I got my offer today for Philosophy and Theology at St. John's - in a mix of excitement and panic I've been looking through your videos. A great help - thank you!
Hi JK. My daughter has been allocated Castle, and is now preparing the room preference form. We have a couple of questions : how many students share the bath and toilet in Moatside and Bailey Court? Is there single ensuite for first years?(Didn't think so, but it appears on the form). Is Owengate and within the main Castle building, is it only shared room with ensuite? Is BC shared with Hatfield? My daughter has chronic sinusitis, so air quality is important, hence she will likely need a purifier. Can you share your opinion which accommodation may be more suitable, based on general cleanliness, quality of building and furnishing, etc, as it contributes to allergens in the rooms. Thank you.
Thank you! This was so helpful :-) Just choosing a college will be a pain. Would you say older colleges are better than newer ones? I definitely found that when I went to Cambridge for a residential.
It completely depends on you. Whether you prefer history and tradition or modern facilities and more space etc. Personally, because I love history and old architecture, I love being at Castle and surrounded by the Bailey. But some people might prefer to have a really good gym their accommodation for their sports. If you are indifferent about that, then the best thing to do is look for whatever stands out and impresses you the most from each college.
Hi!! When taking a lecture, how big is the class? Like see lots of the uni's video and the class is HUGE!!! Just wonder how big each class really is. Also, the uni seems very rural.... does it have a shopping mall near by and what are the acitivities people typically do there? thanks!😁
Hi Jimmy! I'm applying for 2017 entry, and I am really interested in knowing more about the different colleges. I have checked the websites, but I think that a student's opinion will be far more reliable. Could you tell me a bit about how the vibe is in each of the colleges, and if there is any of them that is not really good? Thank you very much. Love your videos, they are soooo helpful :):)
It's quite hard to talk about other colleges since they are all so different from each other and I haven't experienced the life at other colleges. Best thing to do is to find out in person at an open day if you really can't decide on a specific college.
Just about to apply to Durham for 2017 entry! Was going for St Chad's but castle looks fun from your videos haha. Who has better accomodation and facilities? Would be grateful for any opinions or help
Jules Wong Don't want to sound blunt, but we have a castle haha. We eat, sleep, drink in the castle. Though Chads is also really nice. It's my second fave college
Jules Wong Chads is a much smaller college, they also have a really tight knit community like castle, though they do mingle a lot more with people from other colleges than castle do. I have a few friends at Chads and it's all general good vibes and nice people
It's the same for the home students. Treated as equals, equal opportunities etc. There are societies and clubs which celebrate each culture or nation's differences but they don't single out anyone.
There is no college that is particularly more social than others. It is entirely up to you and how you decide to spend your time. You can spend as much time as you like getting involved in college life or you can choose not to. But of course I recommend Castle because I'm biased.
I actually have no idea about Ustinov College. The best thing to do is to go to their open day to find out for yourself. A lot of the time I can only really talk about things that apply to all durham students or specifically for Castle. However I have no first hand experience at other colleges, I regret to say that I can't offer you any opinion on the college
