My favorite character is the lady on the parole board who goes "oh, Jarnathan!" That delivery always makes me chuckle.

Her name is Jil Torbo, she is a halfling like Holga's ex husband Marlamin (the short guy played by Bradley Cooper). Halflings are commonly known as "hobbits" in the Lord of the Rings franchise, so basically Jil and Marlamin are the same race as Frodo and Bilbo Baggins.

Explaining the question about Zia (Edgin's wife): in D&D there is afterlife and it's actually tangible (with certain spells like Plane Shift even the living can travel there). There are so-called Outer Planes. Depending on character's Alignment their soul ends up in the correspondent Outer Plane when they die. Those include various ideas for afterlife throughout many different cultures: there's Christian/Dantesque Seven Heavens, Limbo and Nine Hells; Classic Olympus, Elysium, Tartarus and Hades; Buddhist Nirvana, Norse Asgard, etc. Zia, as a kind and gentle person was definitely Good aligned. I would assume Neutral or Chaotic Good to be married to Edgin (himself a Chaotic Good character). So her afterlife destination would probably be Elysium, Beastlands, or Arborea. With her connection to dragonflies (a dragonfly appears many times over the movie whenever Zia is referenced) my bet is on Beastlands, as the name reveals, a realm of all manner of animal spirits as well as many wilderness deities and souls of people who lived close to nature (many good druids and rangers end up in Beastlands after death). So yes, Xenk was right in a way, bringing her back would take her soul from the afterlife (again, presumably Beastlands) back to Prime Material Plane were she willing (as per rules of resurrection spell the soul has to be willing to come back). The appearance of dragonfly moments before Edgin's decision was Zia's message letting him know she's happy in the afterlife and that she approves of bringing Holga back instead of her.

To answer your question about the wife living her "new life", people absolutely have souls in D&D, and when you die your soul can pass on to one of many "planes of existence." So she could definitely be living a new life, but not in a reincarnation sense.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 The D&D cosmology is not a single universe, it is a multiverse. Without going into too much detail it is organized like this: - the Elemental Planes like the Plane of Earth or the Plane of Fire, also known as the Inner Planes, which are basically the foundation of reality - the Etherial Plane which connects the Inner Plane to the Prime Material Plane, also known as one of the transitional planes - the Prime Material Plane, which is basically the "normal" universe with stars, planets, star systems, galaxies and the like - the Astral Plane, connecting the Prime Material to the Outer Planes; the other transitional plane - the Outer Planes which each represent a specific alignment (like Lawful Good or Chaoric Evil). In addition there's a huge amount of so-called demi-planes which are usually located within the Etherial Plane. Next important thing to know is that gods exist in the D&D cosmology not only as abstracts but as very real, active beings. Each god has their own realm located somewhere in the cosmology listed above (be it as a demi-plane, secluded part of one of the actual planes etc). People who where devoted followers of a specific god usually end up in the realm of their god after their death. People who don't end in a specific god's domain usually travel to the plane that represents their alignment (which means all souls not travelling to a god's realm travel to the Outer Plains). To understand this you need to know the alignment system of D&D. The alignments are made of two parts: One is the morality aspect of Good, Neutrality (as in neither good nor evil) or Evil; the other one is Law, Neutrality (as in balancing order and Chaos) and Chaos. This means there are 9 alignments in total. So a Chaotic Evil soul would travel to the plane representing that alignment: The Abyss. A Lawfull Evil soul would travel to the plane representing that alignment: The Nine Hells etc.

Oh, as to your sequel question: The world that this is set in is called the Forgotten Realms. It's had adventuring material written for it for 50 years. There are many many series of novels and game modules that could be seeds for future stories. I think that's what the D&D brand people would love to see a series based on. And note that the folks behind Vox Machina have a TV and Movie deal set up with Amazon, and so that's still a D&D world, but it's the setting of Exandria. The main D&D people have other settings that may become properties as well. There's a great series of books called Dragonlance that some people are trying to get made. There are just a lot of settings that have a lot of history to pull from for good story ideas... Anyway, that's what we can look forward to if they found this profitable enough.

in dungeons and dragons there are a number of resurrection style spells, most require expensive regents like diamonds, but there is always a limit to time since death or special cases where lower level resurrection type spells won't work in the case of the red wizard's dagger, which required a much higher level spell overcome it's effects. There is also a spell called reincarnation If I remember right which has less restrictions but the person's soul randomly finds itself in a totally new body.

At the beginning, the dragonborn on the council actually said, "But we approved your pardon!" Meaning that if they had waited to hear the results before attempting a risky escape plan, they'd have known it wasn't necessary... which is like 50% of D&D players when they plan before the DM gives them key info 😂 The panther thing in the maze was a displacer beast. In the game, their ability to project an illusion of themselves in a different location translates to them being *much* harder than normal to hit. Like... frustratingly harder. It doesn't matter how strong your attacks are if 75% of them miss 😑Can you tell I've had a bad encounter with them before? 😂 As far as I'm aware, most D&D settings don't have a concept of reincarnation per se. But they usually have an afterlife that the spirit passes onto after death, which is what I think Xenk was referring to.

The whole “liches run the place” tends to mean you get a whole bunch of more creative atrocities like that horn getting brainstormed all the time. I mean if your going to kill the slave to make them a soulless husk anyway; why not scoop out the soul first to use? So many possibilities as long as you don’t mind the screaming. Or enjoy the screaming. Needless to say anywhere else on Faerun Thay is considered a PROBLEM.

Doric's owlbear beatdown at the end resembling the Hulk beating up on Loki was intentional. I can't remember the guy's name, but one of the producers on this movie had worked on MCU projects for a while, so the directors put that moment in as a little wink to him. As a longtime D&D player, I loved this movie. One of the things I think it did best was incorporating so much lore from the game while still making it very accessible to non-players. The 2000 D&D movie was basically just a generic fantasy movie with the D&D name slapped on it. I love that we got a bunch of monsters straight out of the game, including my all-time favorite the Displacer Beast. Probably the biggest deviation from the "rules" was Doric's shapeshifting, they gave her more flexibility with it. But all the "hardcore" players who got butthurt about that can go pound sand, because Doric was great, and that whole escape sequence from the castle was AWESOME. :)

To answer the afterlife question, in D&D "standard" realms there's a very extensive and well-mapped multiverse theory with a very well-known afterlife process both to players/Dungeon Masters and for the people living in those worlds as well. Anyone in those worlds that's dedicated any amount of time at all reading arcane, religious, or even historical manuscripts in those worlds will know fairly well as well-trodden fact what awaits them. This is due to that people go back and forth from there all the time. Resurrections, while not common, exist, as well as planar travel between the planes of the normal world and roughly two dozen other planes of good, evil, and in between, many of which are destinations for the afterlife depending on the soul in question. Powerful adventurers, archmages, and religious champions consistently travel between these planes and interact directly with the deities and demideities that rule those realms and the souls of the dead found and communicated with as well. In short, it's not even a religious or philosophical question about his wife's new life in the afterlife, it's just a fact of reality. Like talking about life as an adult after graduating school.

@BigGator5 Год назад
"You are terrible!" "I can be a bit naughty..." Fun Fact: Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello makes a cameo during the Arena sequence. What Script Fact: Regé-Jean Page improvised the scene where Xenk steps right over the boulder, barely even breaking his stride. Chris Pine then improvised the resulting narration. Lost In Adaptation: Druid Doric (Sophia Lillis) repeatedly turns into an Owlbear, which appears to be her favorite form for fighting. According to the current official rules of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game, a druid cannot turn into an Owlbear. A druid can in fact only turn into a Beast (and eventually an Elemental), but the Owlbear is classified among the "Monstrosities" and a druid character cannot take the shape of those particular creatures. Game Accurate Fact: The movie is set in the Forgotten Realms setting. All the spells used in the film, while largely unnamed, are all legitimate spells used in the Dungeons & Dragons. The overweight red dragon the party encounters in the Underdark is Themberchaud, a known powerful denizen of the Underdark. In an overhead shot as Edgin (Chris Pine) and Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) walk through town, you can see two rust monsters fighting over a scrap of metal, which serves as food for this species. The prison Edgin and Holga escape from is Revel's End. A prison built on a cliff-side overlooking the Sea of Moving Ice in the Frozenfar region of the North.

In the DnD settings basically every form of afterlife exists among the outer planes. When a mortal dies their soul is drawn into one of those realms (typically determined by whatever their faith/culture dictated but lacking that based on their moral alignment) where they assume a life that fits them. Some bond with the plane, some remain spirits drifting through the plane for eternity, some gain new bodies and live lives according to where they end up. So bringing someone back to life robs them of whatever afterlife they've earned for themselves which can be devastating especially for one whose been dead long enough to really adjust to their new lives.

15:32 For reference, all dragons in DnD have different breath weapons; gold and red dragons like Themberchaud breathe fire (or flammable gas in his case since he's probably way too out of shape to breathe fire naturally), while copper and black dragons like Rakor basically just vomit acid. Others include burping out poison gas for green dragons, while blue and bronze breathe lightning, and silver and white breathe pure freezing cold. 26:56 That would be a Displacer Beast: they have innate magic that allows them to cast illusory holograms of themselves, making them appear to be about a meter away from where they actually are - they're basically the best ambush predators in DnD.

there is an afterlife in D&D, several different planes of it, so he's asking Edgin if it's a good idea to pull her from where she has been after all this time. if she was good, which it seems like she was, she mayyy have gone to Celestia - kind of D&D heaven, and it's pretty epic there. As a player you can get to these planes while still living in the same way Greek heroes can travel to the heavens or the underworld in those old epic tales. It's usually a rather difficult feat. I've had a character that went to both the Abyss and Celestia as part of a universe-saving quest. Anyway, I think that's what Zenk is saying, if she's in Celestia, do you really want to bring her back here from peace and paradise? Having said that, D&D does have both the concept of resurrection and reincarnation, typically a result of either magical or divine intervention (i.e. there are spells that can do both of those things, they are typically high level and almost always rather costly, but also a deity could make either happen - aka the DM using a deity to do something in the narrative). And in the in-world canon of Faerun, some believe that reincarnation may happen naturally after a time.

Went to see this with a buddy of mine who got me into D&D, had ourselves a little game of determining what subclasses and whatnot each character had. - Edgin doesn't do much barding in the way of spells, and by his own admission, he "makes plans." So we both came up with the idea that Edgin isn't really a Bard, he's a Mastermind Rogue pretending to be a Bard! - We decided Holga was a Berserker Barbarian (none of the other subclasses seemed to really click with her) and with the frequency she uses improvised weapons in a fight, she definitely has the Tavern Brawler feat. - Simon's a Wild Magic Sorcerer. Pretty sure this was said and demonstrated in the movie. Not much else to say. - Doric has to be a Circle of the Moon Druid, considering she's pretty much reliant on her Wild Shape to turn into an owlbear and mess people up. Circle of the Moon is the subclass you want for shapeshifting shenanigans. - Xenk's a Paladin, for certain. He's straight-laced and loves justice (so pretty typical for your average Paladin), and we ended up deciding on Oath of Devotion since that particular Oath is standard for your "knight in shining armour"-style Paladins.

I mean, I agree that Doric is a Moon Druid, but something I've seen and heard a lot of people get wrong is something you got wrong too: In 5e, which I believe this movie is supposed to base it's rules of magic on, Owlbears aren't covered under Wild Shape. Wild Shape let's you turn into creature under the category of "Beast". Owlbears, in 5e, are "Monstrosities". A Druid could Shapechange into one, sure, but...not Wild Shape. I love this movie, it feels exactly as a campaign with your friends and that is something I really cherish If I were to find something I don't like it would be the fact that they did non-humanoid races with costumes instead of CGI. Otherwise? Absolutely stellar. A couple of notes: -the pudgy dragon is Themberchaud; basically the dueregar (dark dwarves) periodically kidnap a red dragon hatchling and they keep it fed and trapped in their city as a living fuel for their furnaces, only to kill it before it grows too powerful to control... obviously Themberchaud managed to escape that fate and the result is... well... a chubby adult red dragon that is as goofy in its movements as much as its tanky. -the panther is a displacer beast, a special kind of predator originally bred in the Feywild (the plane from whence most fey beings come from) as big game for cerimonial hunts and some managed to escape to the material plane. They are incredible hunters with the ability to, as you have seen, create a distortion in perception that causes 50% of the attacks directed at them to miss. The animals used in the Feywild to hunt them down are blink dogs.

When it comes to the afterlife in D&D, specifically the Forgotten Realms where this movie is set, there are a lot of different kinds of afterlives. Most often a soul is drawn to the realm of the god someone worshiped in life or the plane of existence that most aligns with the life they lived. Most commonly a person will go to one of the Celestial (heavenly) planes if they led a good life and either the Nine Hells or the Abyss if they led an evil life. Exceptional souls might even eventually become new angels, demons, or devils. So Xenk, being a paladin or holy warrior, would be especially cautious about pulling a soul away from their afterlife after so much time had passed. Hope this helps! I love all your reaction videos but your D&D content is always among my favorite. I can't wait for season 3 of Vox Machia!

I don't know if anyone's said it or not but the panther creature was a displacer beast. as far as I know, they're pretty nasty but I don't think they use their tentacle-like appendages for the illusion they create by bending light. I remember something about special nerves somewhere on the body. or maybe this was a different type of displacer beast. I welcome being proved wrong.

To answer your question about death in the D&D universe: The world exists in the "prime material plane". This is where mortals are born, live, and die. That plane or realm is surrounded by other inner planes (the elements, shadow, the feywild, etc.) and many many outer planes (heavens and hells.) Each of the outer planes are tied to alignments: good or evil, lawful or chaotic, and the combinations. These other planes have residents of their own, like elementals, angels, demons, etc. That's the general setup of most worlds. Then, depending on the specifics of the setting, you die, your spirit gets judged, and goes to the outer plane where the spirit belongs - to be rewarded in a heavenly place with angels or sent to... a darker place where your spirit fits in to be tortured (or rewarded) as appropriate. When someone does a raise dead, resurrection, or reincarnation spell the soul is called back from that outer plane and put in a reconstructed body. So if she's in her eternal reward, she might not want to come back. Other note: The soul knows who is trying to bring it back, so evil people can't revive good people to torture them, they can just decline and stay out there. Last note: There's a revivify spell that can raise someone from the dead, but only in the first minute after death. (As seen on Vox Machina.) That's trying to get them before they get judged. To all my fellow nerds, I know that's a very quick and dirty version, but I bet it's already too long for the usual watcher. 🙂

Every monster seen is in fact something you can find in D&D, heck I'm sure the fish that ate that baby has a stat sheet somewhere, and someone more crazy than I has probably already identified each of the spells used by every character in this movie. Basically with D&D all you have to know is that if you think "I wonder if someone has made mechanics for that to be playable in the game" the answer is yes, yes they have. Also 17:17 Thats what we call Lich Ugly, for wizards to get their undead powers they gotta be smack by every branch on the way down to lichdom. Honestly it's on Thay for letting what so clearly a Lich help rule their government, but thats Wizard Hubris™ for ya

D&D is my Special Interest I run it constantly for friends and family and I absolutely adore this film. I've always imagined living in the Forgotten Realms (the D&D setting the movie takes place in) and I love reading the novels set there too, Drizzt series being probably my favorite. This movie absolutely nailed the setting while also making a really good fantasy adventure anyone could sit down and love! Also to promote the film they released a free adventure from one of their (at-the-time) upcoming books that is basically a prison break heist set in the prison at the beginning of this movie, Revel's End. I ran it for my sister, my partner and their sister before the movie came out and now we play regularly on Mondays xD (in our version of Revel's End, due to improv shenanigans, there's a chef with an Italian accent who serves pizza in the mess hall so at least the prisoners get nice dinner xD) Also our game is set seven-ish years before the movie so in our last session I put Hugh Grant's Forge in the casino the party is stealing from. He's there to win what they are stealing through cheating at the game itself so he's gonna be a rival x3c

Thanks for the vid. I liked the movie. note; You two are great reactors, content streamers, and top-tier for relationship goals. You enjoy what you do, you love and enjoy each other's company and it shows. I say that because I've noticed a lot of couples reaction channels over the years and most feel like one REALLY doesn't want to be there. Giving off the vibe that they're trying to pay attention and want to get it over with, but their partner talks way too much, pauses constantly, and/or talks over them when they do try to comment on what they're watching and they're trying hard but fail to not let it show that they're not enjoying any of it. I've never seen or felt that vibe from you two and your vids are always enjoyable. You're great. You deserve all the things. Much love and enjoy your weekend.

So I think what was meant with the Mother is in the Forgotten Realms the gods are very real, kind of like the Greek gods. Only they each have their own dimension where they rule. So if she was a good person, I believe the cosmology says her spirit would go to a paradise like heavenly realm. Neutral people go to the realm of the God of Death and stay there, and bad people go to the Hells. Well everyone gets judged by the God of Death, but you kind of get sorted and sent to other places. So while resurrection is possible you are potentially ripping them out of paradise to bring them back, I think that's all the guy was saving. :)

In the worlds of DND and Pathfinder there is the concept of the cycle of reincarnation. the souls that die go to one of the 9 after lifes based on alignment. after a certain set of time, souls get cleansed of their past selves and return as new people.

Worth noting that as Vox Machina's setting was made up by Matt Mercer and they changed any D&D references just enough to avoid copyright (so monsters, gods, the names of spells etc.) for the show then Hasbro (who own D&D) don't see any of the money from that, so they may be more likely to try and force an ongoing franchise out of this movie (or just D&D in general) so they can get in on the interest in this sort of thing while it's there. They're currently trying to wring as much money out of D&D (the game) as possible since their other businesses aren't doing so hot recently...

With regard to Edgin's wife, the world of the forgotten realms is known as a the material plane, but there are others, the inner planes of energy and elements, the outer planes of belief and ideology. When you die in this world your spirit goes to join your god or at least your most closely aligned belief, as represented on the outer planes. Its a thing in the game that yes you can cast resurrection, but the spirit you are trying to bring back to the material plane may decide not to come and prefer to stay where it is.

A little feedback; I do think you need to change your editing for movie reactions in a way so that it can show more of a reaction from you as opposed to just trying to show little clips of the plot playing out. People who watch the video likely have already seen the movie so we would rather see specific moments that would give a good reaction, than lots of little snippets that seemingly cause no reaction other than a smirk.
