The TV cut was released on DVD. It also aired during the first season of "Twin Peaks" to capitalize on that show's success.

The 3 hour extended cut was released on DVD in a 4x3 format. I think the proper widescreen version of the extended cut can only be officially bought on blu ray in Europe. For some reason it's been removed from North American circulation.

A spectacular failure will always be more enjoyable and fascinating to watch, than your average big budget bore blockbuster of the kind that the Roland Emmerichs or Michael Bays spits out by the dozens.

In 1984 on the big screen the effects looked pretty good at the time. This film is coming up to almost 40 years old; is it worth even commenting that yes the vfx don't looks so great today. Why it wasn't received so well then was because the marketing was geared towards selling it as the next Star Wars. There were even action figures and board games, and with that game plan in mind it went as well as you'd expect.

Well Christy gave Dune 2021 an 8.8 while Alonso gave it a 6.8. So maybe that was more Alonso.

The TV version is actually really, really good. I'm a total Dune nerd and it's my favorite version of this incarnation of Dune.

*No spoilers here.* Choosing names for fictional people and objects in sci-fi/fantasy stories is a tightrope. Your audience will have a hard time remembering them if they're too hard to pronounce or if they're mundane and uninteresting. And if they're too far-fetched, your audience will dismiss them as silly and laugh. DUNE 1984 suffers from this problem. Sure, the lore comes from Frank Herbert's novel, but this adaptation deserves some of the blame. It presents the information in a way that requires viewers to take notes. You see, there's a feud between House Atreides and House Karkonnen on Planet Arrakis. Its inhabitants include Piter de Vries, Thufir Hawat, Princess Irulan Corrino, Sayyadina Ramallo, Stilgar, Captain Iakin Nefud, Gurney Halleck, Feyd-Rautha, Chani Kynes and Otheym. And who's the hero at the center of it all? The one who might defeat the Sardaukar? The one who must pass the Gom Jabbar test? The one who might become the Kwisatz Haderach? Drumroll... It's Paul. Ummm... Really? And who's the main villain? Jeff? While I was watching the movie, I was reminded of STAR WARS. No, not because of A NEW HOPE or THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (even though the intention was to recreate the success of those films with a new outer space franchise), but rather THE PHANTOM MENACE: So much time is spent on discussions about politics or the socio-economic landscape to the point of boredom. I was ready to praise the actors for delivering those lines seriously, since it's a sign that they respect the material despite knowing that many would consider this genre to be inferior. However, I eventually noticed that they talk the same way even when they're supposed to be emoting. I know that's part of writer/director David Lynch's style, but he usually applies it to surreal stories that occur in an everyday environment in order to generate a sense of unease. Even though the setting here is entirely fictional, the plot isn't designed to have an unusual atmosphere. Therefore, the end result is a lifeless product. 4/10 The actors in DUNE 2021 also deliver their lines seriously. The difference is that they're are instructed to display more emotions (Rebecca Ferguson seems to struggle, but only in some scenes) and that the characters were designed to be invested in what they say and do. In fact, my favorite scene happens at the beginning: Leto (Paul's father) is given an offer by a messenger. Instead of simply saying "I accept," he spends several seconds talking about the values that he and his people believe in. Details like this don't move the story forward, but they absorb the viewer into this fictional world. Neither adaptation of the novel has the pacing that the plot requires. Even though the second one is better overall, I still claim that the first one's visual presentation has more personality. The locations looked like sets, but they were inventive and distinctive enough to be told apart. The CGI effects haven't aged well, but the practical effects have. They brought some unique creatures to life. Here, all the effects are great, but between the limited color palette and the preference for realism over extravagance, most of the locations blend together. Cinematographer Greig Fraser does a good job in every scene, except for the one where a giant sandworm appears right in front of Paul. It seems like the viewer is expected to pay attention to the creature's details, based on the shot composition, but the bad lighting is an obstacle. In case you're wondering: No, I don't want to speculate on whether the first attempt at bringing this story to the big screen (as told in the entertaining documentary JODOROWSKY'S DUNE) would've been the best version. Too many variables. 6/10

This is the only version of Dune that is worth watching. If not, just read the book, it's a fascinating read. That's why the book is a legendary sci-fi classic.

I think it was too hardcore, dry, sci fi / horror for a general audience. It was long for the time. It received negative press for being confusing, the novelty of the glossary boosted the notion. I enjoyed the alternate universe that was created and the cast . David Lynch described the process of making it as a nightmare because of the studio and he wasn't interested in the material.

I saw the 1984 when I was in high school. I really didn’t understand it and I don’t think it was meant to be sorta funny it just over the years became this campy movie. All I remember is Kyle M riding the worm like a horse. I and that very dramatic score.

True cinephiles know that there are a number of versions of this film and the one they talk about here with all the endless narration is NOT David Lynch's cut of the movie and he disowned it. I thoroughly recommend the alternative Redux version which was recut by SpiceDiver which makes the story understandable without all the narration.

I remember attending the premiere for this and on the way out nearly being flattened by the press surrounding Sting! All desperate to get a shot. lol Personally I ended up finding myself a tad bored, not helped by my then boyfriend boring me rigid by giving a running commentary as in 'Oh thats from the first book, and that been brought over from the second" Give me a break, I really don't care! lol

@@davadh I just meant to express that I find the new Dune movie lifeless as well. Sry if that wasn't clear. And I don't think reading the book will drastically change the enjoyment that the 1984 adaption offers. Dune 2021 on the other hand might benefit to have It's viewers memorize every line in the book though.

Although I haven't seen the 1984 version in a few years, I do have fond memories (I have also read 2 books in the Dune series so I am a fan) of this movie. It was so over the top that I just loved it. The 2021 version is different, but still enjoyable. My only regret is seeing the 2021 version on a small screen. Maybe they will re-release Dune 1 before Dune 2 emerges.

I seriously think if they review this movie in 1984 they probably like it less, just like most critics back in the day. It doesn’t hold up for me at all, but it’s equally as entertaining as Tommy Wiseau’s The Room

rather odd they could not capture the spirit of the movie except that its rushed. the least they could do is at least compare the 2 movies which they did not.

Denis Villeneuve should have ended with Moadib. Because it's the desert rat that keeps appearing throughout the movie... But I liked it anyway. Come on, Lynch's movie is not better than the new one! Until the middle is somewhat interesting (vilains apart), but the second half is a total mess! Also, he had no idea how to and didn't even try to do the choppers...

@anerd8520 2 года назад
@@JoseChavez-rf4ul Dune was never meant to be a “funny”. I struggle most with reviews from people who have never read the book. This is why I feel Denis is the only director that could tempt non-readers into the world I adore. DL’s Dune is a fever-dream of Denis’ film. Better yet, the Spaceballs version of Denis’ film. (Apologies Mel Brooks, nothing compares to you!)

I think this is my first and last Breakfast All Day. Christie and Alonzo would have benefitted from reading the book, which came with - guess what - a glossary. It's one thing to know movies, but I feel like a little more effort should go into the review of a movie inspired by a book.
