I know it's not the most important part of the plot, but no mention of the titular duel?? I feel that in a post-Game of Thrones world, the duel was especially brutal and suspenseful in a way that only Scott could make it. An absolute slobberknocker.

I enjoyed this discussion. My observations were much like your own. I’m pretty much stunned by many reviewers, mostly male, that missed the subtleties between chapters. Though I probably shouldn’t as nuance seems lost on society as a whole. The difference between LeGris and Marguerite’s version of the rape is so striking and, yet, so many missed it. I probably wouldn’t have bothered with this film other than I’m a huge Jodie Comer fan. As always she brings it! Kudos to Ridley and the writers for not completely glossing over Marguerite as history has already done in the many retellings of this tale and casting an actress who brought sympathy and pathos to this brave women who spoke out at the risk of her own life (which you didn’t mention).

I saw the trailer for this and was so confused. Nobody cast in this looked like they belonged in a movie like this. Curious to hear more from you. Edit: less than a minute in and the plot already is NOTHING like what I expected from the trailer.

so I looked up the translation and Jacques le Gris comes out to 'Jacques the Grey', while Jean de Carrouges is 'Jean of the Red Square'... rather fitting consider that Jacques ends up as a cold dead grey corpse, the combat takes place in something of a square, and red is certainly en vogue that cold December day

I've seen this movie and I've seen 2 reviews... One by 2 men, and this one (done by 2 women). And the women's review is EXACTLY what I took away from the film. You ladies picked up on all the subtleties. Thank you. You picked up on the shoes, the changes in voice inflection. You saw what the men reviewers missed... Which I think was the ENTIRE point of filming it in 3 viewpoints.

@@stellabrown909 i disagree. you’ve only to take a quick glance around youtube to see how easy it is to create a non spoiler review. plus they talked about specific lines and moments that are unique to the film, that aren’t history. now, i’ve seen the movie so i don’t mind in the slightest but i think it would’ve been nice for them to put what kind of review this was in the title so as not to ruin it for unsuspecting viewers.

@@stellabrown909 It's only hard to beat around the bush with widely known true stories. I'd be hard pressed to believe that anyone outside of either a history buff or someone thoroughly knowledgeable of women's suffrage would know anything of this story. It's not exactly the story of the Titanic. It's VERY easy to review and not tell any of the hard points of this film purely as a film; completely separate of the actual events and not spoil anything for the vast majority of movie-goers. You should never assume that 100% of your viewers are familiar with the work you're reviewing. A spoiler warning is a nice curtesy and a good practice that offends no one and helps everyone.

Didnt i read somewhere that Ben A was meant to play the Adam Diver part but couldn't due to filming conflicts with Batman or being on a boat with JLo. But I definitely read/think thst part was his ans he gave it up. Thats probably why its up and it makes sense that if those two were writing together again... that it would have been a part where they were pitted against each other... like seeing their two sides. Who's the female writer? What has she does in her past?

No reviewers I've listened to have mentioned the second time Margurite was assaulted, by her husband after she told him about the first assault. It brought up the issue of marital rape, which none of the characters saw as wrong. Even Margarite didn't know what to call it even though she obviously didn't want to do it. Society was just completely dumb about bodily autonomy , but we can't say much when marital rape was only made illegal in the US in what- like the 90s?

Question for those who've seen it. Is this movie really dim / dark? ie, hard to see? I fear that I'd fall asleep in a dark theater looking at a big dark screen. I don't mind it if it's grey but is it well lit? An example would be that episode from Game of Thrones where almost nothing is visible.

There was talk of Damon and Drivers friendship which to me was not shown at all. Drivers character knew Damon would be away how did he know Comers house staff and mother in law would be away? A missed opportunity was to give the actress playing Damons mother better dialogue Imagine if they got Maggie Smith. The Duel sequence is a bit of a masterpiece. Driver was fantastic Affleck his very American accent and. the Liberace clothing was distracting. Overall good film thanks to Comer and Driver
