Ehhhhh!!! Wrong again!!! Mitchel was only a threat from the left corner last year (opposite to Kyle Filipowski who was better from the R corner than the left). IF you want to even call it a threat…. I dunno…. Do you really call shooting 57% from the left corner a threat when you only made 12 of them all year??? On the right wing he shot 22% going 7/32. This year we hope he can sustain and even shoot better than 35% on a higher volume. This scrimmage is just one piece of positive evidence it will happen.

That there was only one corner he was shooting from? 😂 Even more of a reason why making outside shots in different areas can create more space and open up his game so much more. Apologies for being a little optimistic and expecting a jump from a talented player in his second year in the program.

This team is so stacked from top to bottom would love to see them build that type of chemistry that the 2015 team had even though there was mostly freshmen I think with the guys that came back this year i feel like 2024 Duke will be NCAA champions again! #brotherhood. #bannerchaser
Well it actually was a decent mix in 2015. You of course had the 4 freshmen in Okafor, Jones,Winslow and Allen(who didn't play as much as the other 3 throughout the year but had his moments and definitely was huge in the national championship game) and then you had Seniors Quinn Cook and Sean Kelly with Juniors Marshall Plumlee and Amile Jefferson(who just left Duke staff to join Boston Celtics coaching staff) and then you had sophomore Matt Jones and Semi Ojeleye. So a very good mix of experience and all those guys contributed to Duke winning the national championship that season. Which hopefully you are right and this team can gel the way that team did because this team also has Seniors, juniors,sophomores with good experience to mix in with an incredibly talented freshman class. This should be a fun season and this team should have a chance at collecting #6. Let's Go Duke!!!
It’s probably gonna be Proctor, Roach, Mitchell, Flip, Young. But if they play a guard heavy team like Miami then they’ll probably do Proctor, Roach, McCain, Mitchell, Flip like you said.

Coach says this year's team wants to run and play in the first 9 seconds of the shot clock. I can't wait to see this team getting up and down the court. If these guys can play as a team, then this is gonna be a fun basketball season. I think they will play as a team and I also believe that this team is filled with guys that just really love to play the game which of course makes it that much more special. I agree, unfortunately I think Schutt will once again be sitting on the bench. He definitely looked good in video and I've heard and read a lot of good things about him and making a big jump, but Duke brought in such a great talented class that, in my opinion he is behind all of them. McCain, Powers,Foster,Stewart, I mean who does Schutt play in front of in that group? I'm glad Schutt stayed and I really hope he gets minutes and has a role on the court this season, I also admire that he stayed and didn't run to another school just because he knew he would get a lot more playing time somewhere else. I hope I'm wrong and he has a role on the court for this team, I'm not used to guys transferring away from Duke basketball and there has been a decent amount in the last few years and I don't like it. It's gonna start making it harder to get guys like Schutt to come to Duke if they're not playing and those are the glue guys on the National Championship teams. Schutt at other ACC schools would be a full-time starter no doubt but he came to the mecca of college hoops. Hopefully Schutt has stepped his game up(looks like he has from videos I've seen) and Coach Sheyer will find him a place to flourish. Having to much talent is a good problem to have though
@timboslice8559 he's gotta play defense if he wants to be on the court. Last year he was a huge defensive liability and I don't know if that has or has not changed. This team is stacked deep and I see Shutt toward the back of the pack. I absolutely hope that he gets playing time and contributes much more than just a practice body. I definitely think the kid can shoot and he has looked much improved at driving to the basket, I've seen just about everyone score on him in practice without him doing much to try and stop them. Personally I think how he plays defense is the key to how much playing time Shutt sees this season. Of course like all the Blue Devils I wish him the absolute best!!!
Love seeing a young hooper like Proctor make plays like that. Man he so young too! Love seeing these fellas prosper. Want to see more out of Jared solely because of how good he did last scrimmage. Love this man. Young buckets out here!
I am a Dukie, let me say that first. I love this team like I did the 2015 championship team and actually think this team is better because they are deeper and have better shooting. The blend of young and old without having to depend on the 1 and done will be refreshing as a college basketball fan. Coach Scheyer is set up this program for a hell of a year two. Buckle Up!!!
On paper I say you're 100% correct. Now all they have to do is be able to play together as well as that 2015 team did. 2015 really played team basketball and I hope these guys do as well. Like you I believe this is a deeper more talented team than that in 2015, with no disrespect to Tyus Jones, jahlil Okafor, Justice Winslow, Grayson Allen, Matt Jones, Semi Ojeleye, Marshall Plumlee, Amile Jefferson, Quinn Cook, Sean Kelly or Mr. Nick Pagliuca. Completely agree this will be the best Duke team since 2015. One thing is they don’t have a dominant player but they have quite a few ballers that can play. Difference will be the bench. Bringing in Foster and Stewart off the bench is kinda unfair
The returning players gonna all be averaging double digits this season with 3 to 4 players off the bench contributing the same.The talent is crazy this year and I thought the team with zion, rj, and cam was special but couldnt get on the right page at times inconsistency but shoot this team this year going all the way!!! Their energy just different this year
The interesting thing about Zion, Barrett, and Cam's team was they peeked the first game against Kentucky. They won by 30 points and where else did they have to go? They just played to finish college and go to the NBA. Then Zion got injured and the team lost chemistry. Cam, i believe, didn't know how to play in the shadows of Zion and Barrett. Cam was better than he realized.
I agree, The freshmen seem stronger this year and more ready for college than the team last year, you combine that with the strength that the older players added and this team is one of the most talented top to bottom in a very long time!
I was hoping to see more rim protection from Reeves, doesn't seem like anyone on the team is afraid of going right at him and scoring over him. He does look bigger,stronger and better all the way around. It could just be that he just doesn't necessarily go all out against his teammates trying to block every shot. Wishing great things for Reeves all all the guys this season. Let's Go Duke
I love Mitchell and think he will play a huge part in Duke success this year but if he was going to be the one to carry Duke this season than I would hate to see the type of season they would end up having lol Mitchell needs to be our bully and do the dirty work this year
Key Overreactions from this 5v5 Scrimmage: 1) We have a serious weakness defensively in the front court. This film is an indictment of Christian Reeves. Mark Mitchell had his way getting to the rim and there was no one to protect it. If Kyle gets into foul trouble, whose going to protect the paint??? If I am Arizona, UNC, Michigan State, Baylor, etc I am attacking the paint!!!! I said it during the off-season, Jon Scheyer costed himself/Duke a Title by failing to bring Udeh in as a transfer. No team of the last 21 NCAA title winners had a defense outside the top 22 and more than half of those teams had a top 10 defense. Duke should have a top offense this year, but I’m far from convinced they will have a top defense. 2) Jaden Schutt is going to work his way into the rotation. Everyone is talking about Schutt being a transfer concern next season. And that could remain a valid concern after the season, but I think he’s going to be one of the first guys off the bench. When Mark is not playing the 3, expect Schutt to be a great option here. 3) Jared McCain showing more consistency than Foster. We have seen flashes of both, but McCain appears to be more consistent. Pre-summer I said McCain is really going to challenge Roach for minutes and I think that trend is going to continue. He’s also proving he may be the best option at PG when Proctor isn’t on the floor. 4) Mark Mitchell looks locked in. He made it look so easy!!!! 😂😂😂. But let’s keep things into perspective. There was nobody to really challenge him defensively. However, he does look comfortable at the 4. I predicted he would be, but this is still a good sign.
Scheyer didn't fail to get udeh. Admissions shut it down. They have a little bit of a weakness defensively down low, but ideally we run other teams out of the gym and make opposing teams have to play small in order to try and run and guard our bigs on the perimeter. Reeves needs some work but he will be fine. He's huge. All he has to do is stand there and his size alone will add some protection.

You honestly believe he wouldn’t perform well in the classroom at Kansas whose academics have been compared to community colleges??? Fair or not these criticisms are real. Not only that, but you can’t transfer ANYWHERE if you don’t keep satisfying curricular demands throughout the year. But most importantly he was taking classes as a freshman…. This means he only needs to catch up on general classes. First year class transfers are not complicated…. Udeh’s decision came down to PT. Just like the other transfers we lost out on. Scheyer stated this in one of the interviews he had. He wanted his guys to see the light at the end of the tunnel, namely guys like Stewart. But how does this make any sense to lose out on Udeh for this year when you recruit top level guys like Flory (and all this rumor and chatter about Flagg coming in 24) who will take his minutes anyway??? Jon shot himself in the foot this year. About small ball. It only works until it doesn’t. Teams don’t have to play small ball if they have position-less defenders. Or guys that have length or athleticism that can guard anywhere. Does Tennessee ring a bell??? You are assuming Kyle will shoot better than the 28% from the perimeter he shot last year. If he doesn’t, teams will be begging him to shoot. Now I think he will be better given he has had to rest the entire off-season - meaning he could only practice shooting for months!!! But he never got to practice better ball handling skills this off-season which was an enormous weakness. I couldn’t tell you if he had more offensive fouls from reckless charge calls or defensive calls last year. But I can tell you he lead the team in turnovers. I could delve deeper into 3 guard lineups but I’m not going to waste my breath on this one. All you should be worried about is Duke being a Top 11 defense based on historical data. Last year we were 16 and Lively is no longer on the team. Remember when we went to the Final 4 with Banchero??? We had the best offense in the country but our defense was ranked 49th. The teams that win titles are highly competitive on both ends. Running teams out of the court may work in November and December, but let’s not be so myopic and worry about March and April.
Hey I just wrote an essay debating you on another video and here I am about to agree with 100% of this one: #1--majory concern. We had a lengthy debate awhile back about Reeves and I take zero pleasure in appearing correct about this... Young made him look slow and Young shouldn't do that to anyone and Mitchell shouldn't be finishing over him with such ease. I think the key to beating Duke is to attack the paint for 40 mins... if Kyle is in there, might pick up some fouls on him. If not, there's nobody to protect the rim--I'm thinking more zone than we'd like to see. Dare people to shoot and rely on a fast paced offense to do the job--not ideal. I also think this means a heavy dose of Kyle to start games off--they need him going at guys like Bacot off the bat in an attempt to get them in foul trouble first. As for Udeh, I don't know the details but it's a shame they didn't get any of the rim protecting bigs. #2--Schuttt is looking really good out there--it'll come down to his defense and possibly Power (in a negative way)... still tough to find minutes but it's looking much more promising than before. His biggest hurdle will be defensively as you've already mentioned as a concern--this is where Foster takes away minutes that could've been Schutt's. #3--I definitely prefer McCain over Roach at PG when Proctor is out and I don't see Jeremy getting 33 mins per game again this season... either a 3 guard lineup with Mitchell and Flip or he's the first off the bench bringing Stewart in for more size and better help in the paint. #4--yes he's looked focused and has played really well... but he's primarily eating up guards in nearly all of the scrimmages!!!

You could be right on Reeves but it’s still early. He had to recover from a left ankle arthroscopy so he didn’t have an entire offseason these other guys have had. But for me, Shedrick doesn’t necessarily move the needle that Udeh could. Udeh left for PT. I’ve already answered this. Yes, Mitchell was mostly going up against Blake’s, which says more about who Blakes is as a defender. But I also pumped the breaks in my original post. His inside-out play looked promising. I’m pumping the breaks on Foster as a good defender. He wasn’t great in HS and I’m seeing the same tendencies in these scrimmages just as I have from Jeremy Roach. We’ve talked extensively about 3 guard lineups so I think you know where I stand on that. But Schutt at the 3 isn’t as big as a liability as it would be at the 2. Guys who play the 2 are too athletic for him to guard. Guys at the 3 will be manageable. I’m with you about Power that would be the best case scenario for this team but he’s not proving he’s ready yet. From what I’m witnessing I think Schutt is going to work his way in the lineup more than Power will.
Has nothing to do with Mark either. If you watch the tape, Mark is playing the 4. Power is playing the 3. And although Mark looks really good, he’s not going against strong bigs whatsoever. This tape is more of an indictment on Reeves as a defender than Mark’s offense (which looks really good!) which is a major concern for this team getting to the Final 4. Mark was being guarded by Jalen Blakes who plays the 1 and 2. I thought Power was going to be a great guy to play the 3 given his size (he’s like a Mike Dunleavy comp) when Mark is playing the 4, but more and more I am convinced the minutes will be given to Jaden Schutt who has had a great off-season.

Alright….. I just realized filipkowski isn’t even out there! This team is really good and few things stood out to me! Poor Jaylen Blake’s has NO SHOT at minutes.. Jeremy roach’s role won’t be as big as we think and duke will win the championship! Other than no certified rim protector I don’t see how they don’t, this roster is insane and nothing like the top heavy ones that should’ve still won championships 😡
Jeremy Roach’s role wasn’t all that big towards the end of the season, like yes he scored a lot but I mean like he didn’t have the ball in his hands as much as the beginning of the season. Reason for that is bc Proctor got more confident and took on the PG role while Roach was out and it carried onto when he came back. And I think Reeves can become a great shot blocker if given the proper coaching. In the few possessions that he played against Edey, Edey didn’t do anything but pass it out bc he couldn’t move Reeves like he did Lively. Sean Stewart also looks like he can be a good shot blocker for a small ball lineup
