“It’s like one disaster after another.” Yeah Dwarf Fortress is like dominoes, once one thing goes wrong, EVERYTHING will go wrong

Anybody Kit gets paired up ends up wonderfully. It's like he is the kind of friend who easily gets along with anybody he is with. I like that.

I actually tried to play Dwarf Fortress after Sseth's review and the learning curve is very steep, but something that amazes me is the generation of the world and it's history, depending on the RNG, you can go from these classical high fantasy worlds, to post-apocalyptic nightmares full of cosmic horrors in which maybe your 7 dwarfs are literally the last dwarfs in existence.

The single best "story" to share with the uninitiated is the Catocalypse Update. One update introduced a sort of biological simulation of poisons, so larger creatures would require higher doses of poison to succumb than smaller, etc. Several updates later, the Tavern Update occurred, which consolidated nearly all drinking to a single room in the fort, added dancing and the notion of having guests in your fort. Then the cats started to die. All of the cats. Everywhere. In everybody's game. Bug reports flood in. A week passes. The creator of the game (paraphrase: "So about 5 years ago, I introduced a self-cleaning mechanism to the game so eyeballs could be automatically cleaned of dirt and blood by blinking, and I decided to apply the same logic to cats, since they clean themselves too, right? I thought it would be cute if all the cats would occasionally go about licking themselves clean. Turns out, after the tavern update, all the cats would walk through the tavern, and every time they stepped in a puddle of booze, they were absorbing a full dwarven serving of the stuff right into their little paws. When they cleaned themselves up later, they would instantly ingest 6 or 7 drinks and get alcohol poisoning, vomit, pass out and die. So it's kind of all working the way it should, except for the volume calculations. I did some testing and I think it's fixed now. Let me know if you find anymore mysterious dead cats in your forts. Thanks."

There's actually a paid steam version of dwarf fortress coming, which supposedly will be slightly more user friendly and have better graphics, but no idea when it will be ready.

I used to play Dwarf Fortress back then. I remember my first fort, it was fine and dandy until one of my dwarf throws a tantrum and iirc, he started fighting another dwarves which I think caused my entire fort to fight each other.... then the goblin invasion happened lol. Yeah, once something goes wrong in this game, EVERYTHING will go wrong. Its just one disaster after another. Also,I still haven't figured out how to tell my Dwarves to reload their crossbows to this day.

You can really pinpoint the "balls hitting the water" moment when Sseth says "race riots"

Being a guy who played like 12 years this game i must say.. this is just the tip, it's not a game for everyone, you will need to learn A LOT of things and remember all the hotkeys, but it's extremely fun when you reach knownledge

Since you didn't seem to get the goblin war Narrative: The fortress (which is the home of dwarfs) had good relations with the goblins. One day, a human guest drinks too much and goes beserk. He rips off the jaw of a goblin and then beats the goblin with said jaw. The goblin punches back in retaliation. This is spotted by a Dwarf. "A poor human got assaulted by an evil goblin, we gotta help that innocent human out". This quickly resulted in a full blown war between the Dwarfs and Goblins

ᚠ = F spoken as Fehu means Property/Cattle ᚱ = R spoken as Raido means Travel ᛗ = M spoken as Mannaz means Man ᛟ = O spoken as Opala means Relative/Clan roughly translated I don't think combined the word means anything, more that it just fit the theme of the game. Best I got. I went with the old Futhark as that is the one I remember, the anglo-saxon is a bit different and the newer one also but it should be roughly the same for these.

Wait, did Kit just call Sseth a "denizen of the Warp"? Kit is a fan of Warhammer 40K? NICE!

Story time: My most recent fortress has a mayor who happens to be a vampire. She has murdered three of my Dwarves, stolen an artifact, and has been actively plotting against my fortress. She's currently spending 650 days in jail.

There was a story irl a few years ago of a writer who's wife had gone missing and a year or two later he wrote a book where the main character killed his own wife. The police investigated the method and found that the writer had actually killed his wife that way. Sooo... the fact that in Dwarf Fortress, a Dwarf can depict himself killing another dwarf and then later on does the exact thing he depicted is something that basically happened in real life too. That's how good of a simulation this game is. The individual dwarfs have rudimentary thoughts that they dwell on and depending on their moods they can get stuck thinking something over and over again and if they're artists they will then depict that thing they've been obsessing over. This game is just mindblowing to me.

I don't know what's wrong with Kit's mic but please fixed it. It turned Kit's laidback atmosphere to deep fried Scotland bagpipe ASMR.

The goblin dancer basically snowballed into all goblins siding with the dancer and since all dwarves sided with the wrestler they killed all the goblins.

For the record dwarf fortress is A M A Z I N G. The thing to remember is no matter how insane it all sounds it somehow manages to make sense. And I mean what other game has a random chance to let you spawn as a woodpecker man and headbut cave trolls to death. Or create a vast fortress of hundreds of residents only to watch it all fall apart because your gate guy got drunk and the cook forgot to put the steaks in storage whilst a Daemon horde emerges from hell and attempts to overun you before the elves/goblins/elves/humans/god's do

I was going to recommend you guys godhand review but then I remember what sseth put in the last segment of the video xD

Played some, tried really hard to learn the game properly, but I was never able to channel my autismo powers to get good. First and second fortress were absolute nightmares, with everyone dying of thirst in the first within a single month, and the second getting instantly destroyed by a pack of wild (and 100% mundane) animals. Dwarf Fortress has long acquired legendary status within the gaming circles, and deservedly so. It's not "hard," it's just insanely complex.

These guys have never played the game, but at the end of the video, give some very good advice about how to play the game by accident.

If you run out of Sseth content ambiguousamphibian has a very similar vibe.

If you wanna see a real Charlie Foxtrot of a DF fortress, check out 'Boatmurdered'. Even Satan would look at it and say: "Yeah no, I can't top that."

honestly security for taverns is possible and i never thought of that. Make two dwarves alternate with full armor no weapon and i believe if someone starts i fight they will attempt to end it before it spreads. The no weapons is so they hopefully dont end it with a beheading. Not a bad idea.
