Dusting off the compass | Important Channel Update and Happy New Year !
In this video, I take the young adventurers on their first hike using their new gear including new walking boots and rucksacks. I decided it was time to brush up on my map and compass skills, which I was once very proficient at. I will be joining a course at some point this year, so if anyone knows any decent ones, please let me know in the comments.
I explain why the content has tapered off at the moment, due to an unexpected change in my personal circumstances which has led to greatly reduced free time. I will adapt the content for the time being, so please bear with and understand there will be some more reviews and day hikes etc for the time being; for me this is the preferable alternative to making no new content at all.
If you have any suggestions for content, QA videos, live streams etc - please do let me know as the more interaction the better.
We used the map and compass to practice navigating to the summit of Pendle Hill in some at times, claggy and misty weather. Lunch in the summit shelter and a warming hot chocolate courtesy of the Speedster stove.
This was a lovely circular route which saw our descent via the commonly ascended steps of doom; we finished with a pint in the Pendle Inn.

I started my channel in '22. Literally a few weeks later, I change jobs, which ends up completely killing my spare time. Took nearly two years to rectify it. Its been killer, watching you guys all get out... This year, i finally have it sorted so I can crack on. Already got 3 multi day trips booked. I've got the go pro kit ready, it's finally time. Also, an idea for the kids, geochaching. Cracking way to get them out and orienteering. Check out daley outdoors, he did a video on it recently. I've always been keen on making sure my kids can map read. I also showed th how to navigate using the sun or stars.... theyre not always going to have the comfort of a map.

Hi Chris, There is a little chapel not far from Pendle Hill at Salem,Martin Top near Rimington on which there is a sun dial on the wall. The writing says,'Time flys swift away'.I used to past this with my brother ,twin sisters and my Dad on walks and also on our beloved bicycles. Sadly my Dad and one of my sisters are no longer with us they were brilliant and happy times. So my message to you and your family is keep doing what you're doing with your precious children and enjoy every second that you can with them. The skills that you are teaching them,just like my Dad taught us are invaluable and will give them a solid foundation for their future growth in the great outdoors. You’re a good en mate. They’ll remember these trips and lessons for life. One of my most enjoyable things from NavEx lessons was always finding where you are. Getting unlost! Take them somewhere, and get them to figure out where they are. Great fun. Very hard at night, but valuable skills. Not just map reading. Remaining calm, logic, decision making etc etc, brilliant. Hi Chris, had the same here, joining MR has taken up a lot of time so like yourself between that and family not had much chance to wildcamp. In terms of kids and outdoors I found waterproof socks are probably the best thing I ever bought them. It meant I didn’t need to spend a fortune on boots every 6-12 months as it didn’t matter so much if they weren’t waterproof. I could get away with the sock being slightly larger than needed so they last them a long time.

@@MCMOutdoors it is, I joined MR and thought my navigation was ok, realised how bad it was once we started on Navigation exercises 😁. Even though we can use tools like phones, watches etc, they like us to use maps and compass regularly.

I get once a month if that! Due to shared family commitments, so solo will be even harder But family always comes first so you'll still have your subs regardless of frequency of content. And definitely a good chance to show the kids new things and you've plenty of places to keep localish I'm sure they'll love going to with you

I remember doing that many moons ago with cubs then my old fella dragging me up Parlick with a map and compass. I am lazy and rely on memory map and phones but i know I shouldnt. Navigating with a map and compass is definitely a great skill to have. If I’m being honest, I’ve read all the theory on it, taking bearings, back bearings, pacing using time and footsteps, Naismiths rule etc, but I’ve never actually put it into practice. It’s most definitely something I would like to look into. On another note mate, family definitely comes first and I’m sure all your subs will understand that. never apologise for lack of content, family 1st, the outdoors will still be there when you get a chance to get out, good skills on the map etc, 1 thing i was told more than several moons ago was that if there are no features to go by, on some maps the drystone walls that surround the fields are on there, so as lonfg as you can see a certain shape field by eye & then match it to the map you're good to go, as for the walking poles 1 stick good, 2 sticks better 😁 atb Barry

I booked on a day's advanced nav skills course last December in the Yorkshire Dales. It was good fun to go out with a bunch of other people and to brush up on some nav skills. ❤️ family first always!!! Nothing wrong with a day camp and bringing the kids is another dimension of camping for sure. You plant for the future long hikes when they are older mate!

Get your priorities right! There are orphanages! Actually you might be on to something putting family outdoor content up. Facebook is overloaded with solo older males doing very similar wild camps. Have fun introducing your kids to the outdoors and I am sure your channel will grow rapidly. 🙂

Haha, yes - failing that I will train them up in camera work and editing and all I have to do is hike and camp :-) It is becoming a very saturated scene....... always looking for ways and ideas to diversify, so let's see - ATB
