@@RESURRECTEDDIESEL so what if my temp gauge never leaves 110 on a 2006 chevy kodiack c5500 crew can 6.6 -theres no over heating at all ever and i have plenty of hot heat and ac,i just can’t figure it out why it never leaves 100 barely,110 is extreme working it????
You make good valid points , however the Manufacturers do just enough to get themselves out the warrenty period , with that said abs transmissions should never run as hot as or hotter than the engine temp , keep in mind friction is a transmissions worst enemy and some what contributes to friction is the fluid temp , the cooler you can keep it the better the trans will perform and the longer it last , I typically like to my trans temps at least 30 to 40 degrees cooler than engine temp . I have seen fluid come out looking like the day it was put in after a 60k service severe duty . Been in the business for well over 40 years and 20 with dealerships , manufacturers aren’t making money if they can’t get you back as a cash pay customer .
With that said trans fluid starts to burn at between 190 and 200 degrees anything above 220 and you looking at failure so why in gods name would I want to run my trans fluid temp remotely close to engine temp .
Thank you thank you so much brother that means the world to me brother! You are a great dude an absolutely a huge inspiration to me man thanks for the shoutout buddy appreciate it!
If it doesn’t warm up after a few miles down the road I would definitely change the thermostats they could be stuck open for sure usually after about a minute of idling before I leave I get about 3-5 minutes down the road and I have heat blasting in the mornings
Pakawat Pimsaguan yes so do I the stop and go makes the heat rise a little bit I’m sure on the highway you see about 170-180 depending and that’s just fine
Thanks bro for the help. This goes a long way. Keep up the good work. I have a 2005 LLY dually after checking everything the shop said it was my wiring harness that was the problem.
Great video. Chevy gauges do suck. Just replaced my cluster not long ago. If you ever do. Be careful not to crack or break the old cluster. They will not exchange it for core.
I have a 04 lly 2500hd crew cab long bed I think it's 167 inch wheel base so it's a larger truck than most and I have road armor front and rear bumpers and I haul all my tools that being said mine runs between 188 and 194 at 75 and pulling a dump trailer loaded going up hill never got over 204
Ima look into those mishimoto thermostats I'm always towing heavy and always in the hills never bothered with high temps but I'm sure it will help even more 👍👍
What’s up. Good video with good amount of info. I just recently bought a 2004’lly with 250,000 miles Coolant comes out the reservoir when filled back up on mine. Truck doesn’t over heat and doesn’t have any mixing inside the oil. My heater works but it takes a while for it to get hot. Would you think it’s bad thermostats or blown heads?? Thanks man hope you can help or anyone on these comments section!
the cheap and easy fix would be to change the cap on the reservoir and see if it continues to happen and if it does they make combustion gas tester but because you constantly are adding new fluid it never really gets dirty to tell but if you drive the truck for the day and park it for the night, the next morning go out and open the hood before starting it and check if the upper radiator hose is still hard
Mark Ryl-Kuchar as long as your dash isn’t above 210 you’ll be fine especially if it’s hot out and you’re staying in the throttle a bit but if it never fluctuates I would look into new thermostats
Mine is heating up to 255 pulling up big hills with my horse trailer. As soon as I get to the top it’ll go back down to normal 210. Thermostat or fan clutch ?.
Good to know.. what would you do when your fan wants to run at 180 and all the way up to 210 and then stays on.. stop light to stop light but also be running when coming to a stop after being on the highway and swinging traffic lol.. where should I look?
Hey my brother recently got a lb7 duramax and he did an oil and filter change. Upon firing it up afterward it hit 120psi. After reaching operating temp it dropped but as hes driving it hits 90 psi at full throttle. Around 60 cruising. Its got a wix oil filter and mobil delvac 1300 super 15w40 full synthetic oil. Any suggestions on diagnosing the issue? Im not sure what his psi was before but it wasnt ever abnormally high.
I have an ‘01 and run fryer oil. It has a few extra gallons of coolant that runs through the tank to heat the oil so at first I had a problem getting it up to 180 so I put a grill cover and now it runs between 180 and 200. The last couple of times I’ve gone over the mountain pass (12,000ft) it way overheated. Can’t figure out why.
Great video for us new owners especially for the LLY. I’ve been paranoid about head gaskets since I got the truck. I’m in the middle of a water pump job right now because my old one was leaking from the weep hole and the flange for the oil cooler pipe. Never have coolant gushing and my upper hose was only firm once after towing my jetskis through the hills in 96 degree weather...hoping I’m ok
Got it finished up today, took my sweet time lol! So far no leaks and not blowing coolant or losing it. I think I have developed a sound similar to marbles rattling in a can which some people claim might be air in the system so I'll bleed it again tomorrow and see what happens
It's not air in the system. Some more research has led me to believe it's the gear on the pump itself not meshing correctly with the cam gear that drives it. Have you ever seen this or heard it? It's difficult to pin down because it's resonating throughout the engine.
I have not heard of that usually as long as the bolts are tight and it’s sealed to the block it’s on the gear. It’s a pretty tight tolerenece unless you got a junky pump. If you have Instagram add me and send me a video of it
One little trick is to turn your heater on I do this when I run into the mountains when I'm hauling any type of load but it is a temporary fix and it kind of sucks I am trying to figure out alternative ways to super-cool the truck 4 coolant air conditioning system for the engine I don't care I'm going to figure this out one way or another
Great information man! I have an Edge Insight and my lbz coolant temp has never been above 200 must be the mishimoto thermostats 196 is the hottest I’ve ever seen it. Keep the content coming your videos have helped a ton working on the truck.
5280 Jeff he’ll yeah another guy said the same thing with his edge I think the clusters are off but all the more reason 210 on the dash is fine but thank you glad I’m able to help!
Look into Triax oil 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 good stuff. Got the name from my fleet dept at work can go up to 70,000 between drains they did have the oil looked at and at 70,000 it was still in the green.
I called Allison trans, 100degrees above ambient is correct, therefore 200+ can be expected when towing heavy loads in 100+, BUT, if the trans never gets above 180 the life of the trans will be longer, I installed a forced air trans oil cooling system, up hill in 115 degrees at 4000 ft towing 17000 lbs, trans temp never got above 180 degrees, just saying.
@@volveras09 Derale duramax transmission cooling kit around $200, I went over board and had hydraulic lines made with the correct fittings to match the new kit and existing trans line, then added on/off switch for the fan motor, good luck.
Transmission on my 07 LBZ maintains a steady 150* and my thermostat at 75mph stays at the line before 210*, in town trans is the same and thermostat drops another line mark.
Is that at idle for the oil pressure cause if so that’s fine but for the coolant that seems a little low is that reading off the dash or do you have an edge monitor
DURAMAX_DIESEL that’s off the dash and the edge programmer. But when I pull a trailer with a couple lawn mowers on it, my coolant temp goes up to about 200 - 215
Hmmmm that’s different that’s really cool usually 180 is right about the lower side of things I’m not sure it’s a bad thing but the 210 about towing wouldn’t be concerning to me
Funny you post this video.. This past weekend I was driving up back to work(5hrs) and got a little raging on a Mercedes.. Well after about 4-5miles of flogging beyond what I should have, I finally noticed my dic going off at me saying low coolant&engine over heat.. fml. Pulled over and realized I had left the resavior cap too loose and so shut the truck off and added almost 5gal of water. Dear God I was pissed at myself. Had 30miles left to go, drove the rest of the way fine, haven't had opportunity to drive anymore but Jesus have I been concerned about it.
Jake Ashcraft that definitely is not good but it happens what year truck? Hopefully there’s no issues I would put some coolant in it out the cap on all the way and take it for a drive and see what happens if something weird happens feel free to hit me up!
Yeah man, I've definitely been trying to turn down all the dogging my truck so much. It's 07 so got the better gaskets but still worried me about the heat to heads. I picked up some dexcool and since driven it about 1k miles and it hasn't used any of the water so I'm thankfully gonna have to drain the water to add the coolant back. Thanks again for being welcoming to help my girlfriend when she drove it to Anaheim last year and got a random thermostat code! We'll have to have some beers whenever I make it out that way myself, if you're still there hah
Yes of course man always glad to lend a helping hand and maybe when I road trip home if I don’t see ya before then I’ll stop by! But glad the truck is working itself out hopefully no more issues for you!!
I have a 2007 duromax 6.6 with a flatbed instead of a regular bed I bought it used. And it started overheating when i go over 40-50mph but idling it doesn't overheat but it hits 275 and almost 300 on hwy? I need help fellas asap some tips please!!!!
I would check thermostats, there are two of them a cold one and a hot one, it is probably the high temp. the hot one is supposed to open at about 210 degrees, if it is stuck closed than that would explain overheating at speed. I replaced mine with a 190 degree one from XD. I also would check injectors, because if the nozzles are failing, than they will throw more fuel than the engine can handle and possibly melt a piston. I know because it happened to a truck I bought. Hope this helps!
Hahaha that’s definitely not a bad thing at all! Usually 100-120 degrees above ambient while towing is normal just depends how heavy and how hot it is out!
At approx 150k miles the injectors will need to be replaced, if you tow heavy, but, as a daily driver, not hauling, it will run great as long as you don’t tow heavy.
My 03 went just above 210 and I was towing my trailer in 100degree and I was thinking something might be wrong but thanks for the video, I’m pretty sure it was just weather and the load I had on the truck.
Hey I have a lb7 and it’s time for injectors I’m thinking about doing Head gaskets at the same time and studs my question is can I put head studs in with the motor in the truck I know that last head bolt closest to the fire wall is tight thanks bro
i have done head gaskets and studs while in the cab before! you can do it but it is really tight on the driver side. what i ended up having to do was set the head on the block without the studs installed then thread them down like bolts and then do the rest and i believe it was only the driver side! but can be done just have to get a little creative!
Take the transmission mount bolts to the cross memeber out and jack up the trans as to rotate the engine and the bolt or stud will clear the firewall fine.
I go to Walmart today and I asked them for 285 65 r16 and they tell me oh that will ruin your transmission and we don't want to get sued so we can't install that for you I said I've got the wheels I'll pull them off you just Mount them and that's what I'm talking about
I have a 2006 LLY towing 3 car trailer all the time through PA mountains and i reach 235 on hot days going up the hill. At 235 fan kicks in and goes down to 210 and starts again when going up the hill again. First it made me nervous but read truck manual and it said that its a normal temperature while heavy towing.
Yeah seems not too extremely hot especially if you had the ac on too I wouldn’t be surprised I’ve seen that with my truck unloaded driving up a super steep mountain with the ac on
It was an lbz motor with lly tuning in early 06 they called it an lly. It had the lbz motor 6 speed trans they just didn’t change the ecu yet and bam 06 lly!!
No I don’t really know the ins and outs but my guess is they knew the lly tunes worked they just changed up the motor a little bit have the same fuel injection system or similar enough that the lly tunes would work so that’s less work that gm has to do to get the next truck into production and once they started production they probably fine tuned it and officially made the lbz
What should you oil pressure run going down the road with converter locked up mine runs ab 40psi is that low or just me and I have 15:40 rotella and it has about 4K miles on oil
thats fine duramax are hvlp (high volume low pressure) pumps that dont require a crazy amount of pressure! maybe time for a change but as the rpms go up you should see a rise up and thats good!
My 04 LLY trans only ever sees 200-220 when towing with a large load for an extended period of time regular driving temp is 140 and then in the winter the trans temp guage dosent even get up high enough to move the guage.
Excellent review man👍🏾👍🏾but as for oil changes I go 30K miles or once per year which ever comes first with rotella triple t 15w40. I decided to send a sample of my 30k oil change to Blackstone labs and my results were good and the viscosity was the same but the lab report comments said I could have went another 4k miles. My truck has over 270k miles on it and going strong 👍🏾👍🏾as for the water temp GM temp gauge is not accurate, I have an edge CTS monitor hook up to the OBD port and that 160 * mark on the gm gauge is really 140* on my monitor and 210 is really 185
I completely agreee with you I know a lot more know then I did back then but it just shows that its in an okay operating range but 30k on an oil change is insane im glad its working for you though
My L B Z. 298000 miles. 30 psi hot no madder what brand of oil. Never been above 195 towing with 12,000 pounds behind in 90 degree weather from Wisconsin to Alabama. Heat kills A T F fluid. Simple ! Take your average temp. Look at a chart. It will tell you safe time it should be run.
That’s awesome but I agree the heat is what kills it for sure but yeah it’s usually about 80-100 degrees above ambient temperature from what I’ve seen and learned!
Sorry bud but I gotta call bullshit on the 195 max temp, in 90 deg. ambiente temp. pulling 12k. Either you’re always pulling downhill, you’ve added a BUNCH of trans cooling capacity, or you’re FULL OF SHIT!
Vortex Meltz are you going off the gauges or an edge monitor cause the reading in the guages are a little higher but if not that’s good it’s hot here in SoCal haha
what I mean by that is the larger the tires that you run and I'm talking about height-wise the better fuel economy you have this is just a little given secret that nobody freaking talks about and it really pisses me off
I have a 09 2500 HD Duramax that will not come up to temperature add an idle you have to drive down the highway about four or five miles before it pops up to running temp right around 210 on the gauge and then when you come to a stop and put the truck in park the temperature drops I replaced the thermostats last week thinking I had bad thermostats but it's still doing it what is the problem
My truck does the same thing as long as you aren’t getting the check engine light for the under temp code your fine duramaxs do a great job of cooling at idle if I ever repair one and need to bring it up to temp it takes usually about 20-30 minutes of idling and holding it up in rpms to get it up to temp just sitting and that’s in Southern California where it’s always 60-80 degrees out so if you’re in a cold climate it’s normal let it idle to get the cylinders warm then take off and you should be fine
Well the lb7 and lly short blocks are the same but you should I believe be around 22 pounds at idle I think is recommended when was the last time you have done an oil change
@@RESURRECTEDDIESEL Yes but Heads, injectors, turbo, egr system are all different... its one model newer many things were improved and changed.. hell even our pistons are different. Oil is 1000 miles old no leaks hope that helps. The answer is likely sell and get an LLY
i dont believe that lly have the valley sensor like the lbz do but if anything it would be measured right off the maf sensor in the intake on the older models but i never check mine
DURAMAX_DIESEL Thankyou for the quick response, I was wondering because on my LBZ when I give it gas the IAT at the manifold skyrockets to 180 degrees and it seems a bit high
Yeah I’m not too familiar with intake temps the lower the better obviously but the sensor is in the valley so I’m sure it gets warm! Do you have a cold air intake or anything
ECT LMM 12* =210* My truck has 180/185**Tstats All my other trucks indicated what the thermostats installed. This truck runs at 210* I think GM put the wrong gauge/sensors in the truck. I don't understand.....
I agree all trucks have 180/185 t stats but the gauges always go up to 210 everyone that I have had always had has gotten up there unless you’re say it’s 12 degrees out one of your t stats could also be stuck close if it’s getting that warm
I think it was just the design gm has because even with the edge or something reading the actual 180/185 or a little hire the Guage is meant to have some leeway so that was you have time to save your motor before total destruction if you were to have an issue I think. Gm engineers aren’t all that stupid I’m sure there is a reason for it but I wouldn’t know!
well today is your lucky day you get to learn!! the Duramaxs do in fact have two thermostats a 175 and 185 degree thermostat i believe are the opening temps
true not ever really much of an issue unless your thermostats are stuck open its not too often you here of a duramax under temp that isn't very easily fixed
DURAMAX_DIESEL yeah, that was my issue. It threw two codes, low coolant temp and MAF Sensor circuit codes. Replaced the thermostats and cleared the codes and neither came back.
I'm about to start my own RU-vid channel well I've already had it for a very long time but I'm about to blow it up and what I mean by that is freaking bulldog your truck that's number one number two Run your truck on hydrogen number three super cool your truck number for never go with OEM spec tires that is a fraud in itself
I really don't know what the hell Chevy is doing but it's kind of goes into the protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion and the sinking of the Titanic and the assassination attempts against Henry Ford when he decided to run for president when he figured out what was going on my whole point being is that Chevy should be making quality gauges that work for the life of the truck and I'm not really seeing that right now my tachometer bounces up and down for my transmission temperatures all the time my emergency light switch always seems to have a short in it and this constant overheating problem on top of the problem that this truck can really only handle about 7,000 lb up a mountain at 40 miles per hour that's pretty pathetic for a 3500 in my opinion I'm about ready to drop this truck all together and go for another class 8 trucks and do all my mods on that truck and just say fuck the Chevy is he can't make a good quality truck get out of the fucking business move over so someone else can
That’s also cause it doesn’t have any horsepower to heat the trans up 😂😂 I’m just messing though that’s really good and efficient though are you running a fan on it or just a larger cooler?
