You arrived in New Zealand with an engine that wouldn't start, and now you leave with one that won't stop. Honestly, we couldn't make this up.

The problem is that a diesel can go into self combustion mode where they essentially burn their own oil. Bukhs are incredibly good at keeping running. Not so good at stopping.

Dear wind hippy, I have a 14 year old daughter that has almost fallen in love with sailing. We watch all you videos together. The other night we anchored by a beach and the weather report was wrong as per usual. We woke to 16 knot wind gusting to 25. Dragging anchor towards shore. We have a 1982 Catalina 30. She took the helm and kept us into the wind as I pulled up the anchor. It was a hairy situation... 5' plus swells 75 yards from shore. If there is any way you could give a shout out to Robin Dell it would definitely help set the hook for a lifetime of freedom for her. Thank you .

Mixing 2-stroke fuel, the trick is to work out the correct dose for your can - usually 5litres - then dose the can and fill it at the pump. Job done!

Go to an auto parts shop and buy a small tube of battery pole grease. I noticed that your connectors on your switch were getting green. Clean them a bit with fine sand paper and thinly smear the battery grease. This will stop the corrosion and potential problems. Corroding joiners and plugs gave me problems on my yacht and this fixed it.

My Bukh dv8 would not stop, and also had no charging when harbouring at 3 am back in 2015. Did crack the injector nut open, and it sprayed diesel mist all over the engine compartment. Damn engine rattles all electrics like a disco freak. Makes a good anchor.

@berserkerbdog
@berserkerbdog Год назад
@@saylaveenadmearedeadyou are required by the Coast Guard to have a manual pump and bailer (bucket). Electric pumps are secondary and NOT required.
@kingscairn
@kingscairn Год назад
I had a hand bilge pump on my 1967 Bristol Yacht B-27 ( Carl Alberg design, built in the old Herschoff Yard in Rhode Island ) - worked wonderfully - but I also got 2 12v electric pumps as backup ( redundencies ) 1 was a 5000 gal pr hour monster - luckily, I never had to use any of them and my bilge was as dry as Billy's Bones
@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
@@kingscairn Redundancy is key. Imagine being asleep for a few hours and for some reason your bilge alarm fails and you wake up and the boat is half way sunk. No amount of manual bailing will help in that situation.

Every seasoned sailor knows the fastest way to make an engine stop is to motor w/o sails thru a riptide channel with lots of hidden bombie rocks. And of course few landlubbers really know the fastest way to make a sailboat go, is to invite the Captain for one night ashore and in the morning they'll cry "Aww Never More."

Finally some proper boat improvement content on this website! That decking is common in NZ. It's "kwila" it's from south east asia. I consider it "poor (wo)man's teak" pretty much perfect for the job. It's the best wood for boat stuff like this that's available at an ordinary hardware store.

Great job Holly. Another emerg shut-down trick is to completely cover the air intake. Starves of air, shuts down instantly. Be careful - use a strong flat square of plywood or similar to cover the intake. Don’t get your hand near the intake, you can lose a digit. Sometimes easier than getting a wrench on the fuel input. As mentioned, if too hot she can continue to run by burning oil; air intake will shut that down. Keep goin 👍

Keep sharing your projects with us. Somehow you are able to keep a positive attitude in the wake of all the work, both planned and unplanned. It's a simple life... until it isn't (like stopping the engine.) But it seems you always have to decide if you are going to execute the complete fix, the correct fix, or go with the stop-gap fix and take care of it later.
@stopthephilosophicalzombie9017
The only problem with solo sailing is that there's so much to do and so little time that you end up doing stop-gap fixes on lots of stuff. Holly seems to be learning when to do the right thing though. That sail was seriously blown out by the time Rolly Tasker came to the rescue.

The solenoid is pulling on a little lever. The STOP lever. Just pull it yourself. Some engines activate the solenoid while it is running, others are activating the solenoid only to stop the engine. In any case there is a lever that you can use yourself.

A frisbee; chrome hub cap; 45 rpm disc (with a nut, bolt and washer in the middle) cake baking tin; or even one of those china plates from the dumpster, all bedded in with Sikaflex or 4200. In the end Holly's solution was the best!

@ 12:30 that's a typical rarely used little diesel engine noise, as it faded away @ 12:48 and engine rev's climbed, it pretty well confirmed a cold engine knock or piston slap in the bore, not something to worry on, You are after all on a budget, Loved following you doing your impression of a Racoon in a wheelie bin, I have sailed (I'm 69yr old Brit)for so long in yachts with the manual pump handle left in by a crew mates, I started to believe crossing a cockpit in the dark,when alcohol had been taken(for medicinal reasons)was akin to suicide, But I have worn belt and braces for some of my life, so a reassuring pump of the handle every watch, awaiting the no resistance pull on the lever, was always a calming effect on ones nerves
