I think the movie is a huge Hommage of the best films in cinema history: 2001, Lawrence of Arabis , apocalypse and some more even some scences were orientated on some painting for example when Leto lays naked on the chair like Jesus Also the soundtrack pays Hommage: Right now I am listing to Full Metal jacket theme on Spotify and I would say it have a similiar percussion industrial vibe like Dune especially in the beginning

Le film est magnifique. Ce que je continue à ne pas comprendre c'est pourquoi l'histoire de Yueh a été brutalement réduite, pourquoi la musique ne nous laisse pas un instant de répit de méditation, pourquoi les décors sont aussi vides, pourquoi les dialogues qui sont un des plus grands plaisirs de Dune sont-ils aussi maigres ??? C'est dommage car ça crée un déséquilibre par rapport aux autres éléments du film qui sont excellents.

There’s something about this movie

I had to beat FOX with a stick to get this.

SPOILERS I was disappointed they just got wiped out without a fight. Then the movie kinda just went on forever after that with the only things happening was him and his mom escaping capture, crossing the desert and seeing a giant worm, then he killed a dude to be accepted by the Fremen and meet Zendaya. With like 20 minutes of him having visions of her in between all of that. I also would of liked a little more explanation as to why they use blades instead of guns mostly. However the visuals and music were breath taking and have left an imprint on me like no other movie. I an unsure how true this movies is to the book.

Still not out in Australia I better stop watching.

Dear Mr. Villeneuve: I’m sorry. I’m disappointed: The Dune Novels are an important part of what introduced me to Western Fencing. An art that has enriched my life beyond measure. Unfortunately, Western Fencing is stigmatized and poorly respected due to the movie industries depictions in silly romps like Daffy Ducks “dodge parry twirl” and dork fest renaissance fairs. This movie had the opportunity to depict western fencing as the serious and effective martial art that it is. So, for me, despite the movies beauty, I remain disheartened and can only watch and think of what could have been. I’m sorry I don’t mean to be polemic I’m as excited about this movie as anyone but as a western martial artist I had hopes that have been dashed by the previews. Once again the bias for eastern sword arts and design has infiltrated the sword props and techniques used in this latest adaptation. I maintain that It is the Rapier that should be wielded by the house Atreides and the denizens of the Imperium, not some unholy sci-fi version of the Japanese Katana. Please allow me this opportunity to explain: I do not contest the fact that single combat with knives is the most prevalent style described in the novel. Knives are mentioned 125 times while swords are only mentioned 25 times, however, there are many metaphoric references to fencing and when swords are referenced specifically it’s clear that the training received is founded in the art of European Fencing and the Sword used in practice is a Rapier. Here are a few of the most prominent examples. When Gurney Halleck arrives to the training room to give Paul a lesson he brings along a host of weapons: “Halleck dropped the weapons on the exercise table, lined them up-the rapiers, the bodkins, the kindjals, the slow-pellet stunners, the shield belts”(Herbert, 75 books.apple.com/us/book/dune/id597944491.) Rapiers are a kind of sword that developed based on Renaissance Humanist ideals. Given that the philosophy of Herberts Novel shares these ideals, it makes sense that Rapiers are the swords of choice in the Imperium. Rapiers are the only swords mentioned by name in the book. Rapiers are historically known to be the pinnacle swords designed explicitly for single combat; so when Duke Leto relates to His Son the intricate nature of statecraft he uses a fencing metaphor: ”Knowing where the trap is-that’s the first step in evading it. This is like single combat, Son, only on a larger scale-a feint within a feint within a feint…seemingly without end.” (Herbert, 97 books.apple.com/us/book/dune/id597944491.) Feints are common to all fighting systems, however, given the nature of Pauls training he is evidently referencing either doublé degagé or a triplé, both are specific fencing techniques known as compound attacks involving three or more feints. Documentation of fencing/fighting began in Spain as early as 1458 and 1471 and has continued to this day. Many of treatises on fencing described techniques using a Rapier but were not exclusively for the sword**, however, the method of teaching principles of distance,position, tempo, technique, and strategy, common to all combative arts, including, bayonets and knives, was through swordsmanship. This concept is represented in this excerpt describing gladiatorial combat with knives between Feyd-Rautha and a captured Atreides fighting man: “He held his knife sword-fashion, cocked slightly outward in the stance of a trained fighter.” (Herbert, 671 books.apple.com/us/book/dune/id597944491.) This is illustrative of the fact that, at least within the fighting tradition of the house Atreides, let alone the imperium in general, that Rapier swordsmanship provided the fundamental principles of combat employed even when the weapon is not a sword. I could expound at length with regard this topic and continue to hypothesize upon metaphoric and directly related references to swords like descriptions of the arms of guards wielding swords but, I feel, it would belabor my point. Fencing theory was well studied and rapiers are a common; much more common that we’re led to believe from David Linches adaptation, where everyone wears a dagger in the very same location a sword should have been worn. The question is; What might the they look like? It would be a mistake to simply utilize 16th century Rapier designs, that most people associate with silly romps like the Princess Bride, for the serious and deadly weapons that represent the fighting prowess of: “Duncan Idaho, the Swordmaster of the Ginaz.” Herbert, 65 books.apple.com/us/book/dune/id597944491.) or the ferocious combat abilities of the mighty Sardoukar! The Rapiers of this distant future could have manifested with qualities of design representing advancement in ergonomics and technology developed from centuries of development from the forms of antiquity. Advancement is unique to western martial arts as opposed to a static adherence to antique tradition of the east. As form follows function, had fire arms been rendered impotent by Holtzman shields modern techniques would have ultimately changed the design of the rapier. Had you directed a Kinesiological analysis of our modern Olympic sport, guided by the historically knowledgeable fight choreographers at your disposal, would have envisioned a rapier/sword that wasn’t just a disingenuous futuristic fantasy prop, but a functional weapon, a “Modern” Rapier morphologically forged by more than a century of Proficiency while retaining the strength and durability required for real combat. In Dune, Escrime is a physical analogy of the mind's eye. It is exemplary of the deadly accuracy the strategy the hyper awareness precognition the expert techniques of the feint the thrust the parry and the reposté. Engaging controlling disengaging and maneuvering. Fencing is not only cognate to statecraft, but also representative of the: mental prowess, intrigue, the guile, the deceit, the misdirection, the brutality, the life taken and the life spared; a trial by ordeal, a test of courage, “Entretisser,” all actions woven into the needle wrought cerebral tapestry that is Dune. The sword is no mere cudgel used to strike wildly, hands clasped tightly, like a monkeys fist around the jawbone of some dead animal making wild gestures born of fear and hope! In Dune hope is for the weak minded. The sword abhors hope it demands the dexterity of the human hand with its manipulator and assistant's fingers deftly governing the counter balance of pommel to point with singular purpose. Its path, an abstract strategy commanded by a human mind executed with the human body, that transcends far beyond the point, to observe and assess the fortitude of the ramparts that lay ahead and create the opening where there was once an Impassable defense to finally administer the ”attack sinister.” and strike at the cynosure of that which stands in antipathy to the ideologies held sacred.
