I’m a huge fan of Sting but I agree. He’s a headline act and a legend but his characters were created by someone else. But that’s true of many wrestlers, I don’t see it as a criticism, it was still up to Sting to make those gimmicks work and he did

Mark Calloway didn’t come up with the Undertaker character, and in the hands of most guys, it would have died before the Attitude Era, but he made it cool and reinvented it along the way, like Sting did. It was the performer not the gimmick.

I've always wondered what Dustin Rhodes could have done with the Undertaker's gimmick. He played Goldust so well, such a dark mysterious character. I don't think it would have been better than Calloway but it would have been different and damned good.

Jim Cornette described it perfectly, Sting said "yes" to anybody; if he was put with the right people he'd do fine. Then he went to TNA and we saw how well he did as the ring general.

This explains why Sting made the mistake of joining the nWo Wolfpac. It made absolutely no sense and if he understood his character like a DDP did, he would have said no to the group.

Dutch is spot on, Sting was managed all the way through those early years. He sat under the knowledge tree and listened, what he didn't understand he just took instructions on. He looked good and had a great attitude. He deserves his legendary status because he was always a willing listener. In many ways that's the ultimate compliment.

Not really. Because if all he does is listen and say yes to others around him then when he is dealing with people who don't have his best interest in mind it will hurt him, which is exactly what happened to Sting in WCW.

@@markant9534 Agreed. Especially on Sting not being a good talker. I mean it says a lot when the most over Sting was in his career was when he wasn't talking with the crow gimmick. And it's no coincidence that when he started talking again his character began losing steam. Sting was the most over wrestler in 97 and by 98 a lot of that heat was lost because he didn't understand the appeal of his character which was his mystique.

Without Flair Sting and Luger couldn't draw dimes with anyone else. Sting finally became a legitimate dime drawer in 1997.

@@andisuge I'd say a bit of both because that crow gimmick Sting was using at the time was *gold* and he was pretty much the perfect foil to go up against the nWo. As over as DDP and Luger were in 97 I don't think any of them actually eclipsed the nWo like Sting did.

How about he got over by years in the gym, his customized painted face he did, choosing his ring entire and the very color of his hair. He had great charisma and a connection with the audience. Did flair get him completely over? Yes he did but it’s because he knew he was adored by fans and new they could draw money. Flair definitely carried the match but you can’t take away the momentum Sting had! Love the show and Dutch!

Actually both Sting & Warrior went to Watt's UWF in Oklahoma. However Warrior didn't like it there and left Sting in The UWF. He went to WCCW in Texas and became The Dingo Warrior. I believe Gary Hart was the Booker in Texas at that time. An of course Sting was Grandfathered into NWA from UWF. Than absorbed into WCW.

give credit to him to being open though to the advice. plenty have an ego so big they wouldn't be open to the guidance being offered. but yeah when you watch early sting you can tell he's being carried by charisma and good heels who could call matches

Sting is more like the star of a production while Flair would be the director. Sting would go on to become a fairly exciting wrestler but I don't know if he really developed a great mind for the business. He would have great matches with guys like Vader who could carry Sting. But when Sting was with lesser opponents, the same spark wasn't there. And I can see what Dutch is saying here about other people's ideas. The thing is that Sting was associated to a lot of really bad moments too, sometimes cartoony or goofy whether it was Robocop, the Dudes with Attitudes (awful name), Barry Windham as the fake Sting, the Black Scorpion, that god awful vignette with the midget and bomb on the island, the Shockmaster, even Crow Sting with the vulture (where a lot of people would sardonically remark about Sting's thanksgiving Turkey). I think part of it was that he wanted to do these things for the kids and at various times, he'd just go along with what they gave him without realizing possibly that the end result would damage not only the business but his overall image. I think Herd etc were trying to make him into the 2nd coming of Hulk Hogan in WCW which was bad because the WCW/NWA fans were more about gritty, hard hitting angles and wrestling rather than cartoony phoniness.

The face paint came from his days as a tag team partner with the ultimate warrior when they were called the Blade Runners, which is why the warrior had face paint too.

Sting was a jobber with the ultimate warrior as tag team. But then sting learned how to work and Ric flair helped sting become great by having a match. Ric flair would go on to have matches with Ricky Steamboat and Dusty Rhodes. Flair knew how to get guys over. So Flair saw talent in sting and want to helped him because sting is such a great guy.

No, the previous Wrestlemania did far better business and Warrior run as champ was hurt because he beat Hogan, Hulk went on to easily outdraw Warrior on seperate house shows that year.

This is true of a lot of wrestlers. One of the reasons I laugh when people say Sting and Bret Hart are on the same level. Bret knew psychology and could wrestle while Sting needed constant guidance

This is what made him different from the warrior. They were both green but they looked great. Sting was coachable knew he was green but was likeable and was willing to learn. Warrior didn't care he just knew he looked good and that's all that mattered so he was perfect for wwf because that's what they like but, according to his peers he never got it just thought since he had the body he should be the man...

I know everyone says that and it’s probably true. I just wonder. If their scenarios were switched, would their stories have changed? JCP was known for its work rate and WWF known for gimmicks and being the land of the giants. If Warrior went to JCP, he would have had to learn or be gone very quickly. If Sting went to the WWF, his body and charisma would have gotten him over and he wouldn’t have Flair and others teaching him. Also Dutch has one major thing wrong in his story, which definitely shows the difference between Sting’s character vs Warrior’s. They both went to Watts. However Warrior no showed a show to go to WCCW for a bigger payday. It definitely shows Sting was a more standup guy, that he kept his word.

@@steveomac385 maybe and maybe not. The Horsemen and Rhodes took Sting under their wings, yes to make money. That was one of the biggest differences between JCP and the WWF. JCP guys knew they needed new opponents. In the WWF, it was just create monsters for Hogan. Warrior had a far more vascular look than Sting. So Sting might’ve never caught Vince’s eye. There’s also no telling what Sting would’ve become without tutelage. No one told Warrior, he was doing the Gorilla Press Slam wrong until his feud with Rude.

@@gregorylevi1826 that was after the tutelage of Flair, Dusty, the Road Warriors and everyone else at JCP. I’m actually old enough to have watched The Blade Runners and then The Dingo Warrior in WCCW and early Sting under Hot Stuff Eddie Gilbert in UWF. If Borden & Helwig switched roles, you probably wouldn’t of heard of either them. Sting wouldn’t have been taught in the WWF and the Warrior wouldn’t listen to advice. Sting might’ve been lucky and Dusty might’ve picked up the discarded Sting from WWF. Then Sting could’ve been taught how to be a superstar. I agree with assessment from The Self Destruction of The Ultimate Warrior, if you take away Warriors theme music and his running to the ring. He wouldn’t have had a career. Warrior wouldn’t have been the one to beat The Honky Tonk Man for the IC Title and have the rocket strapped to his back. I just don’t buy Sting in that roll of having his music blasted, running to the ring and bouncing around the ring like a madman to get himself noticed

Sure Sting had the Muscle Beach look. So did Luger. But isn't that what this is about, at least partly? What about Hogan? To say someone else carried someone else is, in this business, often perceived as an insult. Again, it takes at least TWO to have a great or even good match. Flair had the experience. It isn't surprising he called their matches. Flair didn't call Harley Race's matches did he? Flair put alot of work into his gimmick and I completely agree that a good heel takes much more work to master than a good face. Flair's character was not completely his own and was patterned after Buddy Rogers and even Gorgeous George. He could do it better than anyone else. Still thinks he can (lol). Sting could never make any other gimmick work other than the early colorful Beach gimmick and later the Crow like gimmick, both face gimmicks. Chasing Flair was the angle. Flair holding the belt and all the other top faces, which Luger also became a part of after his Horseman run, chasing him. Sting was a part of that. So was Ronnie Garvin, Ricky Steamboat, Ricky Morton, Dusty Rhodes, Magnum TA, anyone else that came along. Good podcast with Dutch.

Totally agree with Dutch and have always felt that way about Sting, Luger and a lot of the big muscle heads Flair faced. And I think Flair loved working with those guys because it secured his spot because they could not take his place.

Well luck and also being extremely likable and charismatic. Seriously you can be terrible employee but if your coworkers and boss likes you as a person they'll overlook most of the shit you do. Think about the fact that it was the Outsiders who gave Sting the crow idea and than try to remember any other time they did something for anyone that didn't also benefit them or one of their close friends

Not a sting fan, or sting hater. Just found him kind of boring. How did he get over? He looked good and it's obvious somebody new how to push him. He didn't give a good interview, his woooooo....... seem like a pale imitation of Ric Flair. And his wrestling was not very exciting. Sting and Lex Luger 2 Mega Stars that were incredibly untalented and boring to watch. It would have been fun to hate him, or fun to like him, BUT just boring 😴

I couldn't agree more. His makeup was very similar to warriors and would change color or facepaint design but it stayed the same general shap luke warrior minius the rounded off triangle on the forhead. Then he rips off the crow then later on he rips off the joker. That's just his look. Bot gonna lie, I always felt he was a little overrated.

Well yeah they use to be tag team partners so I can understand their facepaint being similar still after they split up. But they both copied their facepaint from "The Legion Of Doom" The Rode Warriors.

If it wasn’t for heels I would of never cared about wrestling. HHH carried WWE for a good decade. The heels do the cool shit. Sting I never got into. I felt bad when rollins ended his career for a while. But sting is clearly not the sting he was in the 90s and AEW milks the shit out of him still

Warrior also said in a shoot interview that their differences stemmed from Warrior being to type of guy who wanted to control his gimmick and career where Sting was happier to be told what to do, pretty much like Dutch says here. He’s a legend but Dutch is right.

@@robrob9250 thing is it worked. As my uncle would say " he knew enough to know he didn't know shit". Sting always struck me as a low ego guy thats willing to do whatever he needed to do to make the show or program better and understood he should listen to the people with more experience while Warrior only cared about making himself look good.
