Dwight continues to be a classic in his own time. A genius. He takes a 45 year old staple recorded by dang near everybody and makes it his own thing. Listening to him is like listening to it for the first time.
Bernie Bennett everything you say is true BUT you neglected the singer songwriter who WROTE THIS TUNE, the EXCELLENT Danny O’Keefe who did the BEST VERSION by far. Now, I feel better.
I don't care for country music. Never bought a C&W album. Then I had no choice but to escort my wife to a Brooks & Dunn concert & Dwight opened up for them. I was as impressed as when I saw Tina Turner. He knows how to entertain!
Just found this...I'm a die hard DY fan. Love everything he sings but...this he takes you there. And like many others he sings. That's what sets him apart from ALL others.
This acoustic version is so much better than his earlier recording. Sounds like he has learned more about life. He puts do much emotion into his singing. Great song, great voice, great video!
That hillbilly accent I hear it everyday right home in KY. He might have grown up in Ohio but his home that sound was flourishing. God bless him n his.
If anybody can pull off a good cover of this song, it's Dwight. The man rarely disapoints and this is no exception. In his own Bakersfield hillbilly moanin' way, he still manages to evoke the feel of the original, even with his ever so slight inflection changes. Its the mark of a true artist who take a pure melancholy song like this original by Danny O'Keefe, and make it his own. Dwight Yoakam is vastly under-rated in this regard.
I used to listen to this song when I was little. I always loved it. Its nice to hear it by Dwight. He just has that soulful voice that can do the song justice. Thanks for sharing.
I think this is one of those rare songs nobody could trash. Been done by the greats Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Leon Russel, and the one I grew up on Charlie Rich and I have yet to hear a bad version.
dwight is one of the few who never changed, never compromised who he was,to me, that makes him an ARTIST,Trashville,[and what it should be called nowadays,]is full of singers, but very, very few ARTIST,DWIGHT tried trashville but they didnt get it, so he went to LA and became a friggin LEGEND,I dont understand why, but that seems backwards to me,anyways that was in the 80s,but nothings changed, there aint much country music in the country music capital anymore, just my two cents worth.
Hard to beat the orig by Danny O'Keefe. Just something about the pureness in Danny's original. Always good to listen to different versions...thanx to RU-vid....
Yes Dwight. You do know how to sing the blues... "Some gotta win and some gotta lose..." I just lost and it is somewhat comforting to hear your voice and words...
@slinginguitarman I totaly agree with U, Nashville has lost it's countyspirit looong time ago.... Dwight is one of the few Country-artists that will be remembered forever! Thumbs up from Norway :o)
I concur Dolph Savage. Thanks, Dwight for being the go to thing in my life. I do so prefer the older stuff, talking about kin, sin, hope, and the appropriately intense dose of revenge. I'm still giving 3 pears a chance, but I've never had to work so hard to like your work.
I think he went back to Bakersfield & hooked up with Buck Owens, but none the less he is a true ARTIST as you stated. My favorite is "She Wore Red Dresses, & then "I Sang Dixie". I love all of his music.
It's a toss-up who does this better! Danny O'Keefe with the original, or Dwight with this fabulous rendition. What a great soulful job here, If I were Danny O'Keefe, I would be proud that Dwight Yoakam chose to cover my song...
Everybody's gone away, Said they're movin' to L.A. There's not a soul I know around, Everybody's leavin' town Some caught a freight, some caught a plane Find the sunshine leave the rain They said this town will waste your time Guess they're right -- it's wasting mine [Chorus:] Some gotta win, some gotta lose Good Time Charlie's got the blues Good Time Charlie's got the blues [Instrumental] Y'know my heart keeps tellin' me You're not a kid at 33 Y'play around y'lose your wife, Y'play too long, you lose your life Got my pills t'ease the pain, Can't find a thing to stop the rain I'd love t'try and settle down, But everybody's leavin' town [Chorus:] Some gotta win, some gotta lose Good Time Charlie's got the blues Good Time Charlie's got the blues Good Time Charlie's got the blues Got the blues, got the blues Got the blues, got the blues Good Time Charlie's got the blues Got the blues, got the blues
