I'm very skeptical of these centrifugal separators. A conventional cyclone will spin the air a lot more, separating more dust, than just the half a turn or so that the air ends up doing in a centrifugal separator. Plus they easily plug up. But they do look very cool!
@johnfrederickson3082

Mathias, what do you think of having the holes in the top of the lid back to back maximizing the turn to .75 or more?
@danmoyer8191
@danmoyer8191 2 года назад
Totally agree. I used a similar system years ago before investing in a cyclone. The 'barrel separator' allowed a lot of dust to flow into the dust collectors bag once it got over 50% full. Worked well when the barrel was empty, as shown in this video. Not so well when the barrel was over 50% full.

I had the rockler DIY collector, and it was horrible. About half full barrel and it would start sucking into the bag. I read online some engineer said it really doesn’t make a cyclone in the barrel. The air inside tries to go from the in port to the out port across the top of the barrel. The air never swirls. Therefore very disruptive inside the barrel. I ended up adding the Dust Deputy. Solved.

Great video, as always. I bought the Rockler Dust-rite 4” kit, and they we very easy to install, no screws needed. The pieces have threads so you can screw the two pieces together. I still have some dust that makes its way through to the bag, but it is the very fine dust. Of course the fine dust is so light, it doesn’t;t fall to the bottom of the separator. I think it may be because I am using the 1250 CFM model. The Jet centrifugal , I have heard it has problems with getting clogged more than the drum one Chris built, dust that is stringy especially. For the barrel, you can get a 31 gallon garbage can at HD or Lowes for $32.

I've seen that Jet Cyclone on Home Depot's website and was wondering how it fared. Good to know that the other one did a better job. I made a Thien baffle setup for my barrel and dust collector that works well. But I'm not sure it's much better or necessary than the two port $20 setup you show. It was a lot of work to make.

Starting a small shop in the garage.. too much dust! My lungs hate me, too! I'm working on low to no budget. I have a Ridged vacuum medium sized. Does good but filter clogs. I saw a 5 gal buckets stacked as a cyclone... I've got access to free 50 plastic drums but they are one piece. So I was able to cut the top off, plastic below was 1/2" smaller diameter then the rest of the barrel.. long story shorter it slides tightly together. Works good are a dust cyclone. Zero dust in the Shop Vac! When I get more funds I'm going to move to a blower unit like you have hung on the wall.

I bought the drums from Oneida as they have all of the airtight fittings involved. You can get drums from Uline as well but I don’t believe they have the airtight fittings like the ones from Oneida. Is this something that could be used with a shop vac? I am still early on in my woodworking journey and upgrading my shop vac for $20 would be great. Could I use this with my shop vac and a HEPA filter untill I can afford to upgrade to a full on dust collector or does a shop vac not move enough cfm to make it work?
@WarrickTaylor
@WarrickTaylor 2 года назад
You can definitely use a shop vac with a basic separator. I've got that setup and it works with the cheapest shop vac I could find and a cheap plastic cyclone attached to a 15 litre bucket. 5 gallon I think. Lots of videos, including an awesome one from Chris Notap I'd recommend
@awlthatwoodcrafts8911

I'd be curious to know what the actual airflow measurements are, i.e. how much does each one degrade the airflow. I started out using a 12-gal Ridgid vacuum and the Dustopper, from Home Depot. After watching a bunch of videos on dust collection systems, I bought a $30 anemometer from Amazon and used it to compare the airflow directly from the vacuum versus the Dustopper. At the inlet of the vacuum, I got 180 cfm. At the end of the hose, connected to the Dustopper, I got 80 cfm. That's when I knew I needed something bigger. I bought the Dust Right 750 Mobile Dust Collector. The first thing I did after assembling it was test the airflow at the inlet. I initially found some air leakage around the cannister filter but after fixing that, I measured 500 cfm. It's supposed to be a 750 cfm unit. At the end of about 8 ft of flexible hose, it's more like 425 cfm. I also bought a cyclone separator lid for a trash can (from Woodcraft) but I haven't hooked it up to my Dust Right 750 as I'm concerned about how much effect it will have on the airflow. That's why I'm curious about how much your two separator systems affect the airflow of your two Dust Right machines. There is no doubt that the separators do a great job at separating, but at what cost to your airflow. That's the real measure of their worth, in my opinion.
@PaulHanak
@PaulHanak 2 года назад
Hey FYI, there is another video out there doing exactly what you asked. Im sure you could find it via search. He compared a traditional cyclone to this jet. TL;DR, the cyclone collected more dust, however the jet torpedo provided more cfm.

So I found this and your other separator video after you responded to my comment on the Dust collector initial set up video. (If you can't tell I'm binging your content 🤣) What I'm kinda curious on is that you used to use a trash can during your initial setup of the Jet system. Did you just get away from it because it was easier to manage the amount of dust you create with a barrel? Was there another issue with the trash can I missed while binging the content? And one last question, did you ever try a large trash bag on the inside of the trash can with either the Jet System or a large trash bag on the inside of the barrel of your new Amazon set up? I ask because I'm building a new shed shop myself and I dust collection is always a pain, replacing a large trash bag would probably be more efficient for me, but I'm unsure if it would work or mess up the way the system works. Thank you for the fast responses. I mean your first response was to a 2 year old video and was within hours man. You are seriously an inspiration......

First of all thank you for checking everything out and for your kind words. To answer your question about the trashcan it was still a viable option. I just decided to get two barrels to have them match and so they would be a bit more durable moving forward. But no issue with the trashcan. You also can’t put a trash bag inside or it will just suction up and block everything. Because the dust still have to come up and out of the barrel once the larger particles are deposited of airflow will just get sucked back in bringing the bag with it. Hope this helps and again thanks so much

@@marvthecarpenter I just found an older picture in my smartphone and posted there. 😊 What I wrote there is in Portuguese (I'm from Brazil), but there's an English version in the end. 😊

Hi Chris, I have a question for you. Where did you find your steel drums? Was it U-Line or some other place. Thanks... Love your channel

I got mine from Oneida. Those come with all of the seals in order to make it completely airtight. You can also buy them from Uline However I’m not sure if they come completely sealed. The ones from Uline are considerably less

@@AGlimpseInside Thank you very much Chris for your info. I think I might use U-Line. Oneida is pricy.

That would be a dream come true to be able to separate these two endeavors, video creation plus product development. But I have to be here at the house for now. Maybe in the future that’s the goal

There have been a few RU-vidrs that have just gone full cnc videos. And I understand you have to do what ya gotta do in business 100% . I for one love your shop builds it just feels more personal .and that’s usually what we get and you look like your having fun doing them. 100% a fan probably my favorite RU-vid personality.

I bought the Jet cyclonic separator based off your earlier video and I was really disappointed. Lots of dust and chips made it into the collector and it clogged when using the planer and jointer. Big thumbs down. I returned mine to Home Depot and bought a super dust deputy and it is night and day. really happy with the the SDD.

No thanks for the vote of confidence. Sorry it didn’t work out for you. Glad Home Depot took it back. It’s clearly not the superior system but I’m gonna keep it because it works for the CNC because there’s minimal chips. Thanks for letting me know and I appreciate your honesty brother

Make your own mdf by adding minimum resign to the excess saw dust you collect and put in a square mold. Great recycling project to use to make more tool holders etc..

I do make her meet ups from time to time through Instagram. The people I’ve connected with on there see what they’re all about. And then they’ll get the invite. Hope you understand this necessary step in this crazy world. It’s really the only platform you can really get to know somebody without ever meeting them
