In this episode, Drs. Ghanem and Teixeira discuss the difference between the Duodenal Switch and SADI bariatric procedures. Duodenal Switch is a popular restrictive and malabsorptive procedure that has been performed for decades. It is particularly suited to patients with a BMI over 50.
The DS offers the greatest excess body weight loss potential of any major surgical procedure and represents an improvement over the gastric bypass in many ways.
The SADI or Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileostomy is a derivative single anastomosis version of the duodenal switch that offers negligibly lower weight loss, but still excellent long-term results with fewer potential postoperative complications due to one less anastomosis. The big difference between the two procedures is insurance coverage. The duodenal switch is covered by insurance while the SADI remains a cash pay option.

Thanks for an interesting video. I'm trying to decide between a traditional DS and the SADI-S. Can you please show me the studies that verify this comment that you made: "It is pretty well documented that patients have a loop switch have a much lower chance of having issues in vitamin deficiencies compared to a traditional." I'm not in the medical industry and am struggling to find that info. It does seem like it would make sense, but I just would love to see the data. Thanks!

This was really helpful, thank you for posting this. Any idea why the traditional DS ends up being better for sweets/carbs eaters than SADI?

Hi Stormy - both procedures should be the same. ~ Dr. T

I recently had a revision from Sleeve to SADI. My bmi is 41. I wanted him to do the traditional switch but he seemed to think SADI was best. Even with my high bmi I don’t have any health problems, don’t take any medications at all, but I need to loose 70 more pounds to be at normal weight. (I’m 5.4 and 240pds) So why wouldn’t my surgeon want to do the traditional on me.

Good morning, there is no difference on weight loss btw both. Even if higher BMi, but you do have less malnutrition issues with sadis

@@dr.andre.teixeira.bariatric Is there documentation to back up that malnutrition claim for DS vs. SADI?

@dr.andre.teixeira.bariatric

Does one surgery or the other have a greater resolution for type 2 diabetes, or is it about the same?
@dr.andre.teixeira.bariatric
Both similar resolution
