--------
Former MLB pitcher Dwight "Doc" Gooden opened up about the dichotomy of his experiences during the 1980s, including winning the World Series with the New York Mets in 1986 and his struggles with drug addiction. Despite signing a lucrative contract that made him a millionaire in 1986 and fulfilling dreams like providing for his family, Gooden's life began to spiral due to substance misuse. He revealed that he and teammate Darryl Strawberry started using cocaine together that year, highlighting the wild and troubled reputation of the Mets during that era.
The most poignant moment came when Gooden recounted missing the Mets' World Series victory parade. Instead of celebrating with his team, he was in a Long Island project, high on cocaine, a decision that haunted him deeply. Gooden admitted that this missed opportunity paralleled the grief of losing his mother, underscoring the profound regret and emotional turmoil his addiction caused. Now in a better place mentally, Gooden continues to grapple with his past, aiming to forgive himself as others have forgiven him.

In the summer of 1986 I was 11 years old and a little league baseball pitcher. This man was my hero. He had a 1.53 e.r.a. in 85. I kept his baseball card in the drawer of my nightstand. I wish I could go back to the days of Doc Gooden throwing them burners over home plate.

Both Strawberry and Gooden would be in the Hall of Fame if they hadn't been derailed by substances. Doc gave up only 47 earned runs in 277 innings in 1985 (1.53 ERA). One of the best seasons for a pitcher in baseball history.

You can just see that Dwight Gooden is a genuine human being. I just am more and more impressed every time I see this man talk over the last several months. He always talks about his father, always. That man must’ve had a big effect on Dwight. I’m so happy and proud for this guy; and I served him a Big Mac over 25 years ago on Long Island after he had a speaking engagement and came to the McDonald’s I worked at at 10pm.

Growing up in Brooklyn, my family loved this man. Him and Strawberry.

That’s a damn shame, why is it in the black community when one of the kids get rich suddenly it’s their responsibility to take care of the whole family? That’s a lot of pressure for young people and very irresponsible of the parents!

I remember being a kid following this man’s legacy. I suffered with him when he was going through this although I was only 8/9 years old I remember how everyone celebrated him and wanted to see him win well into the 90’s.

Respect to Doc for being candid and admitting he made the wrong choice getting high instead of being with his team at the parade. Unfortunately, many addicts tend to play the victim role and rarely hold themselves accountable for their actions.

That 86 team had so much talent they should’ve won more World Series but doc and straw wasn’t the only ones on that team that was wilding.
