Always Board Never Boring is back in the dank dark depths of DungeonQuest for a playthrough that sees Rildo the Crafty Thief going up against Thargrim the Dark Lord of Chaos. This is a full playthrough of the classic dungeon crawler from Games Workshop, using the Heroes for DungeonQuest and Catacombs expansions. How will our unlikely heroes cope against the deadliest dungeon ever devised?
(By the way, there are a few times when Always Board refers to tiles that are clearly crossroads as T-junctions. It's not a big deal, but it annoyed him when he was editing the footage, so it might annoy you too.)

I love the little narrative that pops up in these games.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

Me too. It's little things like both of the giant spiders popped up within a few rooms of each other, so there must have been a nest nearby. Meanwhile, Rildo finds two dead adventurers in the stomping ground of the vampire. And there's something pretty amusing about how many traps Rildo the master thief managed to stumble into. All great stuff that keeps me coming back to this game over and over again.

No Snotlings in this excursion? What a lucky warriror!! Strangely, when we play I nearly always draw them and seem to have a difficult time defeating them. Also, my gf who plays sometimes never has any trouble with them and always needles me about it: "I never have any problem with them," she slyly taunts.... Oh, so maddening! But that's what is great about good ol' Dungeonquest!! :D
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

I played a couple of games yesterday and the snotlings turned up twice. Once they were killed with a single mighty swing, the second time they were a little more persistent. They are almost always a bad time. But as you say, that's the joy of the game. I love the many ways the dungeon has of tormenting you. Thanks for watching!

Picked up the game a few weeks ago..... played with a friend who summed up the game after two attempts..... Its mean! I was butchered twice, first time after three tiles and a multitude of monsters, second time after reaching the lair and grabbing 5000gp then being butchered by a multitude of monsters. My friend got trapped by the tiles and run out if time on both journeys,. Both enjoyed it immensely, a great shout, thank you!

Thanks. I've done a few more playthroughs on the channel, but this was the most fun and showed just how mean the dungeon can be sometimes. This is the 1987 Games Workshop edition, and there are two other versions (second edition and revised second edition, both from Fantasy Flight Games). All versions are out of print, of course, but the GW one is for me the only option. It just has a great aesthetic to go with the hilariously deadly gameplay. It's still available for pretty reasonable money (around £50) although the two expansions are usually very expensive.

Yes, we missed out on going into the Catacombs, and the way you come out of them (which is a bit weird, I always thought). So it looks like another episode is needed some time with some more different characters? I don't know if that is likely to happen, but it seems that you always get good comments for an episode of Dungeonquest.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
I do tend to get nice comments for these, but unfortunately, the stats tells me there isn't a strong audience there for this type of content. That doesn't mean I won't do more (I probably will because I enjoy doing them and I want to show off some of the other characters), but shooting and editing these playthroughs takes a solid day, and that's a lot of time to invest in a video that so few people are watching.

Some encounters are different, and the Vampire has been removed for some unknown reason. I taught my wife how to play it last night, and of course she won and I fell to the minions of Dragonfire Castle as per usual lol. Thanks for watching. My biggest issue with FFG was they would never just do a straight reprint of something. They always had to mess around with it and add in complications that weren't necessary. I think their version is now more expensive than GW's version on the secondary market!

You're welcome. There are a few other playthroughs on my channel, but this one is the most interesting one I've filmed so far. The base game just had four plastic miniatures. The metal miniatures are all from an expansion called Heroes for DungeonQuest, which I was lucky enough to find for a good price earlier this year. I did a full breakdown of that expansion if you want a better look at any of the miniatures before you buy any, and there are a couple of painting guides in the playlist too. Brutal is an understatement, but that's part of the charm. Just surviving is an achievement, and really you have to play with the mindset that it's not really about winning, but how much hilarious misfortune occurs before you die horribly.

One of my wargaming friends had a copy of this and while he doesn't play it anymore, he didn't want to sell it. We used to have a "Dungeonquest Deathtoll" and kept track of which characters died and which player ran them, along with any treasure they found. Only had five or six actually survive, so the game is really brutal. I forgot the name of the character but the Valkyrie was a favorite.

The Valkyrie is really fun because of her running ability that means she's unlikely to run out of time but very likely to fall head first into spikes.

Yes, you can't do anything else the turn you use the healing ring. I don't remember the specifics of this playthrough but if I used a healing ring and didn't skip a turn it would be an oversight. Technically you are supposed to open doors when going back through them as well but I play that special room effects are based on the character being in the room. Of the games that are available for sale today, is there any similar to this?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 года назад
I don't think there's anything quite like it. I mean, there are plenty of dungeon-delves where you lay out tiles as you explore (things like Bardsung), but DungeonQuest is so deadly, doesn't ever give you power ups, new items, or skills, and is a competitive game that you can still play solo. Also, many dungeon-delves have grid-based movement, while in DungeonQuest each tile is a single space. Drakon, which is much more confrontational, ticks some of the boxes. There's Bag of Dungeon, which is a small tile-laying dungeon delve and although I haven't played it, it looks (on the surface at least) like a similar sort of game. The Dungeons and Dragons adventure games involve laying out tiles every turn, and facing lots of monsters and traps, but they're much bigger in scope, with lots of special powers, magic items, and dice-based combat on a grid. There's also a tile-laying dungeon game called Delve, but I don't know much about it.

DungeonQuest will be good to play with the kids, because it's so accessible. I know the game Sorcerer's Cave (and Mystic Wood), but I don't own it and have never actually played it. It's supposed to be a pretty light, simple dungeon-crawl so should be an equally good fit with younger gamers.
