Dude Ranch is SO Good. its a solid pop punk rock classic. Very excited for ur review of +44. No one has really done it and someone needs to appreciate the genius that is WYHSB (chapter 13 wink)
For me, this album only gets better with age. The poor mix adds to the charm of it. Several songs without a chorus is classic pop punk, fast groovs, good riffs, Mark and Tom's vocals sound great. There is nothing i dislike about this album. I can listen to it from start to finish and enjoy it.
If he thought Dude Ranch mix was bad, I can't imagine what he's going to think of the Cheshire Cat mix. That album sounded like a demo, but I loved it.
i love this album so damn much! the raw sound and just overall melodies are so good! i most of the times rather listen to this then for example enema of the state, because its just so damn raw!
I'd never ever say that Scott is better than Travis lol BUT Dude Ranch is my favorite blink album. I love the (sometimes random) song structuring, and that Mark and Tom both had such distinctive vocals from one song to the next. I wish I could hear this album with Travis on drums and Jerry Finn producing, but obviously that's impossible. This era of blink was super creative and they were playing around with their sound so much. I love their entire catalogue of music, but this album always gets me. Favorite songs are Waggy, Enthused, Emo and Lemmings.
This was the first album I ever heard from blink. In 11th grade After soccer practice in 1998 my friend Tres let me hear dammit and I fell in love instantly. Toms voice stuck out so much. I was instantly a fan. I went to Hot topic shortly after and bought it and listened to it everyday of 12th grade. Shortly after graduation enema of the state came out. To me it sounded so different as it was so polished.
Awesome man! Yeah I can totally get that you thought it was too polished. With Jerrys Production it went from Punk to Pop-Punk I think. That's a big part of why they were that popular! And yeah I always loved Toms voice too!
This is my baseline for what the "blink sound" is. The songs being not quality recordings are part of why I love this album so much. Whole album is great imo.
I love Dude Ranch. I didn't get it when I came from their mainstream hits to this, which was the first album I purchased myself. But man, does this album grow on you. And I agree: some of the best aspects of this album are the rawness, and the emphasis on Tom's guitar. Easily the most punk Blink have ever sounded to this day.
I became a Blink fan with Enema of the State back then so I discovered their earlier stuff much later but "Dammit" and "Apple Shampoo" from Dude Ranch are pure gold! Such awesome songs - no wonder they still play Dammit live in 2023.
The Marc Tom and Travis show was really surprising at this time, all of us were on the tour and literally we come home and then we get this album … really hard years 99/2000 …
I’ve always really liked take off your pants. Good stuff throughout the album. Honestly, Blink got much sharper after Dude Ranch. Travis really brought Blink to a new level.
honestly I love this album, I actually appreciate how raw it sounds. And also love to play it a lot (I play guitar) is like too much fun, get your point on production, but still think this songs are way too good, I think my fav. one from the album is enthused, but also like untitled and boring a lot. My blink 182 albums top: 1. Untitled/Enema 2. TOYPAJ/OMT 3. Dude Ranch/Neighborhoods/DED 4. Chesire Cat And don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater, but all they did with Skiba is not blink, so I won't talk about them... even so those two albums can't beat none of the ones above
Of The State 4 untitled 5 Cheshire Cat 6 One More Time 7 California (double cd deluxe) 8 Nine 9 Neighborhoods (deluxe)
My fav songs from this album: Enthused, I'm sorry, Apple Shampoo, Untitled, Boring. I'm also a non-native English speaker. Actually, these songs helped me practice the language 😂 I wish I could be so sensitive to the "out of time" drum-track parts. I couldn't notice, even after your advise.
Hahaha :D No worries, man! I'm a drummer, so I always catch that kind of stuff 😂 But when I'm just chilling and listening to Dude Ranch, I'm not thinking, "Wow, these drums are way off." I just enjoy the vibe then. It's the same deal with early Offspring tunes-the drums might be a bit wonky, maybe even worse than Dude Ranch, haha. But I absolutely LOVE "Ignition" and "Smash" by Offspring. It's got to have those raw drums and guitar tones; that's part of its charm. I mean, at the end of the day, it's all art, and you can be into anything, even if it's not perfectly produced or flawlessly played. Look at where we are today-everything in music production these days is edited to be spot-on in time and pitch, but it's missing some realness. AI might not have a problem churning out those polished tracks, but it'll be a challenge for AI to create songs with genuine feeling that's a bit off in timing, but that's what makes it cool!
Yeah it’s the nostalgia, especially when you listened to it in the late 90s. I discovered it after I’ve known all the Jerry Finn albums for years. It’s kinda hard to go back 😅 but I really love some songs!! And for the punk feel you kinda need that crappy sound. Crappy punk rock since 92!!
