Shredlord, Necrotic Nick and Jammin' Jon go over the latest release from Scottish progressive/ sludge/ stoner metal act Dvne with their new album "Etemen Ænka" out now!
Was unsure whether to buy this album at first for some reason, but Oh my God I'm glad I did, I think it's an amazing release!.. Not so crazy on the interludes as they dragged a bit, but the main songs I thought were incredible!.. Defo hear a lot of early Mastodon/Neurosis influence, but that's not a problem for me... In places I kept hearing riffs that reminded me of Karma to Burn, which is a good thing as I rank their 97 Debut as THE best Stoner Rock album ever!
Necrotic Nick- I'm still waiting on my copy. I liked this one but not nearly as much as the debut which is amazing if you haven't heard it. I loved the huge droning atmosphere but this one labored a lot of the same dynamics which hampered it a bit for me. I dig it though.
@@thrallsofmetal Necrotic Nick _ I'm gonna have to track that debut down, if it's even better than this new one then I'm in for a real treat!.. Its weird cos I've never thought of myself as a big Progressive fan, but some of my fave albums this year have been in that genre, ie Soen, Iotunn and this here Dvne album!
I had a feeling you guys would review this release, I totally got into this band a few months ago when you mentioned them in your stoner bands collection. Great stuff, amazing sophomore release. Their songwriting has evolved and matured into something more layered and complex sound wise on this second effort.
Necrotic Nick- It's a solid follow up. I think the production and their overall sound has broadened quick a bit and the synths add a lot of atmosphere. I think they labor a lot of the same dynamics, but they are good dynamics. Can't wait to get my copy.
I respect and appreciate that your reviews can be critical. I think too many youtubers are straight up fanboys. This is a good example and I have noticed this in other reviews and album rankings. That’s what we need , a little honest discussion and disagreement. Nice job.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We try to stay away from being too much of giant fanboys. It still does happen from time to time but generally if even our favorite bands disappoint us we'll let people know.
Sì-XIV, Towers and Satuya for me anytime. And because I don't have your knowledge of genres and bands, I'd say if Metallica had a child with the old Sepultura, it would be Dvne. Btw, I'm sure you'd like their Progenitor (sic!) album from 2013 best, with Protostar sounding like Orion, When Planets Die and Red Giant being my highlights. 👊😏🤘
I've been in love with Asheran since it released. Glad to see you guys gave this a review. I agree it's a bit of a step down. But overall I liked the sound on it and the slight change in direction. I also adore the synths on this one so I was a fan of that as well. Enjoyed the review!
I also have a few suggestions: Joe should do guitar centred videos and John should do drum centres videos, like breakdowns or even a list of their favourites/influences. I’d love to see that
Necrotic Nick- Actually, Shred does have a guitarist oriented segment and is working on a new episode for it. Jon has his What's Jon Jammin' one but nothing specifically about drummers. He might really like the idea though.
This is as pure as a progressive metal album gets. If someone was to ask me "give me a progressive metal" band to listen to, I would give them this album. BTBAM, for example, has too many extreme parts and even grindcore moments, for example. Also, maybe post-metal for sure, as the band itself claims, but this album is not sludgy and not stoner metal at all. Also, it's way better than a 3.5 out of 5. The problem with saying they were their influences on their sleeves is that they do this better than anyone I've ever heard. Love this channel. Just disagree with this review. Keep up the great work!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I like this album (just got my copy not too long ago actually) but think Asheran is still a better album in my opinion. There's a lot of elements at play on this one like Post Metal and I would even say Stoner and Doom metal with the big droning riffs. I would probably still recommend BTBAM to a prog fan over this one because I think including more styles like extreme metal in with all the traditional prog metal stuff is pretty progressive since it adds a drastically different dynamic to the overall sound. Still, this is solid album and it may continue to grow on me the more I listen to it. Thanks again, bro!
@@thrallsofmetal I started with Dvne with this album so I'm REALLY excited to here the debut. If it's even close than, to me, this band is a stand out. I think this new album though is the Lateralus of this generation.
@@heavytherapy I agree I started on asheran and find this album a lot more cohesive than asheran personally. this is one of my favorite albums of the year by far
Necrotic Nick- I've heard those names dropped but I haven't jammed them yet. I'm eager to jam that new Sanguisuggabog for sure though. I love their videos. lol
