Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2008 | Few travelers venture beyond Prague to experience the Czech Republic's many cultural riches and offbeat delights. We'll get started with a whirlwind of Art Nouveau, local pub music, stinky-cheese tasting, river rafting, and peat bathing in places like Olomouc, Moravský Krumlov, Třeboň, and Konopiště. We'll also tour a remarkable memorial to the Holocaust in Terezín, and the charming castle town of Český Krumlov. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #czechrepublic

Thank you very much for your wishes. Everyone should know that this country and its beauty was also build by Germans who lived here for centuries and I am proud to acknowledge this. And German people will always be welcomed here!

I would like to suggest not to use Czechia, as it has a bad connotation for older generation (Nazi's term Tschechei). If uou feel that Czech republic is too long, use Czechlands, or what Czech call it, Cesko (soft C/tch).

I went to these places even before Rick Steves promoted these places. It was amazing to go to these places when you did not see too many tourists. For me personally go mid September. No big crowds because all the college students and families have gone back home. The weather is better also. Take your time and don't rush yourself in these places. Spend at least 3 days in these areas.

By the way... I kinda miss Kutná Hora here. I know there is a lot to mention and you can't cram all the beautiful places into 25 minutes but at least few words... In the 14th century, before the Hussite wars, Kutná Hora was one of the richest cities in the entire Europe. It was all thanks to silver mining and production of coins called Pražský groš which was very popular european currency at that time. Kutná Hora is now listed as a UNESCO world cultural heritage (amongst other 11 places in Czechia).

@@MrBlair-ft2li I have never been to Tbilisi thought one day I would love to. I know some people who been there or are from there and I think Prague is definatelly a better choice. At least in terms of an economy and geographical location. Also, in my opinion there is a lot more to do in Prague and the choice of international cusine is wider as its more developed city. You could live on the outskirts of Prague if you wish to live near the nature but still with an easy distance to the city. Retired life can be quite friendly with mushrooming, blueberry hunting, actual hunting, castle visiting, or trekking across the country all very safely.

@iglidor
@iglidor 7 лет назад
Amine Tube It is pretty simple. People in Czech republic and in Europe in general got pretty quickly alergic to immigrants who marched in our countries without bothering to take any ID or legal documents, who came here without any knowledge of our languages, no plan on where to live and work and no idea how to find either of them and yet at the same time shouting from bottom of their lungs how we are responsible for them and that we have to take care of them and allow them whatever they want. Obviously such outlook rubbed lot of people around here wrong. If you want to avoid all this, it is pretty simple: Learn language of country where you want to move in. If you can't learn that language (either due to time constrants or simply no source to learn it from), it can be skipped but then you should secure place to live in and job in that country BEFORE you move in because later here it would be very hard to do so without knowledge of local language. English will not help you everywhere. And of course go through legal routes to get legal documents that will allow you to live here. Unless you are criminal or drug addict they will not make you any problems to aquire them. Also important thing to realize is that Czech Republic is mostly atheistic. There is not much support for religion here. No one is forbidding anyone to believe in whatever he wants but if you are religious, do not expect anyone to bend out of their way because of it or people be interested in it. If you do above mentioned things, you will be accepted without any problems. People around never complain about someone working here. They simply dislike those who came here with intent to not work yet full of demands.

@irenaprazanova2549
@irenaprazanova2549 3 года назад
@@skipnobodycares2018 well, there still are some people. At least from Czech republic (and Slovakia) there are quite a lot of people that have experienced those horendous things and are alive. Interesting thing is that majority of those people have opened up about it and made lots of interviews about their experiences. That must've been really hard for them, but they did it so that younger generations know how it was. Actually, there was in Český Krumlov a lady, who has experienced the holocaust as a teenage girl, who was doing meet ups with classes from schools in the region and talked about her teenage years completely openly, until she unfortunately passed away in spring of 2020. She was one of the sweetest old ladies you could ever meet. There is almost a year long time in every school in Czechia, when students are learning about WWI and WWII. Its needed that younger people know about what was happening during that time. This is extremely imporant, and everywhere in the world people have to learn in detail about these inhuman things. Never ever in history this should be forgotten. Sorry for this being so long, I thought I could've share some more informations.

Another interesting fact about Terezín is that the killer of archduch Ferdinand was imprisoned there.

From the video, it might look as if we were Orthodox before we joined Catholic Austria. But actually, we were Orthodox only for 100 years. Then we were Catholic for 400 years, and then mostly Protestant (we had our own Reformation before Martin Luther).

thank god most Czechs are atheists. I can't help but notice with the increase in capitalism and cars religion is starting to fool more Czechs.

Don't be hateful towards religious people. Besides I wouldn't say that most Czechs are atheist, but are either agnostic or prefer not to share their personal information. Czech Americans, and I'm sure many Czechs, are practicing Catholics

Unoriginal Username Agnosticism is basically atheism. As agnostic people don't believe in god.

Agnosticism isn't necessarily atheism. It just means that one is unsure of the existence of God, not openly denying it

Rick I am from India. It is quite surprising to know that Romas are from India and still they are living as an ethnic group with distinct culture.

I seriously feel a weird sense of longing towards central europe, even though i haven't really been there besides 1-2 cities. I am about to believe i am reincarnated after this video.

You know all of Europe looked like Prague not all that long ago. Seriously, WW2 destroyed like 90% of European architecture. Really sad

Hi guys, Cesky Krumlov is also known for its vampire story. Well known all over the Europe in the 18th century ( princess Eleonore von Schwarzenberg). Go to explore it and taste a very good fish food, traditional in this region ( fish breeding)...

Czechs slovaks hungarians may be lots other than slavs. After all - that was once the Austro-Hungarian empire, I know my mother is slovak and she married my father who is British and lived in the UK, and shares more views with Anglosaxons, and with Germans than with Russians - Her original last name is actually Germanic - and she is closer to that than even Ukranian in her mentality

John Bilsbury not just Austro-Hungarian empire, but we were also part of Holy Roman Empire for a many centuries.....while Russia had influence here for only 40 years. Before World War II, Germans made 22% of population in Czechoslovakia, thats why many Czechs have german surnames.

Technically Hungarians aren't Slavic, but are descendants of the ancient Finnic tribe the Magyars

Unoriginal Username Whatever they are is beside the point although I know that many people from those countries could not live and cooperate with Russia - I have relatives from Slovakia and was speaking to someone from there today. Russia is a different mentality from Europe and they just could not work together. Like it or not

I'm sorry, but it is not true. The truth is, that older Slovaks people who have lived in "socalism" like Russians, young people are raised under the west influence and like West, especially the USA. The nation is deep divided. Situation in East of Evrope is similar, by the way in Germany too.

We are culturaly more close to Germans and Austrians than to other slavs, that's fact but most of Czech people deny that.

I love Prague though it was the only city in Czech Republic I've visited due to time constraint. It was like entering a storybook. But been to Old Town and New Town, Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Astronomical Clock, Wenceslas Square, various churches, etc. Would be happy to return when it's already safe to travel.
