extra space, and i've seen beardies who have tanks taller than they are wide thriving and greatly enjoying the space to climb around. he seems to be doing wonderfully and you're taking fantastic care of him so i'm not worried about that hehe but i wanted to maybe give some options if he ever does need an upgrade! i hope this doesn't come as unwanted >< i have my own beardie so i like to share what i know with other beardie owners, sometimes it's not wanted LOL but!! he really does seem to be thriving which is super amazing you're doing wonderful :D

I know this video is a few months old but I have been looking around see8ng different peoples methids of dubia breeding as I am gonna start a colony next year. Comment 1: Citrus can be harmful to bearded dragons. Although the dunias should process most of it some can still be passed from feeder to beardie so I would reccomend carrot or potato for moisture veges. Comment 2. You should gut load ecen your breeders and provide them with some kind of bug grub there are many online recipes or premade store ones such as repashy or fluker's. The reason for this is that dubia nymphs start out eating the waste from adults(eww) so the healthier the parets and the waste are the healthier the babies. Comment 3: Cool video you seem like a great principal wish I felt the same about my school administration growing up.
@PirateNinjaKitteh
@PirateNinjaKitteh 3 года назад
comment 1 conflicting info: you should feed your feeders oranges about once a week. bearded dragons need two things to really thrive: vitamin d3 (real sunlight) and vitamin A (which can be collected from oranges). Dubia roaches love oranges specifically - feeder insects like roaches and crickets digest oranges differently than bearded dragons do. The citric acid is broken down during the digestion process, so it's easier on your beardie's digestive system and then when they've eaten your roaches, they get their vitamin

It looks like you are missing an important light in your enclosure you want a t5 high output 10.0 uvb and for that size enclouser it needs to be mounted under the screen on the inside the coil uvb bulb are not even worth it as they don't provide the needed uvb light that a bearded dragons need to prevent metabolic bone disease. The new recommend uvd light need's to cover 1/2 of the length of the enclosure

I’ve heard from other Dubai-raising videos that dog/cat food isn’t good for them because it’s too high in protein. Also I’ve also heard that you want ventilation on the sides of the bin. Other than those issues I like your set up. Your reptile is very cute… and hungry. 😂

IIRC I purchased some from dubiaroaches.com because a growing Beardie eats A LOT. He's was crushing the roaches and my breeders couldn't keep up. He's full grown now and will easily eat 20-30 roaches a couple times a week. I supplement his diet with greens and mealworms.

@richardroyster405
@richardroyster405 3 года назад
Roaches need a day/night cycle but I have put black duct tape all around my tank. They get sufficient notice of the day/night cycle through the vent holes. I think darker is better as long as they still get a cycle. It took me quite a while to get a breeding population going because a young beardie eats A LOT. Now that my beardie is full grown he is eating significantly less and I have an abundance of roaches.

I want to go strictly Dubias and I was doing so well. He didn't have any meal worms for probably six months then I got cocky and gave away a bunch of dubias. This was right before Didgie went on a feeding frenzy that lasted a month. He decimated the Dubia population. I've got tons of baby dubias but I want them to get bigger before feeding them to him. Long story short, the meal worms are a backup plan and he's been chomping them down for the last month. Hopefully in another two weeks he will me off the meal worms. You are right about the benefits of super worms, it's just they are harder to raise.

I struggled thinking about that. I decided not to for now. My experiment with the natural logs as a hide didn't work out great and it was a pain to manage. Do you use a substrate of any kind? What I have found that my roaches like the best are egg cartons and the little paperboard tubes that come with aluminum foil - not paper towel rolls. They hate those. The diameter on the aluminum foil roll is much smaller and they LOVE IT.

Just a couple of notes: 1. If you feed the roaches to the bearded dragon, you shouldn’t feed them oranges as the citrus could be lethal to the bearded dragon 2. The roaches thermoregulate themselves so ideally you want to put the egg trays vertically and not horizontally Cheers! 👍🏻
@richardroyster405

Citrus fed to roaches is not lethal to Beardies. Urban legend. Stacking egg crates vertically is preferred, but by container was a bit short. I've actually made a different container since with a little more head room and it works perfectly.
