I spend a lot of my working week in front of my computer and I have started to think I should place more value on making that experience more comfortable. To this end, I went in search of a nice keyboard...
If you like keyboards and you don't already know the channel (or if you just want to watch a knowledgeable person talk about his passion), please allow me to introduce you to Chyrosran22 / chyrosran22

I love your content! Pinning this as it's an honour to see you here! I'll paste in my usual pinned comment text below... *Afterthoughts & Addenda* *Erratum* - You may have noticed that I transposed the up and down arrows. Weird and sort of embarrassing, but I just put them on wrong and never looked at them after that. Rows 4 and 5 are either the same or very similar shapes, so there was no discontinuity to feel. *Touch Typing* - Yes, I am aware that the end of the video is a bit 'hunt and peck'. When the camera is rolling and I am aware of it, this often leads to what appears to be awkwardness of movement. I can touch type (I learned from a professional typist, on an electric typewriter in the 1980s). I prefer not to use a full touch typing method any more, as it's terribly uncomfortable, but also what you saw here is not characteristic or natural either.

If you cast a tinted peg the light will still shine through as blue, it will just be attenuated slightly. If you cast a peg that contains a fluorescent pigment, the light will actually be a different color. Just make sure that the fluorophoric pigment you choose is activated by light in the 400-450 nm range. Hope this helps.

I don’t spend money very much at all. I go to work, come home, pay rent, buy food, play video games, that’s it. Besides those expenses all of my money goes into savings. So, when it comes to the things I *do* decide to buy, I am very much willing to spend top dollar if I know I will use it often, or get joy out of it. It’s a little silly, but one of these items is Brioche bread. I love brioche bread. Hot dog rolls, hamburger buns, and loaves of bread. I would rather spend $3.99 on a brioche loaf then 99c on a store brand loaf because it makes sandwiches that much more enjoyable to me. I’ve always thought about it through a cost/time comparison. “Would I spend an extra $3 for about 12 sandwiches that I’ll like? Absolutely. Would I spend an extra $50 on a keyboard that I’ll probably use for hundreds, maybe thousands of hours that’ll be far more comfortable? Of course.” My girlfriend doesn’t understand it and teases me from time to time, but in my mind if it’ll give you that slight bit of joy or usefulness like a keyboard you’ll use for a significant part of your day then there’s *nothing* wrong with investing in yourself!

Amen. I'm a cheapskate but I recognise that in many cases "you get what you pay for". The good thing about high quality products is that a second hand item is likely to be more reliable/functional than a new cheap one.

I agree completely. I buy the cheapest that I can get on a lot of my groceries and whatnot, but for the things that really bring me joy I'll spend a lot more. I buy expensive coffee beans from a local coffee roaster because drinking good coffee every day brings me joy, and it's still way cheaper than buying coffee from Starbucks.

one thing that working from home due to COVID taught me is that: yes, it is worth it spending a bit more money in something that is not only comfortable, but pleasant. of course, i would not spend an outrageous amount of money - not only because i disagree with excesses, but because i also don't have that much money to spend - but i will spend a bit more if that means that i am not getting mad at my work/utensils/accessories etc
@TheErador

Totally agree. But ~$100 for keycaps is excessive. I imagine it's because of small production runs but iirc Drop doesn't ship until enough people group buy a thing and then presumably the moulds then exist forevermore so next time it's cheap for the same shapes

If its something you use all the time, or for your job, then its definitely worth it. I do find it amusing that people will obsess about saving on things they use all the time, or its value immediately depreciating, then blow a few thousand on a holiday which is money they will never see again without a second thought. If you want a nice keyboard to use, and you can have one without starving the cat or evicting the kids, then go for it. I must say this keyboard brought back many nostalgic tweaks of 80's office equipment, that was designed for use rather than to "look cool". Your keyboard is very reminiscent of office typewriters or the IBM terminals I used to use when I worked for Ford. Enjoy it! I've often wondered if it was practical to cast your own keycaps, clearly it is. I did 3D print a set for a replica MK14 computer I designed on my Ender 3, the results were OK, functional, but the resolution and the layer lines meant they were not aesthetically attractive. But then I only need to bang in a few hex numbers with it, not type up a thesis on it!

IMO, the two categories of expenditures it is worthwhile to invest large sums of money on getting the best (rather than primarily worrying about cost/value/etc) are 1) things you actually use consistently, especially for long periods of time (bed & mattress, computers and their interfaces, shoes & underwear, and depending on your lifestyle perhaps things like TV/sound & seating, or vehicle interior upgrades, or headphones/etc), and 2) *Experiences*, such as going on holiday someplace you've dreamt of, or seeing a once-in-a-lifetime live performance, or occasionally eating a fine meal from a top chef. Saving and otherwise being careful with other purchases is often what enables us to be able to "splurge" on improving the long-term and short-term quality of our life through premium experiences.

Keyboards used for a significant amount of time each day or week should be comfortable and good. They're like shoes imo, you can get cheap ones that are perfectly fine and serviceable, but you have to be conscious of the disadvantages, which in some use cases can include poor upkeep of your health. Not every expensive keyboard and not every expensive shoe is worth it at all in that sense, some are even outright terrible, just as the cheaper ones. The way you did it, picking out the specific things you like and feel comfortable with, to make something that specifically yours, is the best way to approach something like this. Good on you for knowing what you want and like. It's sad that essential things are often so devalued by stuff like fast fashion and cheap knockoff products, and that important stuff is sometimes considered luxury. In a just world everyone would be able to get something like this, and it wouldn't be looked down upon as wasteful, or looked up to as decadent luxury.

Having a comfortable tool is important for continued use. If you're a mechanic, having the "right" wrenches make a difference. You definitely don't *have* to spend top-dollar; buying good used or patiently awaiting a "better" price are always options. Customizing to suit is usually less expensive than ordering bespoke. re: Cable channel - I'd cut/rout an exit at a convenient spot... or maybe use Sugru to mold a retaining clip right in the center. Awww, you've become one of us! And, you've done a great deal of research! The keycap with square bits looks absolutely adorable and fits the calculator fairly well. My vote goes for it to stay! A special keycap is one of the things that makes a custom keyboard a custom keyboard. Especially one that you've made yourself! About the question, last year I built myself a fairly expensive keyboard. At first, I could only think, "this is just too expensive, why did I do this", but as time went on I came to appreciate how comfortable it is. Now, a year later, I would say that the price is completely justified. Happy typing!

I like the clear resin keycap with the chips in it - it has a very unique style. Using that technique, you could make a glitter keycap, or one with any small objects that are small enough and would survive the casting process - perhaps very small screws, bits of metal, snippets of fishing line, scraps of printed paper, or whatnot. While I am not as picky about keyboards, I am thankful that those who are produce videos that will help me pick a better one in the future. We are living in an age where the equipment we use is not so much being significantly upgraded, rather it is being refined in purpose, to make everyday tasks better. Cheers!

I have been flirty with cheap mechanical keyboards for years. I recently found an old massdrop hotswap keyboard to tinker with for around 45 pounds. I purchase another 20 pound lubing station and opened every switch and lubed and filmed them. I then added foam all in the interior of the case which was free. I know you mentioned here that you are not worried about any ping or noise but the elegant feel of and typing experience is really elevated once you have lubed a switch. I am currently taking a certificate program online so I have tons of listening time in the day to do monotonous tasks. It was a funny experience doing something sooo incredibly time consuming for something most people would consider absolutely pointless. I found the experience very relaxing and the end result was so rewarding. I think you have a good base here and lubing the switches really could take it to the next level. All the best shrimp

"If you want to skip all this waffle" Now why would I want to do that? Part of the reason why I watch your videos (apart from the exceptionally brilliant content of course) is that I find your voice really pleasant to listen to. You could also read out the phone book of Brunswick, Tyne and Wear, and I would listen. :D EDITED to add: I just recently aquired a new keyboard myself and I know your pain. It's surprisingly hard to find a keyboard that suits to your every need. I need a German QWERTZ layout (I just can't warm up to the idea of having the y key in place of the z key, even when typing English), and the special symbols on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 keys are: !, ", §, $, %, so that's already different to most other keyboard layouts. Also, a two rows big return key is an absolute must have for me as well. But I don't want to have a mechanical keyboard as they are just so damn noisy while typing. I prefer a flat membrane keyboard any time of the day. That being said: I would LOVE to have a modern keyboard that looks and feels like the old Amiga 500 keyboard. That's actullay surprisingly pleasant to type on, even though the "key press travel distance" is quite large compared to the keyboards I usually prefer. I ended up buying the Cherry Stream Keyboard and am really pleased with it so far (after 3 days of using it).

I completely agree it IS worth it to spend a good amount more for something you interact with regularly. I've "justified" spending more than a bit more for higher trim levels in cars over the past 2 decades because when I do drive (not that much in the last 18 months) I tend to spend hours in the driver's seat and having things such as Satellite Radio (don't know if you have that over there in the UK) - heated seats, etc. makes the long journeys much more bearable. On a per-mile basis the added expense doesn't amount to that much more. P.S. I love the custom key caps - what a great project! Thanks for sharing - I too would be a bit concerned about a white powdery substance arriving via the post.

Strange, I spend all day at work on my keyboard, and I’d never thought about the look or feel of my keyboard. I just know I didn’t want one of those split Microsoft keyboards. However, seeing this, I can really appreciate the joy of a “proper” keyboard, and the individuality it brings. I’m not sure I’m in the market for spending £100+ on a keyboard just yet, but next time I need a replacement I will certainly look further than “what is the cheapest”. And I loved the final cap you made, and the whole “casting extra caps” brought back memories of when you made that infinite resolution camera. Happy days.

When i get around to it, which could take years, i'm building a degassing chamber out of an upside down mason jar, and probably some bicycle valves or something of a kind, and a syringe to actually pump the air. Or maybe a peristaltic electric pump. Or maybe a brake bleeder hand pump, i have seen those used too, seem perfect, if a little pricey. Why upside down? Because then i don't need a mechanism to lower a paper-cup of resin or silicone, i can simply stand it on the base and screw the jar on top. I think this might be something you want to build too. I probably wouldn't worry about the scratchiness of the Cherry MX Brown keys that much if i were you. For one, keeb enthusiasts are weird people and are sensitive to things a normal human is not. For other, i know keeb enthusiasts will probably want me skinned for this, but you can just squirt some silicone oil down the stem when the key is pressed down, that will lubricate them. It's not actually a problem at the contact because the liquid gets displaced and enough metal to metal contact forms that the key will register, i actually even find it more reliable than stock. And the film of oil actually prevents abrasion and corrosion. I have two keyboards lubricated this crude way, my Drevo Tyrfing that i'm currently using (red stem), and a genuine Cherry G80-3000 black stem.

I absolutely love the resin scrap key cap--and I think it suits your style a bit. That's the one I would use, but I think you've got 4 winners on that row either way. I'd also agree with you on stepping up the quality and spending more on the things you use often--especially when it comes to items your physically interface with frequently. Cheaper designs typically don't spend much thought to ergonomics. On top of that, I feel a little hit of joy when things work well, and if I'm going to be using something very often, that's just more opportunity for joy (and I think we all need that).

The whole journey to got the items you need, was the exact same for me. Except that I in fact ordered the Keychron K4 to realize the thing you just said - the relocation of keys is a bummer for anyone who want to use different keys. Gladly I could return it. I also got the Ducky Horizon for that exact matter and there are no regrets, fantastic KB.

I agree, Mike. Tools that will be used regularly, especially if used to produce the main source of income, should be of the highest affordable quality. I worded that last part carefully. Quality is not always expensive, and no one should make their children go hungry for a status symbol.

I love this! The DIY keycaps are great. I ended up down the mech rabbit hole last year. I too love a numpad, and for a similar reason- photo editing. My solution was a 65% board (KBD67) in a Tofu case, and a separate KBD Pad mkii 'numpad' that I tuck away to the back of the desk when I'm not using it. I used Zealios V2 switches, beautifully smooth and tactile. I agree about spending more on things that you use a lot. Using a quality mechanical keyboard improves the experience of using a computer, thus improving something I spend a lot of time doing. I feel the ratio of cost to time spent using it balances out.

Oh man, I hope those replaced keycaps find a lovely home. I desperately want to get some of my own, maybe one day I will be back on my feet and have the luxury to do so. Thanks as always for lovely videos, Shrimp. Always a delight to watch and listen to 'em. ^-^ Also, personally I think you should customize the keys as much as is pleasant for you on those buttons, but I know I'd definitely keep the square sorta confetti one for aesthetical differences that allow for better distinguishment between functions.

That looks like a very comfortable keyboard, especially for the fingers. Now you're making me want to find one similar. I'm also a big fan of a complete board with the keypad. It feels awkward, typing numbers at the top instead of the side. But then I was raised on a full keyboard, even at school. My computer class specifically taught how to use the keypad.

I'm a computer scientist so I spend most of my day at a keyboard, and I figured the exact same thing as you in terms of a good keyboard being worth the cost. I think in any trade, once you are doing it enough, and especially if you are doing it for a living, it makes sense to get yourself tools that you enjoy using. Personally I am a fan of really clicky switches, but not a fan of blues (I find them to be very scratchy). My keyboard is a hotswappable Idobo ortholinear 75 key with a custom key layout, kailh box white switches and a combination of two different lines of DSA keycaps from pimp my keyboard. Always great to see how personal ppl make their keyboards and I really liked the resin cap with the little squares in it!

I've been wondering about the whole build-your-own-keyboard hobby for a while, this was a great introduction! Really interesting. It's a bit weird (but should be expected haha) to learn how different everyone's preferences. While I don't know much about keyboards, I'm firmly set on small flat keys, something similar to Mac keyboards usually. Something about them just makes the process of writing (I write a lot) way easier. But I see big curved keys also have a big following. So interesting.

I made a similar choice a few months ago to get a nice mechanical keyboard on sale. The numbers wore out on my old cheapo keyboard with non replaceable keycaps and I was sick of basically performing mechanical surgery every time I needed to clear out some dust and crumbs. The open bottom you passed over is exactly what I like about mine for this reason

I respect the patience that you had to wait to find these rather obscure items on sale. I am not so patient, and as soon as I decided what I wanted, I would have purchased it. Thankfully, I very rarely find things that I want like that.

I really like what you have done there, and I am now very tempted to look out for a similar sort of thing. I do find that MX browns feel much nicer to my fingers than MX reds, so I sympathise with you there. I personally liked the idea of the multi-coloured calculator button, but find that distracting in practice. Certainly food for thought and thank you for the interesting video. I share many of your preferences when it comes to keyboards it seems.

I am a firm believer in the notion that tools you are going to use every day, whether a bike or a hammer or a keyboard, are well worth a lot of extra investment. If you're going to sit at your desk for even an hour a day, it won't take long before the cost per hour is reduced to pennies. But the benefits of better enjoying what you do every day, and having a smile on your face while doing it, are priceless.

Nice job on the key caps. You might consider using a massage vibrator under the mold to vibrate the air bubbles out. You can cast small plugs of opaque colors to pop into the LED holes to reduce the brightness, or just put opaque tape over them.

I bought a Logitech MX keyboard because the previous mechanic one was so loud people in calls were annoyed by it 😅 I don't think €100 is too much for a tool that you use every day for a couple of years. It really gives me joy every day.

Yes it is definitely worth spending extra for comfort in a device you use a lot. Keyboards are very individual items but few people care much about the style or size of them, even fewer consider it's ergonomics. My personal preference is a small keyboard without number pad or surplus keys which I can use single handed because I don't use a desk and my keyboard is on my lap. I would choose a full sized one to use at a desk and it would then need to be more ergonomic too but for use on my lap I prefer it to be small, slim and light.

When I bought my first mechanical keyboard I was in a similar predicament as you, in that I wanted an Italian layout keyboard. Back then the only option, I think, were Filcos, which I couldn't afford, so in the end I had to go with a Das Keyboard with German layout. At least it gave me a compelling reason to learn touch typing. Completely with you on the full size matter, I tried a tenkeyless board once but the numpad is still where it's at if you need to type in numbers.

I bought a 60% Ducky One2 for my writing laptop and was surprised how much I loved it. It wasn't my first mechanical keyboard, but it was definitely the first that felt the way the Internet talks about them. I would have liked to get a full size one for my office, but finding their products to purchase can be quite difficult! I'm dipping my toes in the custom keycaps side of things but its pretty cost prohibitive and a lot of group buys have been delayed upwards of a year or more due to supply chain issues.

My first mech was a Ducky One2 SF, 65%, and it was pretty nice. Until you start comparing it to others. One of my daily drivers now is a Leopold FC980 PD. About the same price as Ducky's, these Leopold boards blow them out of the water. Keycaps especially are night and day. And they at least have the brains to mount their switches the proper direction - south facing.

Nice choice, I've got the ducky 65% (one SF white brown cherrys), it seemed rather extravagant at first but is a joy to type on and I find the smaller keyboard works great as it has 3 layers of functions but understand why you choose the full size. I upgraded from a cheaper CoolerMaster one (Cherry MX blues) and the Ducky is far nicer. Really like you key cap choice, it looks great and would not have though to cast key caps but they turned out great - I think the fordite one for the calculator looks perfect with the other three - but it's you who will be looking at it all day! thanks for sharing,

As a writer who spends 8+ hours a day at my keyboard, I absolutely agree that a few extra dollars on interface are worth it. My vision isn't the best (near sighted, sensitive to bright lights), so a BIG (32") screen that has good color reproduction even at low brightness (I set mine to 30%) is a must. As for keyboards, I use a Corsair K57. It's a membrane keyboard (something I prefer) with an extra column of keys on the left of the board (I use it for punctuation that a normal keyboard doesn't have), as well as every single key being programmable. The added bonus is both proprietary wireless and bluetooth support (so I can write on my phone or tablet if something is wrong with my PC). The downside (and it's a big one) is that it only has Windows software. That said, I purchased a backup keyboard (once I realized this felt good and ticked all the boxes), because I'd rather spend a little more than suffer the inconvenience of not having *_the right_* keyboard available when I need it (which is every day).
