Dungeons and Dragons minis are getting made in polystyrene now! We've seen resin, bendy plastic, and metal... and now we have hard plastic sprues. :-) This is my favorite material for building, painting, and playing. It looks like these Frameworks minis are gonna be for sale very late 2021 or early 2022. Early samples provided by WizKids for review purposes and as part of free RPG day at Crossroad Games in Standish, Maine.

More people should paint DnD minis... in real life and on here on RU-vid! :-) Question: Who are your favorite RU-vidrs who already paint a lot of DnD minis? let's give 'em some love!

Hot water followed by a cold water dunk always does wonders for me, I have even done some minor re-posing that way without any trouble. My problem is I have to strip them, remove mold lines, flashing ,and gap fill before re-priming and then finally painting it. I dig that they're doing models on sprues with all the extra options. Really makes for good value. I also like Nolzur minis and, while I've come across bendy weapons, they're pretty easy to fix with a little heat (though I've totally cut off a few and customized weapons myself). My only real complaint is with the mold lines. Like you stated, they're definitely harder to clean and end up leaving a good amount of unprimed areas that need to get covered.

Yep: mold lines, soft details, and sometimes over-sprayed primer are the primary downsides to the softer plastic. The ability to cut and modify hard plastic is its largest strength. Metal is the GOAT.

You can fix the bendy swords with a little heat, and after heat treatment they even harden. I just use a regular lighter, put the part I want above the flame for about a second, it gets even softer and I just pull it by the tip in the direction I want it to be, it quickly cools down and hardens into position. it is easier to pull it than to "bend" it into position.

I've used boiling water a bunch of times - definitely work's on the WizKids line - I managed to completely re-position a Rakdos wing (large model), swords and arms work nicely too. I get them malleable by submerging the part in recently boiled water for maybe 30 - 60 seconds, then, holding the part in the position I want it, dunk it under running cold water at the sink - works a charm.

Bendy stuff on Reaper minis and also on the older pre-painted D&D miniatures also works with heat by dipping into boiling water until you can shape the mini and cool it afterwards under cold water.

I've been playing dnd for a little longer then 20 years. I have only recently gotten into painting minis. While a friend had the biggest influence in getting getting to try. Another big reason, was I had intimidated myself out of even trying. Between cost, and the fact I didn't know anyone who painted to ask for advice or tips, I guess I just felt afraid of wasting my money on something I wasn't going to be happy with. I like everything about these except the price. Personally I find it’s hard enough to get players to pick up minis to begin with, and I think a lot of people will scoff at a price point that starts at $15, especially when 5e can be played with TotM or with digital tabletops. I do think it’s kind of weird how there’s almost no d&d miniature painting on RU-vid. Especially when you consider how many of the landmark terrain youtubers got their start doing d&d terrain.
@the_arcanum
@the_arcanum 2 года назад
I did too scoff at the price. But let me reassure you: there's plenty of content about painting fantasy minis on the Tube. Channels/painters like Miniac, Ninjon, Mindwinter Minis, Sigmars and about ten other gents and ladies are regularly pushing advanced technical and beginner content on lavis, highlighting, non metallic metals or basing. And i'm not even considering what you can lesrn from the military model hobbyists that publish on RU-vid too. Don't wait for the youtube algorithm to recommend you new stuff, do queries !

The price point is insulting. A fair price would be $4-5 USD for a small frame.
@kelimar3014
@kelimar3014 2 года назад
@@the_arcanum Oh I watch all of those, but none of them base their content in generic fantasy figures. They all focus on the GW product line and intersperse their videos occasionally with other miniatures. I mean more along the lines of seeing a miniature painting channel that doesn't paint 80%+ GW figures.
@kelimar3014
@kelimar3014 2 года назад
@@mrmaat I think $5 is low, but I'm Canadian, so my $5 probably isn't your $5. I think $10 is pretty reasonable just because of how many options come with the figure. Thats taking into account that regular Wizkids models already cost around $5 here.
@kingbobb007
@kingbobb007 2 года назад
I think it’s a fair price. Marvel Crisis single figures are around that range, and while larger in scale, they also include pricing for licensing and game design, and don’t come with much in the way of customization options. For $15 retail to get a solid figure that will provide options that become bits when not used is a pretty decent price for this market.

Framework Minis do look amazing! But I will personally always love the unpainted Wizkids sentiment. There are indeed often bend parts but it takes less than a minute and very low effort to fix them. Wiggle the bend part in hot, almost boiling water, straighten it and put it in cold or running water - fixed. Learned this quite recently, and it has changed my painting life, so I really wanted to share this tip! Happy painting =)

One thing that often works for bendy weapons is super familiar to anyone who has a large Reaper Bones collections, but immerse in hot (nearly boiling) water for about 20-40 seconds (longer for larger models) then pull out with a utensil of some kind (hot water is hot) bend to the right shape and immerse in ice water.

@@GoobertownHobbies Some plastics will return to their "proper" shape just from being heated, some you'll need to hold back into shape until it cools (hence the ice water). I've also heard of a heatgun working better for some plastic but haven't run into any minis that that was required for in my personal experience. If you do have bent minis, try the hot/cold water method and they rebend after a couple of days it might be worth playing around with a heatgun.

A typical way to fix bent parts on plastic parts is put the piece in really hot (previously boiled) water, bend it in place, then stuff into ice water to freeze it into position. That should work, I tried this for many different molded models. BTW the first miniature model figure I painted was a pewter D&D wizard, it was a logical change from working on scale models like airplanes. It was easier to demonstrate my character's position in the group or in melee. The rest of my group got the models and I offered to paint them. All were happy with the resultant "tools" for the game. Monsters got painted up shortly after.

Oh and I TOTALLY am in that population that 3D prints D&D minis. I printed my warlock and my wife's cleric, along with her pets - a starling and a possum - that follow her character around.

@@GoobertownHobbies Yeah I'm subscribed to a few Patreons or similar - The Printing Goes Ever On, One page Rules, and Heroes Infinite - that supply me with STLs I can turn into D&D figures, or use as proxies for my Sisters or Drukhari armies. They also do some that are just too pretty NOT to print and paint up, like the Dark Fairy Tales line of minis that had Snow White and Alice in Wonderland with a big sword and axe that I couldn't NOT print and paint up.

Was just in a local store today and noticed the DnD dungeon board games for 1-5 players think there is potential here. * minis leave a lot of bits... maybe add more kits intended to reuse certain leftovers etc. * kits that are not modular for common npc or less modular for monsters. Think old, modular kits from GW with upper-, lower body, heads etc so you can slowly collect and build a horde of . * Add rules for DnD board games. Maybe pnline as PDF? QR code? Make this an option for "dungeon runners" and light RPG players. * Tie them nicely into the latest DnD version and five players reason to use them. * Of course, kits for famouse DnD characters. I'd collect and build Drizzt party just for fun (and other famouse heroes, bosses and monsters from my childhood). A way to reac older players?

yeah the mold lines on Nolzurs and the bendy weapons are the main reasons I stay with reaper or 3d printing. That and I remember as a young dm going into my store and the aisles upon aisles of reaper minis racked to the ceiling, and flipping through them to find something appropriate. Sadly there isn't something like that where I live now.
@Sgt40K

You can fix bendy weapons by dipping them in hot water or using a hair dryer, the dipping them in cold water while straightening the part.

I definitely rec looking at reaper bones black & bones USA. They've solved most of the problems with PVC...still no plastic glue, but bendiness is gone and mold lines way easier to clean. Yet, still very durable.

I'm a DM and I can't do a campaign until every mini is painted, every monster, all terrain, all of it. I love it more than actually playing at this point. I hadn't played in a decade. I was asked to DM by a friend. I was going to fork over the cash for prepainted minis and the price was a no go. Four 3d printers later and now dming 3x a week. its almost a job at this point. But I'm glad I got back into it, since it sucked my wife and kids into it. Which in turn sucked their friends amd their parents into it. I'll never look back. But it did cause an itch to war game, so if I could find the time to paint my dominion box that would be great... 🍻

Great video as ever! The minis are cool and the customisation options seem pretty good. A little pricey for the monsters for the exact reasons you stated in the video. The most promising thing I think I heard in this video was the lack of embargo or NDA. A positive change that the industry as a whole really need to shift towards. Good PR is sorely needed with some of these companies.
