I bought the unweighted version. I really like the shape of the pieces, and the unweighted boxwood still has adequate weight. It's quite a bit denser wood than the original 1950s wood.
Thanks for your information of the 1950 Dubrovnik set. I love your channel. And I almost bought the Royal Chess Mall version of the 1950 Dubrovnik set. But I have to agree with the first video, and the Staunton Castle version is still the holy grail version of the 1950 Dubrovnik sets. I just order my Staunton Castle version today in Ebony. As I still want my black pieces black, even though it is not the original color of the 1950 design.
I have to thank you for all the time and attention you have invested into not only comparing all the 1950 Dubrovik sets worth looking at; but also, for reaching out to Royal Chess Mall and helping them to get it more correct with your upgrade design notes. The Noj is out of the question for me, so my choice was limited between the Castle Staunton and Royal Chess Mall. I was only able to make my decision because of you caring enough to reach-out to RCM and work with them in correcting the worst of the flaws of their previous offerings. Because of you and work excellent work with RCM, I ordered my set for RCM yesterday. Perhaps in 6 months I will add the CS version to my collection; but for now, the RCM 1950 Dubrovnik replica is the one on it's way to my home. Since you now have a working relationship with RCM, do you think you could suggest to them to begin offering replica/reproductions of the 1950 Folding Box-style Chessboards with go with these Chessmen?
Once again, thank you very much for your feedback! It is impossible to make a mistake with Staunton Castle or RCM Dubrovnik, I believe both are very nice choices. The RCM is a little bit thicker than SC but with the broad and wide RCM knight it comes naturally to see the rest of the pieces that will follow its size. All 3 Dubrovniks, NOJ, SC and RCM have something to stand out. I believe NOJ got the best proportions but the knights from other sets are more appealing to my eye (there are actually 2 versions of NOJ 1950s). Furthermore, I see RCM knight as the most beautiful even it is to some extent different from the original, but in this case, I would dare to open the topic of surpassing the original knight. Yes I know is a little bit of blasphemy but that is how I feel about it. Because of that knight, I totally forgive the rest of the pieces being a bit chunkier than the original. And SC is pretty balanced with all the pieces and the knight's beauty, it's awesome no doubt about that. Hope we get them all one day! :)
This rook looks more correct than the old one but overall this reproduction is still very different from the original vintage Dubrovnik but for playing it is suitable.
Thanks for the comment. Yes every replica same some percentage of being different that the original. I believe this set is somewhat thicker than original but still successful, the knight has a bit different flavour than original but I find it very successful and appealing
@@RandomChessTalk the original dubrovnik is very different from the replica when it comes to the aesthetic side and proportion, also the style of wood turning in former Yugoslavia is very different from the indian one. Noj has been more successful in making replicas but it is still not as good as the original one. But if we want a set for eveyday play this replica will do the job although might be a bit too chunky for blitz and bullet chess
@@kevinwellwrought2024 I just received my set and the rooks need a slight diet, also the cuts in the turret need to be deeper but otherwise the piece is still enjoyable to handle.
@@denethorpalantir2815 That is a pity! Problem is the copy they make looks fake and somewhat funny because they still do not have that subtle skill and understanding of art. Also, the knights seem chunky and the heads of the king and queen not elegant enough like the original set. The slight faults are common in their chess sets and I have heard several other customers’ complaint. I also believe for such a chess set that may cost less than $10 in India to make it $270 is extortionate
Great to see! Although I thought I heard you in one of the videos say that the bishop is not the original oval but in royal chess mall they do a teardrop shaped that is also not original?
Sir you have an excellent memory that's fully true. I will remind them about that so they can also decide about that. The rook was a priority to be upgraded in my opinion. The bishop needs fine line change but it's not a deal breaker even in this form. Amazing knight makes me forgive anything :D
