Since the death of John Uptigrove development of the two place Heli has been cancelled. And no, Dwight was not a military pilot. He learned to fly just like the rest of us.
@ J. Michael, when is the next fly-in? I just bought a 285, I was told it was around mar 22, 2019 but wasnt sure if I heard them correctly. FX Composite is literally impossible to reach, never answer calls, or emails.
The turbine is the most reliable but I could not afford that one. The 285 seems to be reliable to most however I am having fuel mapping issues. That being said I believe I am the only owner living at 5,280 MSL. The factory is working on a new ECU to address this issue.
It is highly recommended to have a PPL to fly however. It is not advised to fly without one, but legally you can in 2 models. Without the PPL you cannot land or approach any airport. You must fly in designated zones too and it heavily restricts traveling.
They start out at $35,000 USD. Requires a $10,000 down payment to get the ball rolling on production. Any added features is more cost. Base price is $35,000 for the cheapest version. There are 4 models I believe. Also additionaly, that price does not include the cost to build the helicopter which is an additional $15,000 if FX Composite builds it for you. If you pick it up, and build it yourself like I am doing, you can save alot of money in shipping which would be average for in the US around $1500-$7000 in shipping costs. When the helicopter is completed it will be valued at around $50,000 usd if you buy the $35,000 models. Add $15-20,000 to the value of the helicopter when its completed due to labor. You will also need a license for certain models also which can range in price from $10,000-$15,000.
