Always Board Never Boring once again ventures into the darkest and most deadly of dungeons to play DungeonQuest, a classic dungeon crawl from 1987. In this solo playthrough, he puts El-Adoran Sureshot the ranger through his paces. Will El-Adoran survive to loot the dragon and bring home the spoils of his adventures?

It is strangely satisfying, in this age of wildly extravagant Kickstarters, to see Dungeonquest still alive and being played. And it doesn’t look dated. Also, the streamlined rules should be a lesson to all developers. Great! One comment; we used to use the convention of always orienting the mini towards the exit they intended to use before a new tile was drawn. Just to avoid any arguments - so no one could say the player was taking a look at the tile before deciding which empty slot to place it in. You might like to check out the Rogue Trooper game GW produced back then. Very good fun.

Thanks for watching. DungeonQuest is great, and now I have both expansions for it too. I'm gradually gathering a collection of all the old bookshelf games from GW as part of my vintage collection, and already have DungeonQuest, Talisman, Valley of the Four Winds and Mummy's Tomb. Rogue Trooper is on the list.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Ha ha! I’d completely forgotten about Mummy’s Tomb. Great looking game, but I don’t remember loving it. I think I remember it being anticlimactic in some way. Though perhaps I just lost a lot. Only two games I could add to that list would be Blood Royale and the 2000AD Block Mania (and Mega Mania expansion). Blood Royale was perhaps too mature for my young mind to grasp. And the rules for BM/MM were unclear, but still fun. Good luck with the RT hunt. I know it’s not canonically correct for there to be up to six troopers on the table, but I remember the games we played being tense races to be the first to confront the traitor as each player managed resources/ammo/health through mini-missions to acquire the required number of clues to reveal the traitor’s location.

@@peterdickinson4599 Mummy's Tomb is currently in a cupboard because it's a birthday gift. It's a stunning game, but not the most exciting to play. I'm planning to pick up the reprint of Block Mania and Mega Mania rather than the originals, then there's also the original Fury of Dracula and a Doctor Who game (that I'm not really interested in), and I really want a second edition Talisman rather than the first edition one because I had the second edition as a kid. Rogue Trooper is higher up the list than those, but I'm not in any hurry to collect them, I just get them when I see good deals.

I was so outraged by how well your first video went that I went and set it up for a play myself fully expecting a hiding, but also managed to escape with full pockets. Outrageous. Must be something in the water but two in a row is pretty special. Hats off. I've been playing DQ since the 90s and can probably count my decent wins on both hands...
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
In fairness, I limped out with hardly any money the first time, and with no turns to spare, so while the dungeon was very kind to me (so many empty rooms), it wasn't a particularly glorious triumph. This time was much better. A pretty decent sum of cash, and with a handful of turns (and plenty of life points) to spare. I'm surprised, because I took loads of chances in an attempt to make the video as interesting as possible. Three turns in with the dragon is my absolute limit! Who's your favourite character? I still think Volrik is the best. His stats are all in the right places. But El-Adoran's bow makes him a close second (if only he had a few more life points). I'm going to start using some of the expansion characters, and I'm particularly fond of the chaos warrior.
@soob99
@soob99 3 года назад
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Volrik is a good shout but I usually take Sir Rohan or Ulf. I just like them thematically. I must confess that I do tend to play the Revised 3rd Edition these days though.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
Interesting choice. Ulf I can understand, because he's a bit of an all-rounder, but Sir Rohan is a struggle. I feel like armour doesn't get used all that much, so he suffers from having too many points in the wrong place. He's almost always going to end up falling down a bottomless pit!
@soob99
@soob99 3 года назад
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I don't disagree but in a game that's so heavily dictated by pure luck, ultimately it really doesn't make much difference. In all likelihood you're going to lose no matter which character you pick. DungeonQuest isn't one to overthink, stats-wise, and to be frank that's why it's one of my favourite games. Thematically I just love the classic knight in shining armour going in to fight the dragon :D
@soob99
@soob99 3 года назад
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring You mentioned it in the comments of one of your other DQ videos and I agree completely that the D&D Adventure System games owe a lot to DungeonQuest. I love those too and have them all! Games like this and the DDAS ones take a lot of flack for being too 'light' and luck based, but I find them incredibly elegant and well designed. There's so much to be said for a game you can set up, play and put back in the box within 90 minutes, but that still gives you the essentials of the dungeon crawl experience. 9 times out of 10 I'd rather bust out Ashardalon or DQ for an hour than fry my brain working out all the modifiers in a combat round of Descent. No disrespect the latter, but I have to be in the mood. These, I can play any time.

Another cracking episode. You are making this game look easy, when it really isn't! This time you were lucky with the tiles on the way there, and on the way back - they came out perfectly. Staying in the Dragon's Lair for three turns was a bold move, but it worked out. Can't wait for some more episodes, especially with some different adventurers from the Heroes expansion. Funny about Dark Future - I think I have a copy in the loft somewhere, and I've never played it. Bought it, but just never took to it somehow. I must have a look and see what condition it is in.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
Tell me about it. I was lucky with the tile draws, as I don't think I've ever had such a perfect alignment of paths before, and the only room that really caused problems was the one with the portcullis and door. Also a lot of the challenges I faced were combats, and El-Adoran can handle a few fights quite handily with his bow (plus I met the most cowardly troll ever). Someone like Volrik would have had a much tougher time with the death knights. Overall, luck was really with me, even though I tried to take every risky move possible to make the playthrough interesting. It's funny because I have had those games where I've fallen in a bottomless pit on my first turn. Hopefully I can catch some of those hilarious outcomes in a playthrough one day.

This was a crazy run. I tried everything to get the dungeon to respond to me and it wouldn't. My luck isn't always like this. Yesterday I played two games, that went very differently, but I wasn't filming. In the first I spent the whole game in the catacombs (thanks to giant worms) and then popped out next to a tower just as the sun was setting so I walked out with nothing. In the second, I stumbled through a chamber of darkness straight into a spike trap that killed me instantly!

That looks like great fun. Is there anything out their like Dungeon Quest that is current and still available to buy?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
Yes and no, really. The last version of DungeonQuest was printed by FFG and is now out of production as well. No idea how easy it is to get a copy. A game that seemed to draw inspiration from DungeonQuest is Drakon, also by FFG. It has a similar tile-laying system, but you're actively competing against the other heroes (only one gets out alive), and the dragon will move around the board. It's much more cut-throat, and there isn't any instant death moments. I wrote a review for it on my blog years ago. The D&D adventure board games, like Castle Ravenloft, also seem to draw inspiration from DungeonQuest. You explore by drawing tiles, and there are arrows on the tiles that tell you which way to position them and whether they contain monsters or traps. It's a full co-op, and there are miniatures and positional combat, but it has some of the same feel. Dungeon! from Hasbro is another old game that keeps getting reprinted. In that one you are a hero moving from room to room in a dungeon, fighting monsters to steal their loot. It has some of that DungeonQuest feel to it. I've reviewed it here on the channel if you would like to check it out. Finally, there's Vast: The Mysterious Manor (or one of the other games in the series, like Crystal Caverns). I've never played Vast, but it looks like it might share some similarities, although it's more of a head-to-head battle.

This has nothing to do with your video but I'm looking for a board game I saw demoed in a video a while back and I think it might have been one of yours but I can't find it now. I'm looking for a board game that had you going through basically a ruined city with tiles and there was a timer for each map where if you didn't make it to the other end in time a darkness or something would start chasing you. Honestly main reason I'm looking isn't for the rules but the tiles and models. I'm trying to find really good map tiles for games like DnD that look like dark and semi-ruined cities because I'm doing a mordheim style game and the player preference is board game not terrain. Zombicide Black Plague is ok but the tiles are a little too bright and they want something a bit darker so I've been mostly using OrcQuest inside the castle tiles but there is only so much I can do with those repeatedly.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 6 месяцев назад
If it's something you saw on my channel it sounds like you might be talking about Warhammer Quest Cursed City. In that game there is a day tracker, and once the token has gone once around the tracker night falls and the monsters get stronger. The main issue with Cursed City is the spaces on the board are oversized, so if you were looking for something with a 25mm grid (or thereabouts) those tiles might not be ideal. The miniatures are also oversized compared to ranges like official D&D minis. I doubt it, but you may also be thinking of DragonStrike, which has a doom clock and if it runs out a dragon starts chasing you, but rather than tiles that game has four fixed boards (wilderness, cave, castle, and village). Other games with useful board tiles and miniatures that you might find helpful are the Dungeons and Dragon Adventure Game titles (Wrath of Ashardalon, etc.) and Dungeon Saga. Hope this helps.
@xavierdoesntmatter
@xavierdoesntmatter 6 месяцев назад
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoringThanks, it was Warhammer Quest: cursed city I was thinking about. This game really is a co-op style game I'm playing with wife and trying to get a friend to join. Our core rules is Savage Worlds, we like that the risk is high with the system while also allowing a lot of flexibility with characters and it's pretty good at being miniature friendly. The challenge is both we are doing co-op, no DM so using DM Emulator while also trying to find a good way to handle scenery/board. So far boards like Hero Quest and OrcQuest work great and even Zombicide plays in well. I think the WQ: Cursed City would be great and I'd even like the miniatures but that is a lot of money for it. Main reason I like it is that the tiles to feel the vibe we are going for and also unlike HQ can be put how ever you want. I assume if you know about WQ: Cursed City you also know some of the lore of places like Mordheim. We have something like that in our custom world where we found a full fledged city with weird stuff going on and lots of investigating and fighting in the streets.

What's this game like multiple players?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 года назад
It's really good fun; mainly because there are people to laugh at your misfortunes. There's not a lot of direct interaction, because you can't fight each other and you come into the dungeon on different corners; but there are little things that can happen. For example, you aren't allowed to enter a space with another hero, so it's possible to block people who are trying to get by, and with more players you cycle through the small decks quickly so it's important to keep track of the cards that the other heroes are pulling. Another fun thing is that if there are multiple players in the dragon's space (the only space where this is allowed), they all draw a dragon token on their turn, and the sleeping dragon tokens only get replaced once all the heroes have left. That can get tense! The biggest difference is that when playing solo the combat is resolved with dice. You just throw a dice and look up the result on a chart. When you play against other people there's a cool modified rock-paper-scissors combat system where you have to try to bluff and double-bluff your opponent.
