Wow that’s mind blowing I had never actually heard of someone who knew Celibidache in person. You’re very lucky. I am from Italy and I am myself also very young only 17. I’ve discovered him like 3 years ago and he’s been the only teacher for me since then. I could resemble in my way of thinking everything he said. Must be awesome to have a so close sibling that can like talk u about him every day ahahah.

You're right. I just came here after listening to the Karajan Berliner version. Too fast, I thought. Even though I have listened to it before and appreciated it. Realized that it was because in my head I was hearing this Celibidache version!

It is Celibidache's intimate knowledge of the purpose of every melody within the symphony and how to set tempos that allow both Dvorak's genius and the virtuosity of the players to shine. This rendition - in my mind -- is as close to what Dvorak intended as you can get.

Apparently there is a psychological explanation for this - something about releasing emotional tension brought on by the music or something like that.

KittyFluff Love When else are you supposed to cough? It would be rude to do it while the movement is played. So you hold it back and cough in the breaks.

I was brought up on the Chicago Symphony version - l'm now 77 - so maybe that's why for me it's the best. There was something about the coda of this one which didn't work for me. Perhaps someone who understands music could suggest why not?!

It's my understanding that the 2nd Movement (Largo) is based on a Negro spiritual Dvorak heard during his visit to the U.S. (1892-1895). From Wikipedia: "Dvořák was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvořák had absorbed their "spirit" before writing his own melodies. Dvořák stated: I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition, to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are the folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them."

+Philippe Renaud An interesting note: If you listen to recordings of classical music starting in the '60s and '70s on up to the current time, you frequently can notice that, over the years, conductors and chamber musicians gradually began playing the great works at a faster and faster tempo. Not sure what that means. Maybe it's a comment on the modern short attention span or the hectic pace of life today.

This was the first recording of this symphony I listened to. So naturally it sounds right, while everything else sounds hurried. Best rendition of a very well known symphony.

Hello Ian. Each one his taste. Personnally I find it lacks some stamina (don't know the precise word : I'm French). For instance at 2min 35 sec the "attaque" of instruments is a bit weak, almost heavy. I am not an absolute fan of Karajan (often too nervous) but I prefer his rendition (with Vienna Philarmonic). I am still investigating to find an old version (was on vinyl LP 12", conductor forgotten ?) which was my favourite when I was young in the fifties. Have a nice day.

My mother played a vinyl 12" in the fifties and sixties all the time, hence I got very used to the timing and interpretation. This version is the closest I've heard. Maybe your old fifties version is the same. Cheers

I know what you mean - the vinyl version in our house was with Rafael Kubelik, and it becomes definitive if you hear it 50 times by the age of 10!

Star Wars, Jaws, the opening theme in the 2nd movement is referred to as the Titanic hits the ice berg…. So much more. John Williams is a genius in his own right but he clearly refers to this piece in much of his best work. It is so romantically epic and cinematic. The best piece of music composed in the late 19th century in my opinion. There is so much emotion expressed here.. It is a love letter written to America

Celibidache was one of the great conductors of the 20th century. I saw him live in nine of the ninety-nine concerts he conducted in Spain throughout hsi career, between 1989 and 1994 (the ones I saw). He was very different from other conductors. Sadly, though, in spite of his unworldly attention to detail, not once did he drive me to tears, which is something that other conductors have done (Zubin Mehta, for instance, twice).

I do agree with you about the 2nd movement. Too many conductors, included the venerated Karel Ancerl (1958) play it too fast. Anyway I can't understand why the 1st and 3rd movement are that slow while the Final one is really impressively majestic and I don't care if it's a bit slower than other versions. Celibidache really caught the essence of this masterpiece. According to me the best ever version of this symphony is Ferenc FRISCAY with Berliner Philharmonic Orchestra in 1960. Unfortunately no video available, only audio... (4th movement at watch?v=1grGSJlbUnE)

***** While Dvorak was a romantic composer, the programatic music of the time are used in practically all the music, even if it's not technically labelled a tone poem. This is actually based heavily on the Tale of Hiawatha, the second movement being the march to get Minnehaha, as well as a funeral march, the scherzo being a musical depiction of Hiawathas wedding, but it is a loose "New World" theme as it also has a lot of basis and borrowing from Germanic music, which Dvorak really did try and emulate and become a part of, despite the Germans pigeonholing him as a Czeck composer.

pega17pl No. That's the conductor's perogative--his creative vision. I think that it's convincing even if the tempo at times is a little slower than usual. If everyone used the same tempos, then you don't need a conductor. A metronome would suffice. Also, this is a live performance and in live performances conductors and musicians do things differently than if they were sitting in a recording studio. I think that if you were in the audience, this performance would have been superb.

+pega17pl I think there might be a trend for great conductors to explore slower tempos as they get older. Bernstein, Karajan, similar deal. Makes sense.

Started in my teens, thanks to my mother, and passed it onto my sons. It is educational and uplifting. It will make you worldly and a much smarter person. It will make you want to study world history and other cultures and that my friend will give you a good philosophical foundation. All that aside, it sure beats listening to rap music!
