Sir i want to know why brittle materials fails just by breaking of bond? Why brittle materials dont undergo slip phenomena in plastic deformation zone like ductile material? I mean what makes brittle materials brittle in nature?
A material can fail across a plane either by slip along the plane (ductile) or fracture along the plane (brittle). Both require a critical value of stress; critical shear stress for slip and critical tensile stress for fracture. So it depends on the nature of applied stress which critical value is reached first. Ductile material usually has a much lower value of critical shear stress than critical tensile stress. Thus it is more probable that it will slip than fracture. The reverse is the case for brittle material.
