In the first edition of Durations, in November 2023, we honored the legacy of Pauline Oliveros. She was a highly influential American composer, accordionist, and pioneer in experimental and electronic music. Renowned for her innovative contributions to contemporary music, she was a central figure in the development of experimental music practices.
Her concept of deep listening brings awareness to sound, fostering an attentive, meditative engagement with sonic experiences beyond ordinary listening. It involves tuning our ears to the nuances of sound, expanding our perception to embrace the full spectrum of auditory sensations.
In the context of a sound art event, deep listening extends beyond mere auditory reception - it encourages participants to immerse themselves fully in the sonic environment, exploring connections between sound, space, and consciousness.
We also invite attendees to explore acouscenic relationships to sound - meaning to understand the acoustic and scenic possibilities of sound art.
=====
In a deep listening session, we invite listeners to pay attention to external sounds that may influence the piece’s happening here, in the present time. We welcome external noise, and how it may influence listening as a practice.
