Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2010 | Nestled inside its mighty ramparts is Dubrovnik, the "Pearl of the Adriatic." From this remarkably preserved medieval fortress city, we venture into less-touristed corners of the former Yugoslavia. In Bosnia-Herzegovina, we visit Mostar - war-torn in the '90s, but bursting with promise today. In Montenegro, we sail the fjord-like Bay of Kotor and explore its mysterious, mountainous interior. #ricksteveseurope #croatia #mostar

I just wanted to point out one small detail. At 1:00 you said we will meet 3 major ethnic groups saying Croats, Serbs, and Muslims. Instead of Muslims you should have said Bosniaks, which is their real name. A Muslim would be a religious category and not ethnic. Thank you and keep making such videos. Rick has also not filmed episodes about Serbia. In December 2012, I visited Beograd (Belgrade), Serbia, and had a great time. While the city is dominated by blocky, communist-era buildings, there are pockets of hidden beauty. Kalemegdan Park, twenty-four hours after a snowstorm, was astonishingly beautiful for my evening walks! The Church of St. Sava is richly ornate and HUGE! The old historic cafe "?" (Yes, that is its name --- a question mark!) is cute and old-world charming with small, wooden tables. Give Belgrade a try. The Serbs I encountered were delightful.

In 1987 I visited Belgrade Yugoslavia while friends were posted in the Canadian Embassy. I didn’t get to visit other areas while I was there. I did get a beautiful painting of Dubrovnik as artists would go door to door selling their framed artwork. I’m not sure what their currency is now, when I was there it was Dinars. They were an extremely poor country at that time. In the city there was produce markets outside their grocery store. The produce was amazing! The beef was delicious! Their cattle had not gone to modern ways of feeding their cattle. The flavours took me back to when I was growing up in the 50s/60s.

@vladimirspasojevic2969
@vladimirspasojevic2969 7 лет назад
Regarding of what the priest said, don't take it so serious. For them noone who is not religious is not a Serb. Serbian Orthodox church is one of the reasons why the muslims are now called "Bosniaks" and prior to war they were predominantly muslim Serbs and to a (far) lesser extent muslim Croats, or simply just Yugoslavs. When it comes to your ancestry, it is possible that some of your ancestors changed faith if you are not of Orthodox background, however there were many catholics in Croatia which considered themselves as Serbs, especially in Dubrovnik. If you are wondering how come your ancestors are Serbs but they come from Croatia, it is actually very simple. Serbs are the largest of the south Slavic peoples and their number in Croatia was extremely high. I don't want to get into politics now but considering that during the WW2 Nazi Croats killed around 1.5 million Serbs in Croatia and Bosnia and during the Yugoslavian war 1992-1995 Croats expelled more than 200.000 Serbs from present-day Croatia (they mostly fled to Serbia), it shows how many Serbs actually lived in that area. Regardless of the genocide and the ethnic cleansing in the 20th century, Serbs are still by far the largest minority in Croatia.
