Part II of our factory tour of Composite FX, maker of the Mosquito Helicopter. In this video, we talked about builders options for engines. The Mosquito helicopter comes in different categories, one ultralight, a piston engine powered model and a turbine engine powered model. Piston engine options typically give you power output of 85 hp while you get roughly 90 hp from the more powerful turbine engines.
Your engine choice for your helicopter will also reflect in the price because the turbine engines cost three times more than the piston engine. Let me know what you guys think. A full flight video of the mosquito helicopter XET will be uploaded soon.

Welcome to my world Mike 👍🏾. I’m currently racking up my hours toward attaining my PPL in Rotorcraft. I have a high respect for fixed wing, but my first love will always be Helicopters due the take off accessibility & well there just badass. If you ever get the itch, make sure you go through proper training rather than “The guy who said you don’t need a license” lol. Stay safe brotha & much love from Los Angeles.

Mike, thank you for the added information. Even at $70k with the turbine motor (high kinetic energy) and the slightly greater HP- a 3,000 FPM climb is pretty insane. Good, clean fun for less than a new Corvette. Sure, top speed is a mere 100 MPH, cross country travel is a no go, and, taking the wife out for a $100 burger isn't gonna happen- but, I'd guess that the amount of focus required for flight safety would limit flight times @ 2 hours anyways. I found a nice used XET (turbine) with low hours for $85k, but, it has every available option on it including the Ford Model T color scheme (black). Based on the dialogue- I sense that the MZ202 is less dependable than the 85 HP version, and, neither piston engine can match the consistent (and dependable) output of the fuel hungry (9+ GPH) turbine. You and I share similar dimensional space, but- I'm only 170 Lbs.- so, I'd be happy with the performance of the middle model. Boy, it would be great to find a low hour used one for say- your airplane budget ($25,000). But, dreamer's dream... Oh, before I forget- please put closed captioning below the dialogue from 10:30 'til the end. What's stated, and, truth vary by a significant margin. XET= $90,000.00 NEW (because no-one installs base instruments. Ever.) XE w/ larger (85 HP) piston engine= $70,000. (Base= $54,000.00) See XET above XEL= $50,000.00 XE Air= $40,000.00 Build hours: 1,500 to 2,200 or, about 3 years for your average builder. Promise- no 'hate' meant or intended, just real world considerations for those on the fence about commitment. Yes, a lot of money, AND, a lot of time, but, definitely worth it to the select few who have 'The Right Stuff'. Personally, I have too many kids, too much work, too many hobbies and interests to build one, but- would love it if I found one in a barn for sale on the cheap. Sadly, there are too few in the world, too few unfinished and probably NO unloved ones on the planet... Those two guys are my heros. I think the guy wearing the black 'Got Mosquito?' T-Shirt is Dwight Junkins, who is a gutsy fiberglass genius (Nikola Tesla/Albert Einstien/Elon Musk all wrapped up into 1). He deserves a movie, like the engineer who designed the Mosquito Air. I wish I could ask him a couple of dozen questions in front of a camera. Very grateful for his commitment, otherwise- there would be no Mosquitos to swat at all. Dave P.S. Mike, the audio is a little rough- not sure why and I know you invested in expensive microphones?
@DCGULL01
@DCGULL01 5 лет назад
@michael ryan No, the website is current. The XET kit does NOT include the modified turbine in the kit price. It takes a special person (or BIG budget) to complete one of these. Skill sets needed; mechanical, fiberglass & paint, desire to upgrade "while I'm in there" & general price creep (over time from purchase to completion) are real on a project of this magnitude. I WANT one- bad! I have mechanical aptitude & a fiberglass expert on staff (wife), but, no paint skills. I'd need to pay for pro spray- after the $$ & time investment to get to that point. Advanced avionics are more expensive, but- lighter in weight- just the excuse I need to upgrade. Attempting to put a dose of reality into a very exciting proposition- that's all. Remember, I like everything about it, just wanted to share what I found on additional research, that's all.
@codmott286
@codmott286 5 лет назад
@michael ryan Innovators site uses optimistic pricing on the turbines. Since they are military surplus you have to find one wherever you can and on average they sell for about $20k a piece. So 20k on top of the 50k for the helicopter kit puts you in the 70-75k ballpark.

That is my favorite chopper. I want to fly that thing and I don't know anything about helicopters. I think I can learn how to actually fly that damn thing. Bill Burr flies a helicopter now. This particular chopper is my favorite out of them all. One seater, no distractions. I'd be redoing that seat with Rebond foam for the first flavor followed by a nice soft layer of H/R and then a last layer of memory foam. I'll have to build and sell three street rods to purchase this thing. It's gonna be well worth it, that is if I actually pull it off. I gotta try this. 😁👍

So on the XE285, do you need to replace engine pistons and perform top/bottom end engine rebuilds with a certain ammount of hours, like on a two stroke dirtbike?
@simplywonderful449

Most aircraft have a guide to that - "mean time" to rebuilds, etc. This will be similar for the piston engines; the turbine will be quite different.

One does not build a copter with a piston engine. It can be done but the refinement of gas turbine and the degree of stress they operate under is so much better; A piston has a "pulse of torque" a gas turbine is smooth (called Brayton cycle) constant combustion which lends itself to the demand of aircraft with power to weight ratio and durability. No other internal combustion engine can match USNavy Gsm3 En3
@simplywonderful449
@simplywonderful449 3 года назад
Bill, sorry, but "one" builds copters with MANY different engines, pistol or turbine. Small helis often use piston engines because they're not as expensive and the increased power of a turbine just isn't needed. If you check out makers of two-seat machines you'll see that the majority of them ARE piston-powered.

I bet required maintenance for the turbine engine is much lower and less frequent than for the 2-stroke. How many hours between overhaul on the turbine?
@simplywonderful449
@simplywonderful449 3 года назад
Turbines are generally less maintenance, but also much lower vibration, smoother operation overall, and better performance per weight and fuel usage. It's why the turbine is the choice in large helicopters too. A jet package for a Bell LongRanger can be swapped out in a few hours by an A&P mechanic, they're available rebuilt already and smaller & lighter than a piston engine for the power provided.

If they just used a BLDC variable speed motor only for tail Rotor they could have increased efficiency of engine with further reduction in weight and besides it may also increase the tail rotor reliability. It also elements the need for Tail Rotor Pitch Variations .
@simplywonderful449
@simplywonderful449 3 года назад
You want to use another motor - an electric variable speed - to power the tail rotor? You're thinking of your electric R/C helicopters. This is the real thing. What do you think a battery/generator setup, plus the motor, would add to the complexity, reliability and cost of the machine? Now you know why engineers build helicopters. Your reliability would fall with an electric tail rotor.

@rogeronslow1498
@rogeronslow1498 5 лет назад
The labour rates in the US are very high compared to may other places in the world. If this machine was made outside the US it would be substantially cheaper.
@60viking
@60viking 4 года назад
So how much cheaper do you think.
@rogeronslow1498
@rogeronslow1498 4 года назад
@@60viking I think probably half the cost if the entire machine was made in China or India. And the billet CNC machining is also expensive. If the main and tailrotor gearbox housings were cast and machined another saving. The only problem with offshore manufacturing is the extensive quality control that needs to be implemented, and that's a huge problem for Asian manufacturers. Perhaps the best solution is a mixed approach by having many less critical parts manufactured offshore and the critical pieces locally.

Reliability and engine life. The extra HP is not needed anyway as speed is limited by the rotor (retreating blade stall). The only place it might be an advantage is at high altitudes, but at rated 85HP, still plenty of excess power.
