We've had THREE other D&D movies before this of wildly varying quality. Is the fourth time the charm? Will we get a movie that pays respect to the game and the gamers who love this franchise?

Leading up to the movie's release, they got the actors together for a campaign as their characters. Chris Pine, apparently, kept trying to use animal friendship on everything. From the sound of it, they had a lot of fun, and both Pine and Michelle Rodriguez praised the game for inspiring creativity, camaraderie and problem solving.

Yep. And Michelle Rodriguez had even started playing D&D as a teenager. She gravitates toward action movie roles because she's genuinely a geek about this stuff.

The intro scene where they plead for their pardons is a perfect representation of a party being fully committed to their plan and executing it before the DM has a chance to tell them that their bard passed his charisma check.

I like to imagine Xenk is a joke NPC who appears in all of this group's campaigns, always super overpowered but never actually DOING much. (The most significant thing he actually does in this movie is saving Edgin from the dragon.) And when the party talks about the stories they've heard of him, they're actually referencing previous campaigns. I also like the idea that the botched heist from Edgin's backstory is the previous campaign that fell apart, which is why everyone already has established characters, except Doric's player who was Forge in the original campaign.

"Okay, so let's do some brainstorming. I'm thinking this campaign will take place two years after the previous campaign ended." "Ended? It dissolved before we could get to the Korrin's Keep heist." "Well, yeah, but it's been a while for us, so it makes more sense to start after a time skip. Sophia, since you said you wanted to play a druid now, Forge will be an NPC for this game; you might encounter him at some point." "Cool. Did you get that text I sent about the stuff I wanted to do with my Wildshape?" "It was a long message, but I think we can wing it. Chris, Michelle, where are Edgin and Holga now that it's been two years since we saw them last?" (unison) "In jail."

Xenk's the DM's PC from a campaign he played 10 years ago before he got stuck being the forever DM and gets shoehorned in to every game now so that the DM can have a little fun styling on the player's PCs. That's why Xenk is the one giving Simon the Rocks Fall Stare when he instantly rolls a 1 on interacting with the bridge puzzle and ruins it.

The pudgy dragon Themberchaud is actually a lore character from Forgotten Realms. He was kept by the duergar to heat their forges and they would supply him with copious amounts of people to eat to the point where he got extra fat and lazy since all he had to do was keep their forges lit. Also I'm fairly certain the Holga had the Tavern Brawler feat due to how many improvised weapons she used.

I really like how this movie portrayed different moments in gaming. One that stands out to me is during the "Speak With Dead" scene, one of the dead-speakers mentions the Paladin Zenk and that he's who they need to find. Edgin clearly doesn't "roll well" on his History or Religion, or basic Intelligence check. But the other three do when Simon speaks up and delivers more information about him, and then Doric chimes in with something and then after a little more conversation with Edgin, even Holga goes "Yeah, I heard of him." It's just a very "everyone but me passed their check" moment.

In 3rd/3.5 there was a feat, Magical Beast Wild shape, would let Druids turn into said creatures, aka owlbears and the like. Doric turning into one was a throwback to older work. Depeding on the edition that's either level 21 (in 3.5) or 20 (5e). Wild shaping into a magical beast (the owlbear) is an epic level ability. They also completely ignore that Druids are full spellcasters themselves which means that even without her wildshape Doric would be able to hold her own against Sofina. Don't get me wrong, I love that scene in the movie, but when looking at the rules Doric is an epic level character without question. Only one of the characters is believable as being around level 5 - Edgin. Even Holga is way too powerfull for such a low level considering how many trained guards she takes down all by herself without having any difficulties. I'd say she's at least level 10. And Simon - as I said before: He casts either Bigby's Grasping Hand or Bigby's Crushing Hand. Assuming it's the weaker Grasping Hand he still has to be level 14 to have access to that spell.

@@HH-hd7nd One, I think the screenwriters' focus in the movie was more on giving cameos to cool stuff in D&D, whether it's spells or character races or creatures. They used a lower-level party so they can be underdogs in the story, but it seemed like they still wanted to show the coll stuff that could be done in D&D. Two, they weren't sticking strictly to 5th edition because WotC was trying to test a new edition while the movie was being made. Why adhere strictly to one edition if those rules could be obsolete by the time the movie comes out? It didn't turn out that way, but the people making the movie didn't know that.

@@my_randomology surely. But the games and books are more serious, so while I loved the movie, it felt a little weird all the humor. I thought table top players wouldn't like it, but it seems all the laughter is normal in games and I am glad everyone enjoyed it. Usually when shown in movies or tv it's also very serious. Like Stranger Things I remember playing only once a table top AD&D game session. And I remember laughing a lot. The DM was not very experienced, but there was this sand monster and nobody could defeat it, and a player said he took his dick out and pissed at the monster... And the monster ripped his dick off. I remember people almost died in real life from lack of air because of the laughs...

I didn't care so much for the movie for some reason. That said, I never tried playing any PnP games with a DM and that might be a good reason why. I did read a lot of D&D books (Dragonlance Chronicles being my favorite) and played CRPGs like AD&D Gold Box, Baldur's Gate, Dark Sun 1&2, Icewind Dale, NWN, etc, so I could catch a good number of the references yet I never had the official PnP exprience with other people which might be a key thing I'm missing to relate to the tone of the film and the goofy nature of the characters. The film came across to me as almost "pure comedy" rather than an adventure with some comedy thrown in. The protags came across to me as have very thick plot armor with lots of absurd ways of being saved at the last minute which made it so there wasn't a single moment where I really worried about their fate, and there were so many jokes thrown seconds before or after emotional scenes that I didn't really feel moved by them. For example, Edwin's initial backstory in the beginning which builds his ultimate character motives and emotional heart of the film didn't move me much at all when his wife died, since there were jokes seconds before and after with him deliberately fumbling and stalling his story. So the only effect it had on me was like, "Okay, so this is what motivates this character," along with a few chuckles. Then his multiple flashbacks later on dreaming and remembering his wife had little sentimental effect on me since I wasn't really moved in the first place by the loss of his wife. All of this is normally something I find okay in a pure comedy if it's making me laugh a lot, but the humor in this film didn't seem to be my cup of tea so much. All I got were some chuckles here and there. I did really enjoy the graveyard scene; that was probably my favorite! It was also amusing to me to see Helga's halfling ex-husband, but I didn't really find enough build-up of Helga to find that scene nearly as funny as I think it could have been.

That's fair. I will say as someone who's been gaming for years, this is EXACTLY what a TTRPG is like behind the scenes. I can almost hear the player conversations as all this is going on.
@darkengine5931
@darkengine5931 11 месяцев назад
@@my_randomology That seems to be something many of the fans pointed out as the film capturing very well and a blind spot of mine! I think a lot of the things I perceived as contrivances in plot and character seemed to resonate deeply with people who have actually played TTRPGs. If I ever get the chance to play one with other people, I might have to revisit the film and see how my perceptions change after such an experience. What I always dreamed of seeing one day starting from childhood is a fairly serious take on a D&D campaign as with the case of many of the books as with the case of films and shows like LOTR, Willow (just the film), Dragonslayer, John Carter (actually think that film is way underrated for fantasy funs), Games of Thrones, HotD, etc. The closest to what I dreamed about seeing as a boy reading the books and playing the computer games was a 13-episode anime called Record of Lodoss War even though it wasn't based on D&D rules. In particular, I'd love to see films or shows based on Dark Sun (my favorite of the D&D worlds)!

@@my_randomology I love that Dying Earth meets Swords and Sandals Barbarians type of aesthetic to it. Just about everyone seems to require street smarts as well as a physique that's totally ripped if not totally jacked, both men and women alike, and even merchants and scholars given the harsh nature of surviving in such a dangerous and cutthroat world. Also love how metals have become scarce requiring people to use much more primitive armor and weapons forged from the like of bone, obsidian, and giant insect carapaces. In particular, I think it might be dull to some people, but I love how uniformly the inhabitants of the world look and behave given how much they largely had to uniformly evolve against the most brutal environmental selective pressures of the desert. It somewhat minimizes the variety of things we can see in the world and makes the whole world feel smaller compared to far more varied ones like Forgotten Realms or Mystara, but I think it creates the most striking and memorable aesthetic in exchange. Like the humanoid races in Dark Sun don't see so apart between the likes of human, giant, elf, and mul, with the exception of the likes of thri-kreen and halflings who evolved and developed their cultures more in isolation from the others. Might be very subjective but I think when there's actually less pronounced diversity between the characters, I believe it has a tendency to force writers to come up with more nuanced and profound differences between characters. For example, the Klingons were my favorite race in Star Trek: TNG since even though they're so culturally homogeneous with so much in common shared in attitudes and behavior between Worf, K'Ehleyr, Martok, Kahless, Duras, Gowron, Kurn, etc, I think the uniformity actually helps me to notice even more how they're so uniquely different from one another. Establishing a conforming pattern can make us more alert to any deviations to the pattern, like the slightest dissonance in music that establishes a pattern of functional harmony. It also reduces the need for nearly as much cultural exposition to begin understanding the characters. The audience gets to understand more of Klingon culture from every Klingon character they meet while simultaneously getting to know what makes that Klingon very unique in personality. Meanwhile if we were to try to describe the differences between a Klingon character and a Vulcan character, we'd have to likely begin by describing in large part the broad cultural differences between the two before we can really drill down to the most individualistic differences between the two. So apologies for rambliness but I think less diversity in a world actually helps us focus on more nuanced, individualistic differences than the likes of human vs. elf, elf vs. dwarf, Klingons vs. Ferengi, etc, without having to spend nearly as much time focusing on their broad cultural differences. I think that's one of the reasons why I love Dark Sun so much!

One of the greatest things D&D did in the last 20 years was make it so paladins did NOT have to be Lawful Good. You can have a cause that covers the entire alignment spectrum.
