The black and white scenes on Geidi prime are day shots... they even tell you why: they have a "black sun", that for some reason doesn't produce color... but indoor shots have artificial light. The effect looks different than typical black and white film because its infrared film.

2:38 - under their black sun, they use infrared cameras, indoors it's normal. I don't believe we saw daylight outdoors Giedi Prime in part 1, just a couple night establishing shots, and indoors scenes.

No, it's because the filmmakers are pretentious clowns and knew that people like you will defend them no matter what.
@keiichi8191
@keiichi8191 4 месяца назад
That's DV's justification for shooting those scenes in greyscale, but there's nothing in the actual Dune lore that says Giedi Prime orbits a black sun. More to the point, a black sun (which don't actually exist, unless they're confusing them with a black dwarf star, but those don't operate in such a way) that shines in the infrared spectrum would be invisible, so everyone in those outdoor scenes would be completely blind in reality. So the real answer to Thorias' question regarding why those scenes were randomly in black and white is really that it was just because DV thought it would be "neat" to film some scenes with infrared cameras, and also really wanted to emphasize with the color palette how bleak and brutal the Harkonnens were.
@waltergold3457
@waltergold3457 4 месяца назад
@@keiichi8191 A "black sun" makes as much sense as the time dilation in INTERSTELLAR. (Gravity sufficient to slow time by weeks or months or years would instantly crush any astronaut to a smear one molecule deep.) You see the same thing in Hollywood as you do among many RU-vid creators - half-digested science, with a sprinkle of technical jargon, expounded by ignoramuses for clickbait.
@ravissary79
@ravissary79 4 месяца назад
@keiichi8191 no it's not that the sun is infrared... heck OUR sun is infrared, and most light specra in between. No, he's saying the film was SHOT using infrared film. That's not "an excuse to shoot in grayscale" it's not typical Grayslake, it's infrared. If you ever went through a photography phase back when film was more accessible, infrared film isn't even that exotic... but it produces dream-like black and white images. If the set was built with this in mind you could increase the visual drama in an otherworldly way that most people can't put their finger on, but is stunning. The "black sun" is the excuse, but it was an inspired idea and looks amazing.

Dune Part 2 is what modern films should be. Not just entertaining but so much depth and action the performances are unforgettable. I liked the first movie but it was really slow paced but part 2 really builds off that of part 1 and makes a a great cinematic experience. It really feels like you don’t necessarily have to watch part 1 but at the same time you get a really big pay off if you watch part 1 to enjoy part 2.

I have a theoretical answer to the black and white. The planet where Feyd takes place, has the dark sun and turns everything it shines on, to black and white. When they escape the sun or maybe hit shade, the black and white effect is removed. And when I watched Dune Part 2 in IMax when it first hit theaters, IT WAS BY FAR, ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES I'VE WATCHED. It really makes you pay attention to the story. I think the first Dune movie was a lot harder to understand, but it was just a setup for Part 2 where the action is taking place. I really love the scene where Paul figures out how to ride sandworms.

I have read the Dune novels.. and the first book 3x. Though it's easily been 25 years since..It really escaped my mind that Chani's given Fremen name - Sihaya - translated to Desert Spring until she mentioned it. And when she said she hated the name..WITHOUT explaining why, was when I gathered that her "falling in love" with Paul was pretty much pre-ordained. Otherwise Paul will not become the Lisan Al Gaib as prophesized in Fremen lore. That lack of explanation was exactly why I love this movie. DV and its writers refused to dumb down the material by seeking lazy expositions just so moviegoers who are unfamiliar with the novel could catch up with the intricate and wildly complex storylines. I'm an avid fan of the novels and had I missed that 5-s clip, DV and his team would've simply shrugged off and say "tough shit.. better watch it again". Now that is respecting your audience (intellect and disposition). What a f@ckin masterpiece.

@@blackbette07 You know, I would credit the Dune novels but specifically Dune Messiah and the Children of Dune and the God Emperor of Dune to a certain extent as the source of perhaps 60-70% of my fundamental values in spirituality, honoring cultural differences and love. As ruthless as Paul Atreidis became, his love for Chani was pure.. and Chani is/was the kind of woman many strong men NEEDS. That idealism has stayed with me more than 3 decades after reading the Dune novels

It was not black and white, it was infrared. They mention their planet has a "black sun" which means a sun that shines light not in the human visible spectrum. Basically they live in pure darkness 24x7. What we see is what the spectators see outside via infrared glasses. When they are indoors they use regular lighting, so we see them in color. You can actually see the lighting slowly shitfing when the character walks from the inside to the outside arena.

I love this review Thorias. Great work as always. It was filmed in black and white because Geidi Prime has a black sun and weird atmosphere so the Harkonen homeworld looks weird when outside. The world is totally trashed, everything there has to be brought in. And thanks for pointing out the obvious that I’ve also been saying, that Dune is hard to follow for most of the audience members. And that adapting it is a Herculean task. I wholeheartedly agree. This adaptation has flaws, but none that made me have major issues with it.

Maybe you guys haven't read the books or don't care, but two things drag this movie down substantially. One, the Paul and Chani love story is one of the best in fiction and this movie girl-bossed Chani to the point that the love story didn't happen. Hell, Paul and Chani have a toddler son together that gets murdered by the emperor's Sardaukar. Two, and even worse, they sped the sequence of events up so that Alia wasn't born. That was a huge mistake. Alia is awesome. They even did the sequence that showed what happens to her so well that it seriously got my hopes up for when she would kill the baron. I was so mad about her not being in this movie. Now that I think about it, Alia is an awesome character in the books that ultimately gets screwed over. Makes sense the movie would screw her over too.

The visible color spectrum is represented when the Harkonnens are indoors, but when they are outdoor under their “black sun” the color spectrum is limited to grayscale. In the movie, you can see the color changing as the Baron, the Bene Gesserit, etc walk outside. Note the robes of the Bene Gesserits actually turn from black to white as well because it’s made of some advanced material.

THIS was a breath of fresh air after some disappointments and some duds especially in the last half of 2023. I already read the first book in preparation for Part One and upon watching it on HBO Max two years back, I became interested in how Warner Bros was gonna handle Part Two. To my surprise, it managed to deliver the payoff in terms of it's execution. The world-building so immense, stunning visuals, great music as always from Hans Zimmer (whether you love or hate his score filmography) slow yet effective pacing, and the way it developed the female characters that doesn't come at the expense of the main character. Even Paul's journey throughout this and Part One is well done. From lost kid to powerful leader of the Fremen which made it WAY better when compared to the 1984 version, which sadly isn't a great movie due to the dull monotone line delivery from certain actors and has many weird stuff that made it off putting despite having a much better director's cut. If I'm gonna be honest, other movies deserve at least a two part adaptation like this one like say The Neverending Story or a three part movie adaptation of Stephen King's The Shining (which already has two mini-series). Sorry if I'm exaggerating a bit. It's just that there's tons of possibilities for Hollywood to do something original when it comes to book-to-movie adaptations as long as they get it right with tons of effort of passion. Who knows? Maybe time will tell.

Showed Dune pt 1 to my mom a week ago and she could hardly follow it or stay awake, she didn't hate it but wasn't sold. Took her to pt 2 in Imax and halfway through she asked how long it was and kept checking her watch. After the movie was over I expected a lukewarm response but she said she asked how long it was because she expected it to end sooner because so much had happened and she wanted it to keep going. Said she loved it and was on the edge of her seat the entire time. I loved it myself, though part 1 came off a bit detached, part two was entirely perfect. I have no notes. Austin butler was MVP.

Lol, that’s an awesome story and welcome surprises form your mom. My dad picked up the book after part I at 82 years old and we’ve been having a great time talking about the series together. My dad never reads fiction. I think the last time he read a fiction book was Harry Potter for his grandkids. It’s the first time we’ve been to the theatre to see a movie together in another a decade. Hardly anything good to watch. The pacing is a problem in part I. Part II has a very consistent methodical pacing, and I knew the reception would be much better with this one.

I won’t be disappointed in something already destined to be bad trash. Deadpool under Disney not being allowed to poke fun of the current terrible state of Marvel, and forcing the stupid TVA from Loki is a bad sign for me. I don’t believe Ryan will have full creative freedom. And Deadpool 3 being an MCU movie is more terrible since like I said he won’t be able to poke fun of Disney’s recent trash.

Paul threatens to destroy the spice fields. The Guild rely on spice to fold space. The guild essentially acquiesces to whoever controls the spice. That’s why the phrase at the start appears: “Power over spice, is power over all.”

@@danieljameson7015 since they skipped the guild altogether so no smokey space tadpoles its not as front and center. but how is 1 ship or even 3-4 going to allow them to assault entire star systems? they'd need billions of soldiers surely there arent even 100m fremen?

It had the highest film score I’d ever seen on its first two days. It was hovering at 97-98%. I’ve never seen a film that high ever. And with it at 95 now, it didn’t fall much. The movie has great buzz.

The film overlooked Thufir Hawat's significant moment towards the end where, despite being presented with an opportunity to assassinate Paul, he chooses suicide over betrayal. The brutal demise of Rabban at the hands of the Fremen he severely oppressed-decapitation-was another crucial element not depicted, more typical movie trope to have a main character kill him.

Villeneuve acknowledges that he cut out Hawat to show more about the Bene Gessirit and I think he did the right thing because he wanted to start seeding what happens in Dune Messiah because Frank Herbert was disappointed with how most people interpreted his ending to Dune.

I was expecting him to drop the more minor threads. Jamis’ family isn’t in the film either, and I had a suspicion they wouldn’t be. The only major thing they skipped to me that would’ve helped was the dinner in Part I. That would’ve helped with understanding some of the politics. Most of what was skipped or changed were background characters or minor ones and minor plot threads. I’m glad they streamlined it. No one but book readers would understand the film if they didn’t.

Dune made more progress Avatar like Way of Water looks side quest because how different main focus of 2nd from 1st film (minerals to fish brain). Dune retains singular storyline but immediately shows the hunt for the royal. Dune pt.2 didn't give itself chance to get sidetrack what Paul promise for fremen.

Without the score by Hans Zimmer and the incredible Sandworm scenes it would just be an ok movie. I didn’t appreciate the sepia tones, I thought it was dull, lifeless and boring, especially considering how well done the cgi was.

Ecologie and water management ? is it later i'm not sure 6. sietches exploration ? 7. Maybe some specific worms should have been much bigger and they seemed to me underused ? 8. Spacing Guild and navigators ??? 9. not a fan of zendaya as chani but i liked the movie a lot and i would also brand it the best movie movie since interstellar

Glad everyone liked it, but for some reason this IP is just not for me. I've Loved sci-fi for the last 35 years (less so in the last 10) but this particular IP, just doesn't click.

To approximately pronounce Denis Villeneuve's name, it would be like ''Daenee Veel'nev"'' (francophones usually will not pronounce the second syllable and last ''e'' of the name). Yes it's French (translates as ''New city''). I know because he was born and raised in the town right next to mine accross the St-Laurent river in Québec :) Great review. just saw it last night in original English version and agree with everything you say (although the B&W part never bothered meand understand the type of ''alien'' feel they were going for). I am usually annoyed when they change things from the source material but, after seeing what has been made so far, I'm willing to give Villeneuve and his crew a chance to dazzle me further.

I wasn't enamoured by Part 1, but I prefered Part 1 to Part 2. I'd say 5/10.
