You don't have actual conversations with most of these people. You just use a few lines you learned from a book or the internet, which causes really awkward situations. You haven't impressed anyone with this, tbh.

+My dream Well if we're talking not-fluent-language, then I speak about 8. Fluent however, is 3. Fluent for me is when you stop stuttering when ordering a sandwich with several toppings (no "euh...with the.eh- eh- eh- ehhhh- lettuce and the eh-eh-eh-what's it called, ehh..ehh..pickles..and-" ) and are able to direct strangers across town with 'left right, left at church, right at supermarket, trainstation etc.'-directions. If that goes perfectly smooth, and you can answer a couple of basic questions, I think you can say you're fluent. However, I personally put the bar higher for myself. I say fluent when I can ramble on about things, without having to stop and search for the words.

When he spoke Vietnamese, he tried to avoid answering to questions and instead only go for his separate stories in Vietnamese like it was pre-programmed. I think he is skillful either way but I just think that a lot of stuff he learnt was just preprogrammed and cannot adapt on the fly so well if they one he talks to switch the subjects to their likings...
@rolflin2699
@rolflin2699 4 года назад
Thats not a reality, thats a STEP in learning a language, he used to do the same with my language “spanish” and now he got waaaaaay better... first you learn a bunch of expressions then you go and have conversations to lose the fear of using the language and once that fear is over you start to absorb everything that the other person says which automatically starts to be on your vocabulary, for me this happened with bulgarian, english and mandarin so its absolutely normal

@StayReal02
@StayReal02 3 года назад
@@acdev972, what he did was very similar in that sense that he repeated exactly what he learnt by heart, a specific phrase - only. If somebpdy asked him a tricky question on the spot, then he would have a problem to answer since that was not what he learnt. He is not adaptable to the language. You can clearly see him dodging those tricky questions during Vietnamese part and instead went on with what he learnt like what a parrot would have done. You seem to have problem to understand this principle. I think Im talking to a wall right now.

There are different kinds of Latin, guys. There is the more common "Roman-Catholic Latin" nowadays, which is actually spoken, but mostly in the Vatican as a form of tradition. There is also "Roman Latin" which has mostly made up rules, but still standardized in textbooks that are taught in schools that still have the language as a class. The language is only "dead" because the population that feasibly speaks it consistently is less than any other language, but it's still a language that people can speak.

I hate to say it but I don't think this guy really deserves the title of polyglot. To me, a polyglot is someone who was able to achieve fluency in say 4+ languages, and maybe has some kind of crazy natural ability. I have a friend who I would consider a polyglot; she speaks Polish, English, Russian, Ukrainian, Italian, French and Mandarin with surprising fluency. I don't claim to know these languages, but hearing her speak with natives always sounded really natural and smooth. She speaks quite decent English, but says English is her weakest language by far. By the way, this guy's Japanese is a tad shite. I am no Japanese expert, but 私はカウボーイです is not a tricky sentence. He didn't conjugate any verbs, or use any complex grammar. AはBです(か) is page 1 of the simplest Japanese textbooks. I would say he doesn't speak Japanese.
@yw7188
@yw7188 5 лет назад
I agree sir, he is no way a polyglot, it seems like he has no basic understanding of most of the 18 languages he claims to be fluent in (fluent is used here because he calls him self a polyglot), maybe he knows three or four languages well but he is another youtuber seeking quick fame. I cant judge his ability and he certainly knows way more than me but I can say that for my native language he is barely at a level capable of holding a normal conversation, and this seems the trend as many comments say this for other languages.

I think it's important to note that he doesn't say that he's FLUENT in all these languages, he just speaks a bit of each. For example, I speak Japanese, Okinawan Hougen, and English fluently. When I say fluent I mean I can understand an advanced amount of the language, and if I don't understand a word or phrase, I can have it explained to me in that language without having to revert back to my native tongue. But I do speak conversationally in Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, and Korean. So if I post a video of me speaking all the languages I know, 4 out of 7 are going to be with shaky grammar and pretty bad.
