Dussack/Cutlass Sparring Mike vs Nick

A fight using a training version of a flamberge (flame blade) type of dussack/tessack that is in the Wallace collection. Made by Black Fencer as a custom, and facing a BF Storta.
These are swords that in English we would call a Cutlass (from late 16thc onwards). The fight here very much represents a cutlass fight, as we do so much sabre/broadsword training, though there are some other bits thrown in.

The guy on the left at 5:48 usually takes two steps in and then on the third step in will either attack or give up the advance. The other guy should use that to his advantage.

Question: Is it safe to give a lot of point with those types of sword or are they too rigid?
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing 6 лет назад
These both class as the stiff/rigid in the Black Fencer series. So, limited flex and you have to hold back a little with the thrusts. About the same flex as Regenyei sabres for example.

They seem to focus a lot on Renaissance and Napoleonic era weapons. They have a couple of longsword fight on their channel tho.

You can just show up to a session, just not the last one (for each club) of the month, as that is sparring only. So unless you have your own gear and previous experience, come to any other.

@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing 6 лет назад
In terms of hitting power? You have to be a little careful at the point of impact, but it can still be used at a very much martial level. If people started swinging it all out, that would be a problem though.
@dondeka2086

@@AcademyofHistoricalFencing why dont they go full blown swinging like boxers do?
@ponod
@ponod Год назад
@@dondeka2086 I've been doing HEMA for about a year now so I think I'm qualified to answer the question. The reason the aren't doing that is, these are sharp swords, at least they would be in a real fight, so you don't want to run at somebody since it's basically just running into their sword and since this is simulating a real historical dule, you cant really just charge at somebody. (Also if you do just charge you could get grappled and be killed that way.)

I'm confused. Are they trying to hit each other or each other's swords? Quite a few blows are clearly aimed at areas the opposing sword is already blocking. Like 1:02 for example.
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing 3 года назад
Absolutely aiming to hit the opponent always, but there are many reasons to intentionally target the blade. 1 - to bear or batter it. 2 - to beat, 3 - to provoke an expect response. All of these are setups to either break a guard or setup a riposte.

that serrated blade is not actual flamberge, but their way to simulate bind between 2 sharp blades in a plastic medium because real swords bite to each other, not slide. Lots of suicide techniques, you should take some cues from Roland :) Problem with this kind of mainstream HEMA is that you score like you are naked, but you fight like you are in armor :P

@duje44
@duje44 6 лет назад
ok, it may be that, but black fencer was using exactly the same design technique on other models to simulate sharp sword, i.e. not bouncing/sliding off each other when they bind, rather than to simulate one particular piece. I guess you get the added benefit to this one
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing 6 лет назад
It is not a BF sharp simulator. It is as per description, designed to replicate a famous flamberge example, the one John Tee shared above. It was custom ordered to match that. It blade edges is not shaped like the sharp simulator, but is unique to resemble the original. Though it has some similar effects for obvious reasons. As for taking cues from Roland. No thanks. Have met and fought him many times. He has gone down the path of lacking martial intent in some horrid practice methods. If you think we are fighting like we are in armour, you need to read some more accounts of actual combat, both armoured and unarmoured.
@duje44
@duje44 6 лет назад
ok, that's good to know, my mistake then As for Roland vs mainstream, well the problem I see with you guys is that you do not fear the blade, which changes the way you fight dramatically, heck even changing some of the basic rules can change the way you fight altogether. Think of it this way, i can bet you, that if you played with sharp swords withhout any protection, the thing we would see would be nothing like you train now. I am not writnig this to bash, its still a nice hobby, just making neutral observation
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing 6 лет назад
That is simply untrue. We frequently work on ways to fear the blade with a great range of different exercises and training methods. The way Roland trains now, there is no proper fear of the blade, because you simply cannot ever truly threaten your opponent. Training with sharp swords is absolute crap, and doesn't represent anything like a real fight, because you cannot ever threaten or endanger your opponent. Sharps can be useful for a few things. Standing in front of them to feel some threat at measure, and using them to engage with one another to understand the mechanics of how they engage. But any kind of sparring is so far removed from the reality of a fight it is ridiculous, and the very opposite of what he is aiming for. There are some great ways to train for more fear of a strike. Our duel system is great for it, as is training with some limited protective gear, as well as with foam covered hard core training weapons and no protective gear at all. But always remember, fights varied tremendously, from extremely cautious taps, to desperate fast engagements. Sometimes through desire, and sometimes necessity. Roland is doing what he always had, created a conclusion, and then tried to find the means to justify it. It needs to work the other way around.
