Dunster, a charming medieval village situated near Minehead in the heart of the Exmoor National Park in Somerset, England, is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience a rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Here are some reasons why you should consider visiting Dunster:
History: Dunster boasts a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086. Its most prominent landmark is Dunster Castle, a 1,000-year-old fortress that has been owned by the Luttrell family for over six centuries. Visitors can tour the castle's grand rooms, gardens, and stables and learn about the castle's fascinating history, including its use as a Civil War garrison and a Victorian country house.
Architecture: The village of Dunster is filled with stunning architecture, including thatched cottages, ancient churches, and historic marketplaces. St George's Church, which dates back to the 15th century, features a rare wooden carving of the Last Supper and a magnificent octagonal tower. The Yarn Market, built in the 17th century, was once a bustling marketplace for wool merchants and is now a popular tourist attraction.
Natural Beauty: Dunster is nestled in the heart of the Exmoor National Park, offering visitors stunning views of rolling hills, sweeping moors, and lush forests. Visitors can explore the park's rugged terrain by hiking, cycling, or horseback riding. The village itself is also home to the Dunster Deer Park, a picturesque 40-acre parkland with a herd of over 200 fallow deer.
Cultural Events: Dunster hosts a variety of cultural events throughout the year, including the Dunster by Candlelight festival in December, which transforms the village into a magical wonderland of candlelit streets, live music, and festive cheer. The village also hosts a variety of traditional country fairs, including the Dunster Country Fair and the Dunster Show.
Local Food and Drink: Dunster is known for its delicious local cuisine, including Exmoor beef, fresh seafood, and scrumptious cream teas. Visitors can sample local delicacies at the village's many pubs, cafes, and restaurants, including the historic Luttrell Arms Hotel, which dates back to the 15th century and features a cozy bar and restaurant serving traditional British fare.
In summary, Dunster is a beautiful and historic village that offers visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. With its stunning architecture, rich history, breathtaking scenery, and delicious local food, Dunster is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the best that England has to offer.
In this video we visit Dunster Somerset and explore the High Street, West Street and notable landmarks like the Medieval Yarn Market, Dunster Castle, the Memorial Hall which houses Dunster museum and the Doll Collection and more.

Dunster is LUSH!!! I have very fond memories of spending the day in Dunster with a Lovely, Lovely Lady, exploring the village and then the Castle and it's beautiful grounds. Chatting to a Guy who was working the river flow into the water mill and then sitting on a bench, overlooking the Channel towards Wales, surrounded by lush vegetation and greenery; It really is a place to reflect and enjoy the peace with a beautiful Person. Oh! And Dunster also appeared in an episode of Agatha Christies Poirot....Poirot was staying at The Luttrell Arms and there are many shots of the Yarn Market and also the Castle.

Thank you for this video. Like you, I drove through Dunster on my way to Minehead and then made a point to visit. Sadly it was the height of summer a few years ago. It was heaving with people so we missed seeing a lot of things. We did stop at The Deli for locally made cheese and cider. Bought some beautiful hand made birds by a local artist that go on my Christmas tree every year. And unfortunately got booted out of the doll museum by a really nasty woman who worked there. She complained that my small dog might put his nose on the display glass (even though I was carrying him) she said nothing to the couple with three children eating ice cream and getting their sticky fingers on everything. When I pointed this out she told us we must leave and not return as she didn't like argumentative people! Despite that Dunster is a beautiful village. I think you definitely picked the right time to visit.

I spend a great deal of time on Exmoor so it was nice to see a familiar place. If you find yourself there again I would suggest heading down the first no through road you passed on West Street; there is still a working water mill there and they make artisan bread. The second no through road just after the Foresters Arms takes you to Gallox Bridge (and ford), it's a medieval stone bridge which leads to some lovely woodland walks. I can also recommend some even prettier villages than Dunster including Dulverton, Porlock, Allerford, West Luccombe, Winsford and Selworthy. All picture postcard places 😁

There are beautiful views from the top of the castle. I went up there in 1984. You can see the Bristol Channel on a clear day and (perhaps) even the Welsh coast? Also a visit to the Gallox Bridge, Mill Stream, and Rose Cottage are a must (all in the same area past the Foresters Arms. There are great views of the sea and the back of the castle from the Gallox Bridge.

Great place for a holiday and a good base for exploring Exmoor, and if you are into Heritage Railways Dunster has a station on the West Somerset Railway, bit of a walk involved though, down the hill under the main road (subway) follow the footpath look for the signs for Dunster beach. The Luttrell arms is well worth a visit or two as is the Foresters Arms (Look out for the cheeky Parrot). Great video.

Couple years ago, we spent a couple nights at The Luttrell Arms. Miss it. One of these little shops sells hand made gin! A wonderful one!

13:22 that building is called the old nunnery and dates from the 15th century. Lovelly village, lucky to ride through on my motorbike when visiting family in Devon. The church has an interesting medieval storage box with about 5 locks to which each person had a key and had to be present to unlock it, i think it contained vestments or something.

As noted in my "AA Touring Guide to England" 1975 edition, it is "the fine, shingled Nunnery House" at 12:45 in the video. Late 14th or early 15th Century. Lovely town!

I think that you should go back there to film the features that @NewHeathen highlighted. Plus the Dovecote and of course the castle exterior and grounds which are free to explore. It's almost as if you purposely decided to ignore the features that make Dunster so popular. Go on. Give it a go and return. Film the steam trains from the castle. Film the castle from the main road . I haven't got the ability but you have so please do it again or just add the features that you missed.

This was my first time to Dunster so I didnt' really know my way around. The way I film places is to go for the first time, film a quick wander, and then post it and get feedback and tips and hints for the next time.

@@GimbalWalkTV Wonderful. So please do as you suggest and return for such as I who is now old. I have taken many slides but they do not compare with the quality of film that is available to people younger than I. I spend many hours reminiscing watching films such as yours. Guess what I found by taking photos? It forces one to observe much more closely what one captures. Your comments show that you have researched Dunster very thoroughly so if you seek out the places highlighted in you description it will increase the pleasure of those who subscribe. Best wishes.
