Paul takes Shaddam's daughter, the Princess Irulan, as his wife of political reasons only. The first book ends: Paul: "I swear to you now ... that you'll need no title. That woman over there will be my wife and you but a concubine because this is a political thing and we must weld peace out of this moment, enlist the Great Houses of the Landsraad. We must obey the forms. Yet that princess shall have no more of me than my name. No child of mine nor touch nor softness of glance, nor instant of desire." Jessica adds: "Think on it, Chani: that princess will have the name, yet she'll live as less than a concubine-never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she's bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine-history will call us wives."

Just to add some context for people that did not read the book: in the book Jessica and Chani were on pretty good terms and the event in the books happen over a much longer span of time (about three years, if I remember correectly). In that time Paul and Chani had a child, that is later killed during a Harkonnen attack. So, their relationship was much more adult and mature than it's depicted in the movie, and their bond much stronger.

This part was changed slightly to push the resolution between Paul and Chani into the third movie. It works for dramatic effect, but lots of people who haven't read the book are reacting angrily on the behalf of Chani right now and it makes sense without the knowledge of the books.

The wonderful, subtle art of foreshadowing: When Paul reveals that his mother is the daughter of Baron Harkonen, you should look back to the moment in Dune Part One when Paul is tested with the Gom Jabbar and the Pain Box by the Reverend Mother. At the end of the test the Reverend Mother says Paul inherits "too much power" and Paul asks "Because I'm a Duke's son?" And the Mother replies knowingly "Because you are Jessica's son. You have more than one Birthright, boy." There it is.

Everybody always assumes that when Irulan is told there is one way to maintain power, that she means marry Paul. But from their point of view, its not a sure thing. They meant marry the winner. They were pretty sure it was going to come down to either Paul or Feyd. So she was saying she would have to marry the winner. Not necessarily just Paul.
@mmeade9402
@mmeade9402 Месяц назад
Also why Irulan was eyeing Feyd in the "throne room" thing before the Fremen attack on Arrakis. And Feyd knew what was at stake also because the Baron earlier had told him they were making a play for the throne, and the only way they could do that was to put Feyd on the throne, but he would have to marry the princess the same as Paul(even though they didnt know Paul was alive at the time.)
@alanfoster6589

Anyone using atomics against people immediately incurs the wrath of all the Great Houses. So Paul utilizes them to destroy part of the shield wall that protects Arrakeen from the worms (and to a a certain extent, sandstorms).
@xen0bia
@xen0bia 27 дней назад
Yes, the misuse of atomics is what is frowned upon. Paul figures using them to destroy a natural barrier and not hitting troops or populated areas would fall under reasonable use. And even if it weren't, who's going to sign up to sanitized Arrakis, the only planet known to have spice... Nobody.
@rob7953
@rob7953 Месяц назад
In the book, Chani understands that she'll be Paul's concubine -- as Jessica was to Leto -- and that his marriage to Irulan is making his claim to the throne legitimate. I think the character was made more adversarial to underscore the story's theme: that following a charismatic leader can be dangerous. Paul isn't a hero in the book, and although we root for him early on (I mean, look at the alternatives), I think the movie did a good job of making sure we know that he's not a hero.

It is ironic that you used the word "Foundation", because the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov was voted the best sci-fi series of all time by the Hugo/Nebula awards. It also came out well over a decade before the first Dune novel. Maybe things have shifted over the years, and the Foundation series didn't do so well. No one's going to argue that Lord of the Rings isn't the best fantasy book/film combo ever, though.

When Paul fights Feyd-Rautha, he actually has no idea of the outcome, even though he has full vision, because prescient people are invisible to each other. As you recall, Feyd is also a potentially Kwizats Haderach, a very underdevelopped one, but still. Earlier, after Paul took the water of life, we saw a very quick glance of the stabbing and that's all Paul knew of the fight - possibly because at this point Feyd is dead and therefore no longer shielded from his vision.

Hi gents - continuing to love your reactions since first having the privilege of seeing Lewis watch the OG Star Wars trilogy. I was lucky enough to see both Prt 1 and 2 in 70mm IMAX at the BFI in London (one of the only theatres of this type in the UK) and love them both. However, I still think that Part 1 is a tighter film with a (very marginally) better score. Regardless of my preference though I cannot deny how incredible the sound design was in Part 2 - the sound of the thumpers blasting out of the IMAX speakers was incredible, as was the the noise generated during Paul's worm ride (it sounded like a freight train surging through the amphitheatre). Love and respect to you both - keep the awesome content coming!

I read Dune in 75 or 76 when I was in my late teens. Then Star Wars came out about a year and a half later. Everyone was raving about it. But I had seen the book in my mind's eye as I read it. And while Star Wars had a bunch of pretty pictures In my opinion, it was thematically simplistic in comparison to Dune. And so I longed for a movie adaptation. 1984's version left me somewhat disappointed. Obviously they had to cut a lot and changed a lot some I liked most I didn't. And I'd long ago resigned myself that they're going to have to cut a lot of the book out to make it into a movie. This is been the movie I've been waiting all these years for. It captures the spirit of the book.
