Always Board Never Boring once more braves the dank maze of DungeonQuest, the classic Games Workshop dungeon crawler from 1987. This time he's shedding some light on the second expansion: DungeonQuest Catacombs. This expansion introduces magical amulets, new traps and treasures, and a whole new way to explore the dungeon so you can get to the dragon's lair before your friends. This expansion was kindly donated to the channel by Antek Maruniewicz.

Just got myself a copy of this expansion 😊 It didn’t come cheap but I had to get the box for Catacombs, it’s a massive part of the nostalgia for me. Now all I need is the Heroes expansion. I forgot the great bit of story at the start of the Catacombs rules. The characters are talking like they’ve been into the castle multiple times without dying 😂 My imagination as a child used to love the idea of being in the catacombs under the board of the game. As though the castle needed its own dungeon 😂

Well done on getting a copy of Catacombs. The Heroes expansion is wonderful. Having all the different character options, and all the metal miniatures (including replacements for the core game plastic miniatures) is a real joy and adds so much to the game.

It's crazy that the original Drakborgen had the two expansions in one package. That's a lot of new rules to deal with. Are your Search cards printed with the backs upside down from the original base game cards? Mine are and its pretty annoying because you have to straighten them when you shuffle to avoid spoilers and flip them when you draw them. The giant worm in the Catacombs deck is very, very annoying. I draw the damn thing all the time. Thanks Antek!

As a single package it's an incredibly generous expansion in terms of how much new stuff is in there. I shot this video before combining the sets and didn't notice at first, but yes, the search cards are printed upside down. Also, yes, that worm is probably the worst thing you can find!

@0:26 I noticed the shiny chaos warrior carrying a birdhouse on the left side of the box cover art has a shoulder pauldron with a prominent face on it... not unlike one of the heroes shown in the teaser video for WHQ Cursed City. Could we be getting a Dungeonquest character updated for Cursed City?? 🧐

Ha, yeah the pauldron does look a bit like Thargrim's. I think it might be a pit fighter or something like that. A little nod to one of the old classics from Warhammer Quest.

That does explain why it was so hard to spot it on the auction listings. Very neat little system for emerging from the catacombs. At some point have to save up the cash and hope someone puts the heroes and catacombs up for a semi-reasonable price. But that'll have to wait until after the investment in some paints. Coloured plastic going along a table is one thing, but metal minis don't look so good on a board.

Yeah, I don't like using unpainted metal miniatures. And the old DungeonQuest ones have lead in them, so it's generally a good idea to get some paint on them before use.

Hi. Glad to see Dungeon Quest made top spot. I have the opportunity of buying the base game and Catacombs in good condition complete for £60 both boxed. Would you say that was about right?

With a boxed catacombs that’s a steal. Catacombs is very expensive. Often well over £100 on its own.

There is no current version at the moment. The latest version was published by FFG under licence from Games Workshop, and ported into their Terrinoth setting, but that version is also out of print and hard to find. FFG did make changes to the game, but at its core it's the same.

It's not an easy game to track down these days, but if you ever get a chance to try it it's worth a go.

I think the FFG base game incorporates Catacombs (at least, I thought it did). But yeah, it never got any expansions or additional characters. Maybe one day GW will license it to another company who will do a bit more with it.
