"If Dune part two doesn't happen... I'm gonna lose it." Well there's a ringing endorsement of a film if ever there was one
@HimmelGanger

That is the problem with this movie, it is one long teaser trailer, I saw it a month ago here in Norway, and I agree the movie feels very weird and not complete and as such if I have to judge on its own this is a pointless movie. If part 2 gets made I will revisit that opinion. The movie is very pretty but I feel it is dead, there is not a feeling that this is a living place/galaxy and that is also why I was disappointed in the movie it doesn't suspend my sense of disbelief and, since the worlds doesn't feel like a place where people live in.

going to have to disagree on sound design - i enjoyed the film but it was the weakest part of the movie. there were a lot of times - as a person who's read the books many times - I was left thinking "What the hell did she just say?" I am sitting there in the theater enjoying the extra layers of immersion wishing I was watching it on HBOMax so I could turn on CC. Mostly that complaint was centered around Jessica (whos performance I felt was overly emotional, it did not convey the bene gesserit as masters of their own bodies.. I mean.. these women can alter molecules in their own body, control every muscle fiber and are trained to be master manipulators and Jessica portrayed none of that to me. I also felt like the movie was made for fans - but it's going to leave your ordinary person going 'wtf...' because there is so much that isn't given context. Which does not give me hope for part 2 being made. Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed it - it has flaws - but I liked it. (The other thing that really annoyed me was the scene filmed outside around the date palms. It very much felt like they forgot to do a LUT correction - the brightness was dialed back so much... felt like it had been filmed through a pair of sunglasses.

I can think of two movies that were shot all desert (in recent times) 1.dune 2.mad max. Mad max was a great action film, but when I was watching it, I was so underwhelmed by how boring the desert was to look at. I thought I was going to be in for more boring scenery because mad max showed me how boring sand really is. But damn was I wrong, the cinematography was absolutely stunning, it has to be seen in theaters to be truly appreciated. I loved the way the sand moves during the worm scenes and not only was it a visual treat, it had motivation. All in all this film was masterful in almost every aspect (I was a little disappointed with the lack of lore, considering the source material) but an absolute joy to watch. Technically perfect, immaculate set design, scored by a living legend and one of the greatest works of sci-fi done justice. Please watch this film so we can get another one.

It's incredibly funny that there are some idiots and ingnorance complain that Dune is a "Star Wars rip off" when the original book came out years before the original Star Wars. Dune inspired a lot of sci fi movies including Star Wars, even Denis Villeneuve himself said that most of SW's main ideas came from Dune and it's true. And the best part is, it has inspired a lot of generation and it's gonna continue to inspire more, the book is timeless masterpiece. Dune did it first not Star Wars. Newflash, he didn't, it's a visual masterpiece, and the crappy adaptation. Pacing is rushed after a slow start, characters underused and in the case of Lady Jessica so badly written it's not even funny, I might need to read the book again just be sure that Jessica is a hand wringing borderline neurotic on the edge of hysteria 24/7, because I'm pretty sure she is nothing at all like that in the books, that was sarcasm btw, Rebecca Ferguson is a fine actress and she is let down by some of the worst writing I've ever seeen in an adaptation. You say you've read the books, I suggest reading Dune again after the hype has worn off and asking yourself if Villeneuve could've done better job. There is no escaping the simple fact that it is a bad adaptation, no ammount of visual brilliance will change that, for it to look this good and fail so badly at giving us the adaptation it deserves is just sad, deaparately sad.

I teared up at certain parts of the movie, especially when the father dies and the mothers anxiety toward her sons fate also made me feel vulnerable. There’s only 2 movies that have ever given that escapism for me, Avatar and Tron Legacy, and I’m sure the IMAX 3D presentation played a hand in that.. Aquaman maybe, kinda, visuals were really good. Neither of the Blade Runner movies did it. Space movies like 2001 and Gravity were close. And I can already tell from Dune’s cinematography/visual language this ain’t it. SciFi dessert landscapes have never grabbed me, unless pod racing was involved but that had more to do with the racing than the setting. The shot of Liu Kang’s silhouette in front of the sun/desert landscape in the MK movie struck awe in me better than anything here. I did not like Bladerunner 2049’s slow burn at all, despite loving the IP’s cyberpunk motifs. I don’t know anything about Dune’s story/characters but if they’re not strong enough to carry this “cinematic experience” than I fear it’s just gonna be another 2049 for me. Avatar’s the greatest “world experience” escapism of all time, Tron Legacy a close second. Everything else is miles behind IMO and requires interaction via a video game to be a truly immersive experience.

@Lycanthrope Nah, Momoa was perfectly fine. OG Duncan isn't the most unique or multifaceted character in the book and Momoa giving him a bit of personality, even if that personality was basically just a slightly more civilized version of Ronin from Atlantis, worked well. The meat of Duncan's story takes place outside of the original novel in books that are, honestly, pretty unlikely to ever be adapted and what we got of him here served this story well enough.

What exactly made him "terrible" and why would you waste so much time on it? You didn't like it, awesome, jog on. I was genuinely impressed by this movie, which shocked me. I grew up reading all six of the "Dune" books and it's one of my favorite series of all time. But I thought the sheer magnitude and scope of the first book alone was impossible to turn into a good movie. Very happy to see I was wrong. One aspect of the movie I really enjoyed was that, unlike the other film and miniseries attempts, they actually touch on the plot element of the "Missionaria Protectiva," which is the policy of the Bene Gesserit to basically invent religions and superstitions on less advanced worlds so their members can manipulate the locals if the need arises. This matters a lot to me, because the previous attempts to film Dune tend to ignore this extremely important element of the story. This often leads to the inaccurate criticism that Paul is embodying the elements of a cliche "messianic" or "mighty whitey" trope by apparently fulfilling the realities of the Fremens' magical savior prophecy. The whole point of the books is that, of course he fulfills the elements of the Fremens' prophesized savior. The entire prophecy was bullshit invented by foreign powers so that those who were aware (ex. Lady Jessica) of it could manipulate them to their own ends. The entire point of Paul supposedly being the "Voice from the Outer World" is that messiah prophecies are idiotic and cults of personality are dangerous.

@Robert-hz9bj
@Robert-hz9bj 2 года назад
@Mike Hunt It's easy to miss sometimes thanks to the sheer amount of STUFF happening. Dune deals with such a massive volume of themes, ranging from the political to the ecological that it's crazy easy to miss one or two. It took someone else pointing it out for me to realize that Melange was likely (at least in part) a metaphor for oil.
@Robert-hz9bj
@Robert-hz9bj 2 года назад
@Mike Hunt There's a wonderfully telling moment from the books where Liet Kynes meets Paul for the first time and realizes that Paul managed to put on his stillsuit correctly despite it being the first time he ever wore one. Now, for the reader or someone not from Arrakis, this would probably just be taken as "Oh, this boy is very intuitive," or "I see he's really good at the Bene Geseritt observational techniques his mother taught him." Kynes, on the other hand is absolutely blown away by this, remembering a line from the prophecy "He shall know your ways as if born to them," planting the seed in Kynes' mind that there might be something to this "Voice from the Outer World" thing, even though we see later that there are a ton of Fremen traditions and cultural norms (aka, "ways") that Paul doesn't know jack-shit about.

Some complain about Timotheé Chalamet not being like the Paul they wanted, but if you actually read the book, he’s pretty spot-on! He’s kind & smart, but also reluctant and troubled with emotions, and Chalamet seems to nail that with his performance.

It's an immersive experience. Beautifully shot with a strong cast. The slow burn pace is apt as there are thousands of years of history at play between the different political factions. Love the choice of a dark color tone with the Bene Gesserit scenes. Fits their modus operandi to a tee.

I personally didn't think this was anywhere near as good as Bladerunner. I also though Zimmer was just high the entire time he wrote this score. It seemed a lot more flat than his other work, just loud. But once you listen to it out of the theater it's not very interesting.

The Gom Jabbar scene is one of the most incredible audio-visual sensory overload experiences I’ve ever had in a cinema. That was chilling and the tension was palpable. Brilliant acting by Timothee Chalamet and Charlotte Rampling. Also props to Hans Zimmer and the singer during the Gom Jabbar. And can we please talk about how amazing Villenueve is at world-building? He takes his time with setting up the worlds, the factionalism of the houses and the empire. So so good.
