I'm with foodsharing in Germany, we collect food from shops that are willing to give us food instead of throwing it in the bin, especially shops that the foodbanks don't want to cooperate with or at times they don't collect. Often the quality of the things is still very good, or they have to throw out things because the silly best before date is overdue. I'm quite shocked at the amount and the quality of the food seen in the dumpster, this is insane :( . Some of the shops in Germany especially discount grocery stores use locked containers or containers in locked areas to keep dumpster divers out. I like to do it in a legal, consensual way but I think that shops needs to be forced by law to not throw things out of the trash if people can be still be fed by it.

There's a French politician who is right now trying to pass the exact law you ask : a law that would force markets to give to associations asking it food they'ld otherwise throw away.

Same in Bulgaria, you re-market until sh** looks a lot better than what you can buy on the market or store, but they can't give it for free. My wife worked at a large supermarket chain a few years ago - they banned the employees to buy the expired food, just to avoid fraud from employees marking good stuff as scrap and buying it then for cheap :(

I love people pointing out how this is "stealing" while completely missing the point. This is about how fucked up our world is, throwing away 1/3 of the food we produce, while so many people are starving. This is a wake-up call, presented in a fun video. Not a debate to know if it's ok to "steal" food that will be thrown away.

Wish you had elaborated on the "How to" part... people in the market seemed to already know you ..did you go in advance, introduced your projects saying something or just went and asked..can I take all leftovers you are throwing away? that's it? ...just wonder ....some people prefer to throw away rather that create incentive for others to not buy but wait instead for end of market to ask for free stuff, what is your experience asking for this in NL ? most people willing? most not? The supermarket part.. why was it so "secretive" I also live in NL, is it illegal here to go dumpster diving? what kind of place was that? the back part/loading docks of supermarket? were you in risk of getting arrested here in NL?
@Mulletmanalive
@Mulletmanalive 5 лет назад
iwona GomezVelandia Not affiliated with PP but we deal with this sort of thing at work. It’s really easy if you have a charitable status; just provide registration numbers and they’ll usually give you a receipt for abou 10% of the value and call it a donation of that value. The store I work at gives away about 80kg per day. You’ll probably have to sign a waiver that anything they give you is out of its sell by date and is used without their liability. It’s the chance of getting sued that causes the stuff to get thrown away. These guys are a pseudo charity so they might be able to get away with that rather than raiding at night. For smaller places, go and make friends. I would buy from them at least once and give them a gift at Christmas at the very least. Inexpensive liquor with a big bow tied to it is very effective..after that, you need to be there the moment that it’s most convenient to them for you t take their food waste and never complain if it’s mixed together. Nobody likes folks who complain about their favours. Also, not free but cheaper, google your town and look around the industrial areas and around churches. Many cities have one or more places that are already doing this and will hand you stuff for a donation. A place we give to requires a standing order of £10 per week, but you can get a catering bag of frozen chicken as one of the ten items you get from them per week. Hope this helps a little. Oh, and EU environmental codes require food be stored in lockable or at least sealable containers a minimum of 10 yards beyond the building, so if you see a locked container far from the building, get a lock picking gun. Check it for integrity in the bottom corners or you might find something has already gotten to it first, mind.

njabulo mhlongo I don’t think those were meant to go to trash because otherwise they would have put it directly in their trash bin (I’ve been working on a supermarket like this one) I think that those were meant to go to association like “restaurant du cœur” or “croix rouge”. They didn’t know so it is not problematic since in a way or another it goes in the mouth of someone. :)

They legally can't sell it (food safety laws), and may be contractually obligated not to give some items for free (this is called "scan-based trading," where they're only charged for what they sell or give away). How about start your own market and run them out of business? Technically if they bought it, it's their right to do with as they wish.

The food is not free, maybe in money terms, but not in energy terms. Food is a concentration of different kinds of energy for a certain amount of time (time, wich is also energy). Food is food when it still gives the human body energy instead of taking energy from it. Its not the 'best before' stamp, its the bacteria and/or fungi that are slowly eating the energy out of the product so it becomes 'inedible' for humans (food rot). We people need to learn how to manage the energies/foods so that there is enough for every one's body to be sustained. The way we manage it now looks a lot like 'the scorching earth' tactic used by the soviets back in world war 2 (google it). I mean the way we manage the energies in the western society. Its too high of an energy; an extremity. Therefore it is very unstable. Like balancing a dish on a needle. You better balance a dish on a table. For better understanding and learning of this, I would like to redirect to Jesus. He is described in the books of the bible. Like Matthew, Marc, Luke and John.

@brokkoliomg6103
@brokkoliomg6103 5 лет назад
5:00 Did you pack the boxes on the top again? And are there any safety health tips what not to do or take? Like meat, fish or milk products? Or is everything okay that doesn't look too bad...? 7:50 And are there any organizations that take care of that food. I know in Germany there is foodsharing, but don't you kinda compete with these? Like don't you have to ask yourself if maybe other people are coming there to get the leftovers? Don't get me wrong I love that you're doing this I'm just asking myself some questions
@thevi962
@thevi962 5 лет назад
I'd be very careful with fish and meat as that can get pretty dangerous, if it's pre-cooked you're probably safe if you don't wait too long, I wouldn't recommend raw meat though unless it's only a few days overdue, and even then always check to see if there's any sign that it's bad (looks, smell). When milk products go bad, it's usually easy to tell, either it smells bad or you can see mould on it, and even then you'll probably just have a stomachache for a few days or so. I would still only eat those things if they don't look bad at all (unless it's solid cheese, then you can just cut out the parts with the mould). Most other stuff, especially if it contains little to no fluid and/or has a lot of sugar or salt in it, is usually fine if it doesn't look too bad. But that's just my two cents.

Taking from a dumpster not on the curb is probably illegal in US. Stores wouldn’t want to give it to you either for fear of legal liability (though I heard food donations are technically exempt from this, even if true, they might not know and be nervous to do it)
@hed420
@hed420 5 лет назад
If the dumpster is locked or is behind a locked fence then it is illegal to take. Otherwise it's free for the taking. Also you're right about their fear of liability, they don't want to get sued if someone eats something and gets sick so they rather just throw it out.
@MrV902

I work in retail and dumpster divers always piss me off. They frequently break our locks or just rip the lid off then leave trash scattered all around and our dumpster ends up getting filled with old tires and large cardboard boxes so our own trash can't go in. This is why we're required to break up everything that goes in, break the seal on all packaged foods and I've taken to pouring liquids over the whole thing so it reeks when it gets hot in the sun. We used to donate acceptable packaged items after the Sell By date but the charities quit coming around so it's all garbage now.

Most of the food doesn't get expired. They have a best before date. That means that the food may smell or taste a bit worse but it doesn't kill you. Sometimes it doesn't even taste any different. Many of these products with a best before date can also be used for baking without any noticeable differences in taste. Then there are products with an expiration date. Many meat products have it and it usually means that you shouldn't eat it because you might get food poisoning, but at least here in Finland some pre-heated food like meatballs and other convenience foods still have that expiration date even though there isn't really any danger in eating those products even if the expiration date is overdue.

I'm not sure about it's legality, but reading other people's stories about it most policemen don't really care. One guy told how they got caught while doing it and the police just told them to not do it during daytime. The store owners may report it and the policemen have better things to do :D The shopkeepers' reactions differ a lot. One just jokingly asked if they were looking for better discounts and some other shopkeepers are really angry about it. (All of these are from Finland. The reactions might be different in other countries.) In my opinion I don't think it matters too much if it's legal or not. I don't think you could get in too much trouble from this and all of this food would otherwise go to waste.

@@RyszardRudy sorry I read feeding, and that's my fault. then I understand your remark now. As same time my English not good as yours, for that reason I asked you about that word, I looked a little shallow. sorry

I know you guys are super trendy vegans but that ham is a whole lotta protein, not only that its eco intensive protein, wouldnt be right to waste it. The guys at the old arts collective i was in did this all the time. I used to go with them sometimes. If i saw hams like that id have gone a lot more haha.

If you knew how it was produced you might think about more than just the protein. The mushrooms have ample protein anyway

i know how it produced. I have no issues eating animals if thats what you mean. And most agaricus mushrooms are sprayed with formalin and ther nasty stuff so i stay away from them. I used to have a gourmet mushroom farm. Honestly i dont think ill ever remove meat from my diet. Plant protein just isnt the same.

that is one totally legit way to see it. But then again, it's of no value for the company anymore. The problem is more with "making it hard to get to the goods" and a missing proper way to get to it. Actually making the hurdle lower would solve problems. As long as everyone is aware of the fact that the food is "spoiled" in terms of the printed "best before" date. And that is a "best before" date only, in many cases

If there are in a dumpster, it's waste, it's no a product of a company anymore. There aren't in the market. If something happens to you for taking it, it's your responsibility.
