Beautiful work, and the sketch seems like a great idea, I have to try it! For the wash, I suggest you look up oil washes. They're INCREDIBLY superior to acrylic washes, with exceptional flow and can be easily corrected/cleaned since they remain pliable. It's a game changer, and very easy even for noobs like myself. If you're curious, Vince Venturella and Marco Frisoni both have videos about this technique.
It's never too late to start! I think searching for inspiration and references leads to better models over all; if we are trying to create lifelike miniatures, we should reference real life when we paint them.
Awesome job! Im painting mine these days, following your steps but with green/purple. I saw your pics on reddit, could you please tell me how did you do the wings (colors used, technique)? I love them! Congrats!
Fantastic work! Would you consider doing a video on airbrush technique? I don't think my airbrush is capable of doing fine work like that, so it gets relegated to a fancy way to apply primer and the occasional base coat.
Thank you! First, Duotone always takes longer. Second, me messing up added on several hours, since I had to redo so much. So considering those things, it took me 9 hours?
Lyla Mev Tamiya makes a panel liner enamel wash specifically for getting the thin recessed lines in things like gundams and space marine power armour. I think it just has extra surfactants and strong pigment to make a very dark wash with almost no surface tension that flows really well into the cracks and even flows on its own along cracks with capillary action. Oil washes are just thin oil paint but the benefit that you can use mineral spirits on a qtip to wipe away the wash from the raised areas and have a very slow dry time in which to manipulate the coverage
