Watch this video to learn more about the beautiful region of Scotland called Dumfries & Galloway, a fascinating area of Scotland that many people know little about.
This is where famous Outlander actor Sam Heughan was born, but was also home to many other famous people and famous historical moments.
It's also a wonderful area to visit for leisure and culture, with so much to see and do!

Hello from the states, I was going through a family book from my fathers side of the family and have come to know that our ancestors resided in The Glenkens in the north of the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright. The book traced back to the 1700s with the names of McClamroch, McLandsborough and Landsborough. Some of the pages referenced in our family book was from "Our Galloway Ancestors " by John McLandsborough, retired Civil Engineer, Manningham, Bradford, Yorkshire, May of 1898. Scotland is beautiful! Thank you for sharing information, so interesting!!

I've been watching quite a few RU-vid videos in anticipation of a visit to the region with my wife this summer, and this was hands-down the best. Gordon, Thank you for so very much for your very simple and informative videos about your homeland. This episode was of particular interest because at 60 years of age I just found out my people came From kircudbrightshire and if understand correctly were of the loosely formed lowlands Heron “clan” as they were part the infamous border reviers. I can’t wait to visit all of Scotland especially that area although I don’t expect to find out much family history there as some left for Germany after culloden and later for America during the clearings. Sincerest thanks. Michael Herren

I have just discovered my Scottish heritage this year via ancestry.com thru my father’s side, Johnston(e). I hope to discover it as well as what my great aunt on my mother’s side discovered: she traced our family’s ancestry back to before William the Conqueror to B.C. times. Someday, I wish to visit Scotland, as well as the U.K., to see where my ancestors lived.

Hi Katie. I have lots of books on the floor, I need to get a bigger bookcase! Johnstone is a very well known name in Scotland, especially in the Borders from whence they originated. They were a very powerful clan, but often at odds with their neighbours, in particular the Moffats. (this was not unusual amongst Scottish clans, in fact it was the norm!). Their lands were in Annandale which is a lovely part of the Scottish Lowlands. You should try and come to Scotland and visit Annandale, I'm sure you would love it. The town of Moffat is very nice. Kind regards. Gordon

My maiden name is Bell and my Great Great Grandfather, John Bell emigrated to Philadelphia from Paisley in 1859, but I believe further back we were Border Revievers who became part of The Plantation to Ulster, as he was born in Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland in 1841, but around 1853, he moved back to Paisley because he had family there, learned his trade there. Also, when you spoke of Dark Sky parks, we have one in Pennsylvania, it is Cherry Springs Park in north Central Pennsylvania and it is the darkest sky in the US I believe. They have viewing grounds and small observatories and people come from all over the World to star gaze and photograph. Look it up on Wikipedia. Thank you for your lovely talk.

Interesting there is a New Annan in Nova-Scotia where McLellan's settled in the 1700's. From family history I read that McLellan's had to pay a penalty to the Douglas Clann?? I am not sure if this was an English thing. Great video.
@gordonsscotland8441

The Douglas family were the predominant clan in that part of Scotland, James, so I am sure quite a number of families would have had to pay them some form of penalty. Kind regards, Gordon

I lived in Moniaive, Dumfries and High Tae near Lochmaben. I lived there in the mid to late sixties. In those days Dumfries was a very attractive market and tourist town which also featured lots of light industry. On my last visit to Dumfries, I was very disappointed, most of the shops were closed, the light industry was gone. If a shop wasn't closed, it was a pound shop or a charity shop. A very sad and disappointing transformation.

I've been pulling clues from your talks re: Peter Martin of 1749 Founding of Halifax Nova Scotia rumored to be from Galway. However descendant Y-DNA results show closest matches to Maxwell then Ramsay of Galloway. Found a parish lists on D & G Family history of Martiins although no searches online so far have found a Peter...its just a gut hunch

Hi Gordon...Really enjoyed your video; my first step in getting some historical background on Dumfries. My burning question is: what were the conditions in that beautiful part of Scotland that would drive my great grandfather and his two brothers to set sail for New Zealand in 1860? .Besides gold!! Perhaps you could point to some of the best sources for that kind of information? I understand now the love of the coastland that has been inter-generational and easily transferable from Dumfries (where I've yet to visit) to NZ....thanks so much from Janice, NZ
@gordonsscotland8441
@gordonsscotland8441 2 года назад
Dear Janice Glad you enjoyed the video. I suspect the main reason for your family emigrating from Dumfries would be economic. This was then (and still is now!) the main driver for people wishing to leave Scotland - they want a better life for themselves and their families. The population of Scotland was growing rapidly in the 19th century, from 1,608,000 in the census of 1801 to 2,889,000 in 1851. However, even with the development of industry, there were insufficient good jobs to be had. In addition, due to the Irish potato famine of 1845-49 it is estimated over 100,000 Irish people arrived in Scotland looking for work. So, whilst as you said Dumfriesshire is a beautiful part of our country, there’s a well known saying...’you can’t eat the scenery!’. Over two million Scots left their homeland in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the overwhelming majority of them did so for a better life. However, in addition to economic problems, Scotland in the 1800s was experiencing considerable social unrest. The American and French revolutions had raised the notion of democracy, and political movements called ‘Radicals’ had sprung up demanding reform. Troops returning home in their thousands at the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 quickly became disillusioned by the lack of work and poor conditions at home, and there was a growing sense of discontent in Scotland. Following the Peterloo Massacre in 1819, when troops and yeomanry charged unarmed protesters in Manchester, a former soldier, John Baird from Dunbartonshire, formed a group called the ‘Condorrat Radicals’, who were demanding universal franchise and other political reforms. The entire 28-man committee of his group were arrested and in protest, 60,000 Scottish workers went on strike. Baird, who had been released, then led a small group of men on a march to the Carron Ironworks near Falkirk, the main manufacturer of armaments, in an attempt to obtain weapons. They were attacked by the Stirlingshire Yeomanry and surrendered. There were further riots in other areas of Scotland when crowds tried to free radicals who had been arrested. Subsequently the imprisoned radicals were tried for treason, with Baird and his close friend Andrew Hardie being executed and twenty others deported to penal colonies. The aftermath of this whole period led, however, to the 1832 Reform Act which started the process of extending the democratic franchise. Unrest continued, however, throughout the century with continued demands for universal suffrage, but it took two further Reform Acts (1867 and 1884) to establish this, and then only for men. So, Scotland was in a bit of turmoil both economically and socially, and these factors may have played a part in the decision of your relatives to head to New Zealand. Kind regards from Scotland to you and your family. Gordon PS Try to come and visit sometime!
